Practical implications for providing physical activity counseling for the older adult: An integrative review

User characteristics associated with use of wrist-worn wearables and physical activity apps by adults with and without impaired speech-in-noise recognition: a cross-sectional analysis

OBJECTIVE

To study weekly use of smartwatches, fitness watches and physical activity apps among adults with and without impaired speech-in-noise (SIN) recognition, to identify subgroups of users.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

STUDY SAMPLE

Adults (aged 28-80 years) with impaired (n = 384) and normal SIN recognition (n = 341) as measured with a web-based digits-in-noise test, from the Netherlands Longitudinal Study on Hearing. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to study differences and to build an association model.

RESULTS

Employed adults in both groups are more likely to use each type of fitness technology (all ORs >3.4, all p-values < 0.004). Specific to fitness watch use, adults living with others use it more (OR 2.5, 95%CI 1.1;5.8, p = 0.033) whereas those abstaining from alcohol (OR 0.3, 95%CI 0.1;0.6) or consuming >2 glasses/week (OR 0.4, 95%CI 0.2;0.81, overall p = 0.006) and hearing aid users (OR 0.5, 95%CI 0.2;0.9, p = 0.024) make less use.

CONCLUSIONS

Subgroups of adults more and less likely to use fitness technology exist, but do not differ between adults with and without impaired SIN recognition. More research is needed to confirm these results and to develop interventions to increase physical activity levels among adults with hearing loss.

Effects of pre-surgical aerobic dance-based exercise on lower extremity in people with morbid obesity awaiting bariatric surgery: Randomized controlled study

To investigate what are the effects of pre-surgical aerobic dance-based exercise programme (PSADBE) and physical activity counselling (PAC) programme on lower extremity functions after surgery in people with morbid obesity awaiting bariatric surgery (PMOABS). This study was a single-blind, randomized controlled study. Groups were divided into Group I (PSADBE and PAC) and Group II (PAC). Both groups received PAC, Group I completed the PSADBE programme accompanied by music for 60 min/2 days/8 weeks. Thirty-four PMOABS were included in the study. The 6-Minute Walking Test, as primary outcomes, and The Stair Climbing Up-Down Test for evaluating functional capacity, Biodex Isokinetic Test and Exercise System® for evaluating muscle strength were used. Besides, muscle endurance, physical activity (PA) level, fatigue and quality of life (QoL) were also assessed. All measurements were repeated three times; pre-treatment, post-treatment and the fifth-month post-surgery. After 8 weeks, significant changes were found in functional capacity, muscle strength and endurance, PA level, fatigue and QoL in both groups (p < .05). Comparing the groups, the changes in functional capacity, muscle strength and endurance, PA and fatigue scores after treatment and the fifth-month post-surgery were statistically superior in Group I (p < .05). Adding an 8-week PSADBE programme to PAC is an effective treatment option for improving postoperative functional capacity, muscle strength and endurance, PA level and fatigue in PMOABS.

Older Adult Use and Outcomes in a Digital Musculoskeletal (MSK) Program, by Generation

Objective: We investigated use and clinical outcomes in a digital musculoskeletal (MSK) program, by generation.

Method: This longitudinal study uses retrospective data collected online or by app. The study included adults with 12 or more weeks of pain who took part in a digital MSK program. We compared Gen Z and Millennials, Gen X, working age Baby Boomers, and retiree age Baby Boomer and Silent Generation. Program use outcomes were program start, program completion, and number of exercises, educational articles, and messages to coaches. Clinical outcomes were changes in pain, depression, and anxiety from baseline to 12 weeks. We calculated descriptive statistics and conducted adjusted regression models.

Results: Odds of starting the program were significantly higher for Gen Xers (OR: 1.12) and working age Baby Boomers (OR: 1.37) vs. Gen Zers and Millennials. Compared to Gen Zers and Millennials, we observed significantly higher odds of program completion among Gen Xers (OR: 1.62), working age Baby Boomers (OR: 2.24), and retirees (OR: 2.36). Compared to Gen Zers and Millennials, retirees had 19 more exercise sessions (IRR: 1.69), accessed 11 more articles (IRR: 1.84), and sent 4 more messages to coaches (IRR: 1.26). Compared to Gen Z and Millennials, we observed no significant differences in change in pain for Gen Xers, working age Baby Boomers, or retirees.

Conclusions: Adults from multiple generations took part in a digital MSK program. Findings suggest that older generations used a digital MSK program more than younger generations, but had similar pain outcomes.
