Abstract
BACKGROUND In sports, hip flexibility is essential to reduce injuries and improve performance. AIM This study aimed to examine the effects of auricular acupressure on hip flexibility and pain in Taekwondo participants. METHOD This randomized controlled trial was performed in the Republic of Korea from January 2021 to August 2021. The Numeric Rating Scale for Pain and Hip Flexibility was used. Twenty-one participants received auricular pressure once weekly for six weeks, while 17 participants did not receive any intervention. Auricular acupressure was applied to the hip (AH13), Shinmun, and auricular acupressure points associated with the pain areas reported by the participants. RESULTS Auricular acupressure improved hip flexibility (t = 2.67, p = .011) and back pain (t = 2.11, p = .043). The mean difference in post-pretest hip flexibility in the experimental group was 16.24 degrees (±13.63), whereas that in the control group was 4.77 degrees (±15.07). The mean difference in the experimental group's pre-post-test scores of back pain was 1.24 (±2.64), whereas that in the control group was 0.18 (±1.41). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study showed that auricular acupressure could be used to treat pain and improve hip flexibility.

Abstract
Background Smoking cessation is recommended as a key intervention for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) smokers. However, in China, few COPD smokers quit successfully. The aim of this study was to explore in depth the barriers and facilitators for smoking cessation among smokers with COPD in China. Methods A purposive sample of 32 hospitalized smokers with COPD were included, 17 ex-smokers and 15 current smokers, participated in the semi-structured interviews. Interviews were analyzed thematically and using a deductive approach guided by Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) framework. Results Three inter-related themes were generated: smokers’ motivation was a prerequisite for quitting, maintaining capability to quit smoking, and opportunities that facilitated smokers to quit. Motivation to quit for most participants was activated by COPD-related symptoms, although they had a limited knowledge of COPD. Physical benefits from quitting and strong willpower were facilitators for maintaining quitting, while exposure to smoking environment and strong addiction to nicotine were frequent reasons for relapse. Most ex-smokers quit smoking by their own willpower rather than professionally delivered smoking cessation interventions. Smokers’ attitudes toward these interventions depended on their effectiveness and convenience. Very few participants had experienced pharmacotherapy or behavioral support from physicians. However, interviewees preferred auricular acupressure to pharmacotherapy. Conclusion Motivation to quit among smokers with COPD was usually initiated by COPD-related symptoms. Physical benefits observed by quitting and strong willpower facilitated smoking cessation, while exposure to smoking environment and strong addiction to nicotine led to relapse. COPD smokers in China preferred auricular acupressure to pharmacotherapy.

Lee EJ. Effects of auriculotherapy on addiction: a systematic review. J Addict Dis 2022; 40:415-427. [PMID: 35179436 DOI: 10.1080/10550887.2021.2016011] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 10/19/2022]
Abstract
Auriculotherapy has been used to reduce withdrawal symptoms during drug detoxication. The purpose of this study was to review the results of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examined the impact of auriculotherapy on addiction. This study aimed to find an effective protocol involving auricular acupuncture points, intervention duration and frequency, and stimulating methods. We searched PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Medline for articles published between January 1, 1994, and March 31, 2021. The keywords used were auricular, acupuncture, addiction, substance misuse, smoking, randomized controlled trial, clinical trial, and human. Each RCT was evaluated for quality applying the risk of bias tool by the Cochrane group. Effect size (Hedges's g) was calculated using the mean values and standard deviation of the experimental and control groups. The risk for bias of these studies was moderate to high and only four studies (11.1%) earned scores of 6, indicating the lowest risk of bias and highest quality RCT. Out of 36 studies, 23 (64%) reported that auriculotherapy was effective for treating addiction such as opioids, cocaine, alcohol, heroin, nicotine, and gambling. The most commonly used combination of acupuncture points (four of 36 studies) was shenmen, sympathetic, liver, lung, and kidney, which are called NADA protocol. The following most frequently used combination of acupressure points (four out of 36 studies) was shenmen, subcortex, heart, lung, and liver. Acupressure could be considered to be used for the treatment of addiction.

Comparison between Acupuncture and Nicotine Replacement Therapies for Smoking Cessation Based on Randomized Controlled Trials: A Systematic Review and Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis. EVIDENCE-BASED COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE 2021; 2021:9997516. [PMID: 34221095 PMCID: PMC8225439 DOI: 10.1155/2021/9997516] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/13/2021] [Accepted: 05/03/2021] [Indexed: 01/21/2023]
Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the efficacy and/or safety of acupuncture therapy (AT) in quitting smoking. Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM). We used Cochrane Collaborative Quality Assessment to assess the risk of bias. Bayesian network meta-analysis was utilized to evaluate the efficacy and safety of different interventions. Data analyses were conducted using WinBUGS 1.4.3, Stata 14, and RevMan 5.3.5 software. Results A total of 2706 patients from 23 studies were included, involving 6 treatment arms. Network meta-analysis demonstrated that there was no significant difference in short-term abstinence rates or changes in Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence (FTND) scores and daily smoking among these groups (AT, sham acupuncture therapy (SAT), auricular acupressure (AA), sham auricular acupressure (SAA), acupuncture plus auricular acupressure (APAA), and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)). However, there was a significant difference between SAA and AA with risk ratio (RR) of 2.49 (95% CI 1.14, 5.97) in long-term abstinence rate. The probabilistic ranking results showed that APAA and AA were superior to other interventions in the comparison of abstinence rates. There was no obvious inconsistency between the direct comparison and indirect comparison, using the consistency test. Conclusion AA was superior to SAA in smoke quitting, but there was no difference among other interventions in long-term truncation rates. There was no difference in short-term abstinence rates among these selected groups. We need large sample RCTs to clarify the advantages of interventions such as APAA and AA. In addition, reporting of adverse events that may occur during treatment also should be enhanced to complement evidence-based medicine. The trial is registered with PROSPERO CRD42020164712.

Abstract

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the differences and correlations among pain, depressive symptoms, and constipation in smokers and non smokers. DESIGN AND METHODS The present study was a cross-sectional study that used descriptive correlations. This study was a secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial. FINDINGS Smokers had more pain, depressive symptoms, and constipation than non smokers. Smokers had similar serotonin levels compared with non smokers. Positive correlations were observed between constipation and serum serotonin levels (r = .19, P = .039, n = 116), between constipation and depressive symptoms (r = .18, P = .023, n = 164), and between constipation and pain (r = .23, P = .004, n = 164) in smokers. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Health professionals should assess and treat patients with the knowledge that the severity of pain, depression, and constipation may be greater in smokers than in non smokers.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify factors predicting 6-month smoking cessation in Korean adult smokers. This descriptive correlation study assessed levels of urine cotinine, serum cotinine, serum serotonin, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid; tobacco withdrawal symptoms; and resilience among 164 Korean adult smokers. Serum cotinine levels were negatively related to resilience at six months (r = -.42, p = .019), but were positively related to the amount of smoking (r = .32, p = .008) and with the Week 6 tobacco withdrawal symptoms score (r = .48, p = .001, n = 41). Higher resilience was associated with a higher 5-HIAA concentration. Greater therapy attendance, resilience, and withdrawal symptoms explained 35.3% of the variance in 6-month smoking cessation (Nagelkerke R2 = .35, p < .001, n = 76). Efforts to increase counseling attendance rates and resilience and decrease withdrawal symptoms could be useful ways to improve smoking cessation rates.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between auricular tenderness and subjective symptoms. A descriptive correlational study design was followed, which was also the second analysis of a randomized controlled trial. This study was performed in the Republic of Korea from September 2013 to February 2017. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Constipation Assessment Scale, and the Nicotine Dependence Syndrome Scale were used. One hundred thirty-three participants displayed ear tenderness, whereas 84 participants did not. Adults with auricular tenderness reported more symptoms, such as sputum, rhinitis, constipation, stress, mood swings, and depressive symptoms compared with adults without (with tenderness: 4.14 ± 2.94, without tenderness: 2.92 ± 2.45; t = 3.32, P = .001). Finally, auricular acupressure points were positively correlated with various symptoms such as sputum, constipation, nicotine addiction, stress, cough, and rhinitis. Auricular palpation could be used to detect a disease at an early stage.
