Impacts from air pollution on respiratory disease outcomes: a meta-analysis

Introduction

Air pollution is widely acknowledged as a significant factor in respiratory outcomes, including coughing, wheezing, emergency department (ED) visits, and even death. Although several literature reviews have confirmed the association between air pollution and respiratory outcomes, they often did not standardize associations across different studies and overlooked other increasingly impactful pollutants such as trace metals. Recognizing the importance of consistent comparison and emissions of non-exhaust particles from road traffic, this study aims to comprehensively evaluate the standardized effects of various criteria pollutants and trace metals on respiratory health.

Methods

We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of peer-reviewed journal articles on air pollution and respiratory outcomes published between 1 January 2000, and 1 June 2024. The study included children (age < 18 years), adults (age ≥ 18 years), and all age groups exposed to criteria pollutants established by the US Environmental Protection Agency National Ambient Air Quality Standards and over 10 trace metals. Using databases, such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, and Google Scholar, we identified 579 relevant articles. After rigorous screening and quality assessment using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, 50 high-quality studies were included. We converted various reported outcomes (e.g., odds ratios, relative risk, and percent increase) to a standardized odds ratio (OR) for comparability and performed meta-analyses using R 4.4.0 and related packages, ensuring the robustness of our findings.

Results

Our meta-analysis indicated significant associations between air pollutants and respiratory outcomes. For particulate matter with diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), the overall ORs for children, adults, and combined age groups were 1.31, 1.10, and 1.26, respectively, indicating a consistent positive association. Similar positive associations were observed for particulate matter with diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM10) and other pollutants, with children showing higher susceptibility than adults. The analysis of trace metals also showed significant associations; however, these findings require cautious interpretation due to the small number of studies.

Conclusion

Our study supports associations between air pollutants, including non-exhaust trace metals, and respiratory outcomes across different age groups. The findings underscore the need for stringent environmental health policies and further research, especially in regions with higher pollution levels. The future studies should consider long-term and short-term exposures separately and include diverse populations to improve the accuracy and generalizability of the results.

Atmospheric transport is a major pathway of microplastics to remote regions

In recent years, marine, freshwater and terrestrial pollution with microplastics has been discussed extensively, whereas atmospheric microplastic transport has been largely overlooked. Here, we present global simulations of atmospheric transport of microplastic particles produced by road traffic (TWPs – tire wear particles and BWPs – brake wear particles), a major source that can be quantified relatively well. We find a high transport efficiencies of these particles to remote regions. About 34% of the emitted coarse TWPs and 30% of the emitted coarse BWPs (100 kt yr⁻¹ and 40 kt yr⁻¹ respectively) were deposited in the World Ocean. These amounts are of similar magnitude as the total estimated direct and riverine transport of TWPs and fibres to the ocean (64 kt yr⁻¹). We suggest that the Arctic may be a particularly sensitive receptor region, where the light-absorbing properties of TWPs and BWPs may also cause accelerated warming and melting of the cryosphere.

Plastic pollution is a critical concern across diverse ecosystems, yet most research has focused on terrestrial and aquatic transport, neglecting other mechanisms. Here the authors show that atmospheric transport is a major pathway for road plastic pollution over remote regions.

Evaluation of hydrogenated resin acids as molecular markers for tire-wear debris in urban environments

To propose new molecular markers for tire-wear emissions, four dihydroresin acids, that is, 8-isopimaren-18-oic acid (I), 8-pimaren-18-oic acid (II), 13β(H)-abieten-18-oic acid (III), and 13α(H)-abiet-8-en-18-oic acid (IV), were identified and investigated for source specificities, distributions, and environmental stabilities. The absence of I-IV in natural sources and the linear correlations between dihydroresin acids with different skeletons in tires and in environmental samples demonstrated that I-IV are specific markers for synthetic rubbers. The ratio of III + IV to the sum of III + IV plus abietic acid showed the resin acids distribution between different environmental compartments receiving contributions from traffic and natural sources. The physicochemical properties and results of photolysis experiments suggested that I-IV can set lower limits for tire-wear contributions to environmental loads of particulate matter (PM) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with molecular weight ≥202. By comparing III + IV concentrations or (III+IV)/pyrene or (III+IV)/benzo[a]pyrene ratios in tires and those in environmental matrices, the contributions of tire-wear emissions to PM, pyrene, and benzo[a]pyrene were estimated to be 0.68 ± 0.54%, 6.9 ± 4.8%, and 0.37 ± 0.18% in roadside PM and 0.83 ± 0.21%, 0.88 ± 0.52%, and 0.08 ± 0.06% in rooftop PM.

Occurrence and effects of tire wear particles in the environment--a critical review and an initial risk assessment

This review summarizes the existing knowledge on the occurrence of tire wear particles in the environment, and their ecotoxicological effects. A meta-analysis on tire components in the environment revealed that tire wear particles are present in all environmental compartments, including air, water, soils/sediments, and biota. The maximum Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PECs) of tire wear particles in surface waters range from 0.03 to 56 mg l(-1) and the maximum PECs in sediments range from 0.3 to 155 g kg(-1) d.w. The results from our previous long-term studies with Ceriodaphnia dubia and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were used to derive Predicted No Effect Concentrations (PNECs). The upper ranges for PEC/PNEC ratios in water and sediment were >1, meaning that tire wear particles present potential risks for aquatic organisms. We suggest that management should be directed towards development and production of more environmentally friendly tires and improved road runoff treatment.
