Abstract
Vascular dementia (VaD) significantly impairs patients' quality of life and imposes a major social and economic burden. Electroacupuncture (EA), a contemporary modification of traditional acupuncture, has demonstrated potential in improving cognitive function in VaD, particularly when applied at the Shenting and Baihui. However, the underlying mechanisms remain inadequately understood. Elucidating how EA ameliorates cognitive deficits is critical for validating its clinical application and advancing non-pharmacological interventions for neurodegenerative disorders. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective mechanisms of electroacupuncture at these acupoints on cognitive function in VaD rats. VaD was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats through bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCAO), with sham rats serving as controls. Rats were subsequently divided into three groups: BCAO, BCAO + EA and BCAO + EA + YC-1 (a HIF-1α inhibitor). Electroacupuncture was applied to the Shenting and Baihui. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured using dynamic susceptibility contrast functional MRI, and cognitive recovery was evaluated through the Morris water maze. Immunohistochemical analysis quantified myelin repair and angiogenesis, while expression of HIF-1α, VEGF and VEGFR2 in white matter was quantified using PCR and Western blot. The results indicated that electroacupuncture improved learning and memory, increased CBF, enhanced myelin recovery and promoted angiogenesis in VaD rats. The expression of HIF-1α, VEGF and VEGFR2 in the white matter was significantly elevated in VaD rats. Electroacupuncture at Shenting and Baihui activates the HIF-1α/VEGF/VEGFR2 pathway, enhances angiogenesis, white matter perfusion and myelin repair, thereby restoring cognitive function in VaD rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with dementia (PwD) and their carers often consider maintaining good quality of life (QoL) more important than improvements in cognition or other symptoms of dementia. There is a clinical need for identifying interventions that can improve QoL of PwD. There are currently no evidence-based guidelines to help clinicians, patients and policy makers to make informed decisions regarding QoL in dementia. AIMS To conduct the first comprehensive systematic review of all studies that investigated efficacy of any pharmacological or non-pharmacological intervention for improving QoL of PwD. METHOD Our review team identified eligible studies by comprehensively searching nine databases. We completed quality assessment, extracted relevant data and performed GRADE assessment of eligible studies. We conducted meta-analyses when three or more studies investigated an intervention for improving QoL of PwD. RESULTS We screened 14 389 abstracts and included 324 eligible studies. Our meta-analysis confirmed level 1 evidence supporting the use of group cognitive stimulation therapy for improving QoL (standardised mean difference 0.25; P = 0.003) of PwD. Our narrative data synthesis revealed level 2 evidence supporting 42 non-pharmacological interventions, including those based on cognitive rehabilitation, reminiscence, occupational therapy, robots, exercise or music therapy. Current evidence supporting the use of any pharmacological intervention for improving QoL in dementia is limited. CONCLUSIONS Current evidence highlights the importance of non-pharmacological interventions and multidisciplinary care for supporting QoL of PwD. QoL should be prioritised when agreeing care plans. Further research focusing on QoL outcomes and investigating combined pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions is urgently needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This scoping review aimed to determine the current research status of acupuncture for major psychiatric disorder (MPD) in earthquake survivors. METHOD We followed the scoping review process described previously. A literature search on 14 electronic databases was conducted from inception to November 29, 2022. Data from the included studies were collected and descriptively analyzed to address our research question. Extracted data were collated, synthesized, and summarized the according to the analytical framework of a scoping review. RESULT This scoping review included nine clinical studies: four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and five before-after studies. The most frequent MPD type among the included acupuncture studies was posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; 6/9, 66.67%). The most frequent acupuncture type was scalp electro-acupuncture (4/9, 44.44%), followed by manual acupuncture and ear acupressure/ear acupuncture (3/9, 33.33%). Studies using scalp electro-acupuncture all used common acupoints, including GB20, GV20, GV24, and EX-HN1. In general, the treatment period lasted between 4 and 12 weeks. Validated assessment tools for PTSD severity and accompanying symptoms were used for patients with PTSD, while the corresponding evaluation tools were used for patients with other diagnoses or clinical symptoms. Acupuncture-related adverse events were generally mild and temporary, such as mild bleeding and hematoma, and syncope was a rare but potentially serious adverse event (1/48 patients and 1/864 sessions over a treatment period of 4 weeks). CONCLUSION Acupuncture studies for MPD after an earthquake mainly focused on PTSD. RCTs accounted for around half of the included studies. Scalp electro-acupuncture was the most common acupuncture type, and EX-HN1 and GV24 were the most important acupoints in the acupuncture procedures for MPD. The included studies mostly used validated symptom assessment tools, though some did not. Clinical studies in this field need to be further expanded regardless of the study type. Abstract
Memantine is a noncompetitive moderate-affinity strong voltage-dependent N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist. It has been used to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD) since 1989. In 2018, it became the second most commonly used drug for the treatment of dementia in the world. AD is nonreversible, and memantine can only relieve the symptoms of AD but not cure it. Over the past half-century, memantine's research and clinical application have been extensively developed. In this review, the basic composition of memantine, the mechanism and limitations of memantine in the treatment of AD, memantine combination therapy, comparison of memantine with other drugs for AD, and clinical studies of memantine in other diseases are reviewed to provide a valuable reference for further research and application of memantine for the treatment of AD.

Abstract
Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic and irreversible neurodegenerative disease. Oxidative stress emerges at the early AD stage. As a non-invasive therapy with few adverse reactions, transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) combines acupuncture points of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and electrical stimulation. This study aimed to investigate the amelioration effects of preventive TEAS treatment (P-TEAS) on cognitive impairment and oxidative stress in AD model rats. Methods The AD model was established via subcutaneous injections of D-galactose (D-gal, 120 mg/kg/d) into the back of neck for 9 weeks in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats to simulate the oxidative stress in the early AD stage. On the first day of the 10th week, Aβ1-42 (1 μg/μl) was injected into the CA1 regions of the bilateral hippocampus. P-TEAS was synchronized from the first day of subcutaneous D-gal injections for 9 weeks. Results Empirical measurements showed that P-TEAS can improve the spatial memory ability of AD model rats in the Morris water maze. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) was upregulated in the P-TEAS group. Through the detection of the anti-oxidative stress signaling pathway, namely, Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)/ NFE2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), it was found that P-TEAS could promote Nrf2 entering into the nucleus and upregulating the production of protective factors heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and NADPH quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1). It was also found that P-TEAS could downregulate the expressions of BCL2-associated X-protein (Bax), caspase 3, and caspase 9 to inhibit neuronal apoptosis. Conclusions P-TEAS has similar efficacy to electroacupuncture in preventing AD occurrence and development. P-TEAS is a new non-invasive intervention therapy for the prevention of AD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Inflammation has long been considered a key factor in learning and memory impairment in patients with vascular dementia (VaD). Studies have confirmed that electroacupuncture can improve the learning and memory impairment of patients with VaD by reducing inflammation, but the specific mechanism of this effect is still unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the underlying mechanism of electroacupuncture in the treatment of VaD. METHODS The vascular dementia animal model was established by bilateral occlusion of common carotid arteries, and electroacupuncture treatment was given at Baihui (DU20) and Zusanli (ST36). The morris water maze (MWM) was used to test the spatial learning and memory ability of rats in each group. To evaluate the expression of Sirtuin1 (Sirt1), Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and inflammatory cytokine (IL-17) in the hippocampus and amygdala, immunohistochemistry and western blot were performed. RESULTS The MWM test and Nissl staining results show that electroacupuncture can significantly improve the learning and memory impairment of VaD rats, and can repair damaged neurons. Immunohistochemistry and western blot results showed that electroacupuncture could enhance the expression of sirt1 in VaD rats, on the contrary, the expression of STAT3 and IL-17 was reduced due to electroacupuncture. CONCLUSIONS The result suggests that electroacupuncture can suppress inflammation through the Sirt1/STAT3 pathway and improve spatial learning and memory in VaD rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Intellectual Quotients (IQ) is the ability to act purposefully, think rationally, and deal effectively with the environment. Emotional Quotients (EQ) includes empathy, expressing and understanding, feeling, controlling anger, independence, adaptability, liking, interpersonal problem-solving ability, perseverance, solidarity, friendliness, and respect; important for a person's success. Acupuncture therapy with Zhu Scalp and body acupuncture methods can be used to increase IQ and EQ in children.
AIM: This study was to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy with Zhu Scalp acupuncture and body acupuncture methods on the IQ and EQ of pre-school children.
METHODS: The research method is a quantitative pre and post-test design with cross-sectional control with a paired T-test. The research sample was pre-school children in Sukoharjo district with a total of 54 respondents. The data collection instrument is a questionnaire for respondent characteristics, IQ test, and EQ measurement using VSMS (Vineland Social Maturity Scale).
RESULTS: The research results showed chitosan 5%; a combination of chitosan 9% and snail seromucous 50% (ratio 1: 1) is a microbicide against MTB TB patient isolates. Snail seromucous was ineffective as a microbicide against MTB tuberculosis patients.
The results showed that there was a significant difference in the IQ and EQ levels of children before and after acupuncture therapy using the Zhu Scalp method and body acupuncture with a p-value of 0.000. The results of the N Gain test showed that there are differences in the effectiveness of the Zhu Scalp acupuncture and the body acupuncture method on increasing IQ and EQ in pre-school children.
CONCLUSION: The Zhu Scalp acupuncture method is more effective than the body acupuncture method to increase IQ and EQ of pre-school age children, which can be applied in the management of acupuncture therapy to improve child development.
