Potential factors contributing to observed sex differences in virtual-reality-induced sickness

Virtual reality (VR) technology has been widely adopted for several professional and recreational applications. Despite rapid innovation in hardware and software, one of the long prevailing issues for end users of VR is the experience of VR sickness. Females experience stronger VR sickness compared to males, and previous research has linked susceptibility to VR sickness to the menstrual cycle (Munafo et al., Exp Brain Res 235(3):889-901). Here we investigated the female versus male experience in VR sickness while playing an immersive VR game, comparing days of the menstrual cycle when hormones peak: day 15 (ovulation-peak estrogen) and day 22 (mid-luteal phase-peak progesterone). We found that immersion duration was greater in the second session than the first, and discomfort was lessened, suggesting a powerful adaptation with repeated exposure. Due to the estrogen levels changing along with the exposure, there was no clear independent impact of that; note, though, that there was a significant difference between self-report and physiological measures implying that GSR is potentially an unreliable measure of motion sickness. Although prior work found a delay over 2 days between session would not allow adaptation and habituation to reduce VR sickness susceptibility, we found that a week delay has potential success.

Measuring near-induced transient myopia in college students with visual discomfort

PURPOSE

Visual discomfort is a common problem, and our previous research indicated that 17% of college students experience moderate to high levels of discomfort when reading or studying. There have been several visual factors associated with visual discomfort, and in this study, we focused on measuring the near-induced transient myopia response in a group of college students with significant visual discomfort.

METHODS

Visual discomfort was evaluated with a survey developed by Conlon et al. (Conlon et al., Visual Cogn 1999;6:637-663). Twelve college students with high visual discomfort (scoring 1 SD higher than the mean value) and 12 college students with low visual discomfort (scoring within 0.5 SD of the mean value) participated in the study. All students had 20/25 or better visual acuity, no strabismus, and no significant uncorrected refractive error. All refractive error and accommodative measurements were made with the WAM-5500 autorefractor. A pretask distance refraction at 6 m was taken for 60 s, and then the students read a story for 10 min at 20 cm. After reading the passage, the posttask distance refraction was measured for 2 min at 6 m. Values for the pre- and posttask measures were averaged in 10-s blocks of time.

RESULTS

A mixed analysis of variance comparing discomfort group by pre- and postnear work distance refraction showed a significant interaction (p = 0.05). Comparing the means of the pre- and posttask distance refraction indicated that the high discomfort group showed no change in refractive error, but the low discomfort group showed a myopic shift of 0.13 diopter.

CONCLUSIONS

A near-induced transient myopia response is not associated with high visual discomfort experienced by college students when reading or doing near work.

Susceptibility to nausea and motion sickness as a function of the menstrual cycle

PURPOSE

The present study examined whether susceptibility to nausea and other symptoms of vection-induced motion sickness vary as a function of phase of the menstrual cycle, as research findings in this area are sparse and contradictory.

DESIGN

Ninety young women (42 current users of oral contraceptives) were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum during the peri-menses or peri-ovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle in an independent-groups, quasi-experimental design. Nausea and motion sickness symptoms were assessed using the Nausea Profile (NP) and the Subjective Symptoms of Motion Sickness (SSMS) questionnaire.

RESULTS

Among women not on oral contraceptives, reports of nausea and motion sickness by women in the peri-menses phase were more severe than reports by women in the peri-ovulatory phase. By contrast, among women taking oral contraceptives, reports of nausea and motion sickness did not differ by the same categorical phase of the menstrual cycle.

CONCLUSIONS

We speculate that fluctuating estrogen levels over the course of the menstrual cycle may influence the experience of or susceptibility to nausea and motion sickness during illusory self-motion and other nauseogenic contexts.
