Abstract
The prevalence of hypertension in Japan remains high, owing to the high salt content of the typical Japanese diet. Dairy-based foods may reduce blood pressure and hypertension risk. However, dairy consumption is low in Japan, and the relationships between dairy intake and blood pressure or the mechanisms by which dairy products affect blood pressure are not fully understood. This cross-sectional study was conducted as part of the Iwaki Health Promotion Project in Aomori, Japan. A total of 1071 participants were included from those who underwent annual medical checkups in June 2015. Adjusted multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze the relationships between dairy consumption and blood pressure or hypertension risk. Comprehensive blood biomarker measurements were also performed. Whole- and high-fat dairy consumption was found to have significant inverse associations with systolic blood pressure (SBP) for all participants (β = -0.0213, P = 0.044) and with SBP and systolic hypertension risk for non-users of antihypertensive medicines (β = -0.0306, P = 0.011; and OR = 0.9927, P = 0.016; respectively). Three blood biomarkers related to phosphorus metabolism (inorganic phosphorus, intact parathyroid hormone, and interleukin-6) were associated with both dairy consumption and SBP. Dairy consumption had a partial inverse association with SBP and hypertension risk in a Japanese population with high salt and low dairy consumption. Analysis of blood biomarkers suggested that phosphorus metabolism is involved in the associations between dairy consumption and blood pressure.

Abstract
The "Dairy Diary" is a user-friendly web-based dairy intake screener. The reliability and validity are unknown. We aimed to evaluate the screener in terms of test-retest reliability and comparative validity. In a diagnostic accuracy study, a purposefully recruited sample of 79 (age: 21.6 ± 3.8 years) undergraduate dietetics/nutrition students from three South African universities completed 3 non-consecutive days of weighed food records (reference standard) within a seven-day period (comparative validity), followed by two administrations, 2 weeks apart, of the screener (index test) (reliability). For the four dairy product serving scores (PSSs) and the summative dairy serving scores (DSSs) of the screener and the food records, t-tests, correlations, Bland-Altman, Kappa, McNemar's, and diagnostic accuracy were determined. For reliability, mean PSSs and DSSs did not differ significantly (p > .05) between the screener administrations. The mean PSSs were strongly correlated: milk (r = .69; p < .001), maas (fermented milk) (r = .72; p < .001), yoghurt (r = .71; p < .001), cheese (r = .74; p < .001). For DSSs, Kappa was moderate (k = 0.45; p < .001). Non-agreeing responses suggest symmetry (p = .334). For validity, the PSSs of the screener and food records were moderately correlated [milk (r = .30; p = .0129), yoghurt (r = .38; p < .001), cheese (r = .38; p < .001)], with k = 0.31 (p = .006) for DSS. Bland-Altman analyses showed acceptable agreement for DSSs (bias: -0.49; 95% CI: -0.7 to -0.3). Categorized DSSs had high sensitivity (81.4%) and positive predictive value (93.4%), yet low specificity (55.6%) and negative predictive value (27.8%). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.7) was acceptable. The "Dairy Diary" is test-retest reliable with moderate comparative validity to screen for dairy intake of nutrition-literate consumers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Dietary interventions can directly affect several ASCVD risk factors. This study aimed to assess an association between dairy consumption and the odds of ASCVD and its risk factors in women with overweight and obesity. METHODS The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 390 Iranian women aged 18-48 years and body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m². Dairy consumption was assessed using a 147-item food frequency questionnaire. Participants were divided into tertiles based on their dairy consumption with 130 (33.3%) women in each category. RESULTS The participants had an average age of 36.73 ± 9.18 years, and the mean BMI was 31.28 ± 4.30 kg/m2. In the unadjusted model, individuals in the third tertile of dairy consumption had 0.79 times lower odds of ASCVD compared to those in the first tertile (OR: 0.21; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.11, 0.41; P-value = 0.001). Additionally, we observed a significant inverse relationship between higher dairy intake and adiposity markers, blood pressure, and Triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI). CONCLUSION The study revealed a negative association between dairy intake and the risk of ASCVD but this association diminished after adjusting for confounding factors. It also found a negative association between dairy consumption with BMI, fat mass index, body fat, blood pressure, and TyG-BMI.

Abstract
The consumption of plant-based drinks (PBDs) in substitution for cow's milk (CM) is increasing due to concerns for human and planet health and animal welfare. The present review aims to analyze the main findings from intervention trials investigating the effect of PBDs in comparison with CM on markers of human health. Suitable articles published up to July 2022 were sourced from PubMed and Scopus databases. A total of 29 papers were collected, with 27 focusing on soy drinks (1 of which also evaluated the effects of an almond drink), while only 2 focused on rice drinks. Among studies focused on soy drinks, the most investigated factors were anthropometric parameters (n = 13), the lipid profile (n = 8), markers of inflammation and/or oxidative stress (n = 7), glucose and insulin responses (n = 6) and blood pressure (n = 4). Despite some evidence of a beneficial effect of PBDs, especially for the lipid profile, it was not possible to draw any overall conclusions due to some conflicting results. As well as the low number of studies, a wide heterogeneity was found in terms of the characteristics of subjects, duration and markers, which reduces the strength of the available results. In conclusion, further studies are needed to better elucidate the effects of substituting CM with PBDs, especially in the long term.

Abstract
Little is known about the longitudinal association between dietary patterns (DPs) and metabolic disorders in people living at high altitude areas, such as Tibetans. We constructed the first open cohort, with 1832 Tibetans, and collected data in 2018 and in 2022. The metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence was 30.1% (32.3% in men and 28.3% in women). Three different DPs were identified: modern DP (pulses, poultry, offal, and processed meat), urban DP (vegetables, refined grain, beef/mutton, and eggs), and pastoral DP (Tibetan cheese, tsamba, butter/milk tea, and desserts). Participants within the third tertile of the urban DP had a 3.42-fold (95% CI 1.65-7.10) higher risk of MetS than those with the first tertile. Modern DP was positively associated with elevated blood pressure (BP) and elevated triglycerides (TAG), while it was inversely associated with low HDL-C. The urban DP was associated with a higher risk of low HDL-C, but a lower risk of impaired fasting blood glucose (FBG). The pastoral DP was a risk factor for impaired FBG, but protective for central obesity and elevated BP. Associations of modern DP with elevated BP, and pastoral DP with low HDL-C, were modified by altitude. In conclusion, among Tibetan adults, DPs were associated with MetS and its components, and the associations were modified by altitude among Tibetans.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association between dairy intake and mortality remains uncertain, and evidence for the Japanese population is scarce. We aimed to investigate the association between dairy intake and all-cause, cancer, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in Japanese adults. METHODS A total of 34,161 participants (16,565 men and 17,596 women) aged 40-64 years without a history of cancer, myocardial infarction, or stroke at baseline were included in the analysis, using data from the Miyagi Cohort Study initiated in 1990. Milk, yogurt, and cheese intake were obtained using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Total dairy intake was calculated as the sum of milk, yogurt, and cheese intake and then categorized by quartile. The outcomes were all-cause, cancer, and CVD mortality. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality risks. RESULTS During 750,016 person-years of follow-up, the total number of deaths was 6498, including 2552 deaths due to cancer and 1693 deaths due to CVD. There was no association between total dairy intake and all-cause, cancer, and CVD mortality for both men and women. We also examined the associations between subgroup dairy products and mortality. For milk and yogurt intake, our results suggest null associations. However, cheese intake was modestly associated with lower all-cause mortality in women; compared with non-consumers, the multivariable HRs (95%CIs) were 0.89 (0.81-0.98) for 1-2 times/month, 0.88 (0.78-1.00) for 1-2 times/week, and 0.89 (0.74-1.07) for 3 times/week or almost daily (p trend = 0.016). CONCLUSION Dairy intake was not associated with mortality in Japanese adults, except for limited evidence showing a modest association between cheese intake and a lower all-cause mortality risk in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension is a major risk for cardiovascular disease. Several studies have connected dairy consumption with lower blood pressure (BP). However, these have not considered the Latin American population. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between consumption of full-fat or low fat/fat free dairy products and high blood pressure in Chilean adults. METHODS Cross-sectional study containing data from 3,807 adults between 20 and 98 years old from the National Health Survey (NHS) of Chile 2016-2017. Information on lifestyle, food frequency, and socio-demographics was collected using standardized questionnaires. Trained fieldworkers took anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. The frequency of consumption data included seven ad-hoc questions on habitual eating and frequency options, based on the Mediterranean diet (fish products, fruit and vegetable, and dairy products) and its protective effect on cardiovascular diseases. The selection of foods was supported by expert opinion. RESULTS Of the 3,807 adults, 37% were male and 63% were female. Sex, education level, frequency of dairy products and fish, smoking, and sport or physical activity had a direct relationship with consumption of dairy products (P < 0.05). Consumption of low fat/fat free dairy products was protectively associated with high blood pressure in the unadjusted model (OR: 0.76, CI 95% 0.64-0.91). However, after adjustment for confounding variables (education level modifies the effect 10.2%), this association was attenuated (OR: 0.88; CI 95% 0.71-1.08). CONCLUSION We found limited evidence that the type of dairy products consumed is associated with high blood pressure in the Chilean population.

Longitudinal association between physical activity and blood pressure, risk of hypertension among Chinese adults: China Health and Nutrition Survey 1991-2015. Eur J Clin Nutr 2021; 75:274-282. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the effects of physical activity (PA) in adults with or without prehypertension at baseline on systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and hypertension risk by gender. METHODS A total of 5986 men and 6525 women (≥18 years old) without hypertension-related disease at baseline who attended surveys from China Health and Nutrition Survey (1991-2015) at least twice were selected. In terms of the nested data structure, three-level random intercept growth model and three-level logistic regression were used to estimate the relationship between the PA and SBP/DBP or hypertension risk. RESULTS The incidence of hypertension increased from 10.86% in 1991 to 20.34% in 2015, and the median of PA dropped from 408 MET·h/week in 1991 to 104 MET·h/week in 2015. After adjusting confounders, PA in the third and fourth quartiles decreased SBP (by 0.98 and 0.96 mm Hg, p < 0.05) and DBP (by 0.30 and 0.38 mm Hg, p < 0.05), and it reduced the odds of hypertension by 12 and 15% (p < 0.05), compared with PA in the lowest quartile. For normotensive women in the third quartile of PA and prehypertensive women in the fourth quartile of PA, the risk of hypertension was reduced 15 and 22%, compared with women in the lowest quartile of PA. CONCLUSIONS Physical activity should be improved to the relatively high level to be effective in controlling blood pressure. Normotensive women had an association between physical activity and SBP, DBP, and the risk of hypertension.

Abstract
Nutrition plays a key role in blood pressure (BP) regulation. Here, we examine associations between nutrient intakes and BP in a large predominantly female population-based cohort. We assessed the correlation between 45 nutrients (from food frequency questionnaires) and systolic BP/diastolic BP (SBP/DBP) in 3889 individuals from TwinsUK not on hypertensive treatments and replicated in an independent subset of monozygotic twins discordant for nutrient intake (17-242 pairs). Results from both analyses were meta-analysed. For significant nutrients, we calculated heritability using structural equation modelling. We identified and replicated 15 nutrients associated with SBP, 9 also being associated with DBP, adjusting for covariates and multiple testing. 14 of those had a heritable component (h2: 27.1-57.6%). Strong associations with SBP were observed for riboflavin (Beta(SE) = -1.49(0.38), P = 1.00 × 10-4) and tryptophan (-0.31(0.01), P = 5 × 10-4), while with DBP for alcohol (0.05(0.07), P = 1.00 × 10-4) and lactose (-0.05(0.0), P = 1.3 × 10-3). Two multivariable nutrient scores, combining independently SBP/DBP-associated nutrients, explained 22% of the variance in SBP and 13.6% of the variance in DBP. Moreover, bivariate heritability analysis suggested that nutrients and BP share some genetic influences. We confirm current understanding and extend the panel of dietary nutrients implicated in BP regulation underscoring the value of nutrient focused dietary research in preventing and managing hypertension.

Abstract
Hypertension is the leading cause of preventable mortality worldwide, contributing to over 9 million deaths per annum, predominantly owing to cardiovascular disease. The association of obesity, physical inactivity and alcohol with elevated blood pressure (BP) is firmly established. Weight loss or other dietary strategies, such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, have been shown to be effective in lowering BP. Additionally, specific nutrients are recognised to contribute to BP, with higher sodium intake linked with an increased risk of hypertension, while potassium is associated with a reduced risk of hypertension. Of note, emerging evidence has identified a novel role for one-carbon metabolism and the related B vitamins, particularly riboflavin, in BP. Specifically in adults genetically at risk of developing hypertension, owing to the common C677T polymorphism in MTHFR, supplemental riboflavin (co-factor for MTHFR) was shown in randomised trials to lower systolic BP by up to 13 mmHg. A BP response to intervention of this magnitude could have important clinical impacts, given that a reduction in systolic BP of 10 mmHg is estimated to decrease stroke risk by 40%. This review aims to explore the factors contributing to hypertension across the lifecycle and to critically evaluate the evidence supporting a role for nutrition, particularly folate-related B vitamins, in BP and risk of hypertension. In addition, gaps in our current knowledge that warrant future research in this area, will be identified.

Abstract
Objectives The lactase persistence/nonpersistence (LP/LNP) phenotypes follow a geographic pattern that is rooted in the gene-culture coevolution observed throughout the history of human migrations. The immense size and relatively open immigration policy have drawn migrants of diverse ethnicities to Canada. Among the multicultural demographic, two-thirds of the population are derived from the British Isles and northwestern France. A recent assessment of worldwide lactase distributions found Canada to have an LNP rate of 59% (confidence interval [CI] 44%-74%). This estimate is rather high compared with earlier reports that listed Canada as a country with a 10% LNP rate; the authors had also noted that biases were likely because their calculations were based largely on Aboriginal studies. We hereby present an alternate LNP prevalence estimate at the national, provincial and territorial level. Methods We applied the referenced LNP frequency distribution data to the 2016 population census to account for the current multi-ethnic distributions in Canada. Prevalence rates for Canada, the provinces and territories were calculated. Results The national LNP rate is estimated at 44% (CI 41%-47%) after accounting for the 254 ethnic groups, with the lowest rates found in the eastern provinces and the highest rates in the Northwest Territories (57%) and Nunavut (66%), respectively. Conclusion Despite the heterogeneous nature of the referenced data and the inference measures taken, evidently, the validity of our LNP estimate is anchored on the inclusion of multi-ethnic groups representing the current Canadian demographic.
