Current Insights into Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Clinical Strategies for Prevention and Treatment

BACKGROUND

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition that is caused by medial nerve compression, resulting in symptoms such as numbness, tightness, or weakness in the hand.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the study was to find out the genetic modulation, mechanism, available treatment, and recommendation for carpal tunnel syndrome at its specific stage.

METHODS

Almost 200 papers were searched for this review article, and 145 articles were selected. The literature was collected from different sources like Google scholar, PubMed, a directory of open-access journals, and science.gov by using keywords, such as treatment, risk factors, recommendation, and clinical features of carpal tunnel syndrome.

RESULTS

The most efficient non-surgical treatment is methylprednisolone acetate, which reduces inflammation by acting on the glucocorticoid receptor in conjunction with immunofilling. It has also been used successfully as a second-line drug for the treatment of patients with mild or moderate conditions in order to provide relief. New non-pharmacological options include laser therapy in acupuncture, transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS), and sham therapy. Modern treatments like TENS, laser therapy, splints, and injections of methylprednisolone acetate have been demonstrated to be helpful in sporadic situations. For patients with mild and moderate problems, more research should be conducted that includes the combination of these surgical and non-surgical treatments.

CONCLUSION

We propose a multifunctional panel construct and define standard data items for future research into carpal tunnel syndrome. A discussion on idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome, risk factors, combination of therapies, using guidelines-based recommendations and treatment should be initiated.

Influential articles on shoulder arthroplasty: bibliometric analysis and visualized study

BACKGROUND

Shoulder arthroplasty has had increasing global demand, technical development, and research interest in the past few decades, with the publication of numerous articles. However, little is known about the characteristics and evaluation of these articles. Our objective was to study and analyze the top 100 cited articles in shoulder arthroplasty research.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Publications on shoulder arthroplasty from inception to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science. The top 100 publications were defined by the number of citations, and their characteristics were recorded and analyzed. A visualized study of the articles was performed using VOSviewer software.

RESULTS

The top 100 cited articles were published between 1981 and 2018, with the 2000s the most productive decade. Citations per article ranged from 103 to 822. The countries with the most articles were the United States followed by France and Switzerland. Most of the articles were level III evidence. The keywords for the articles were primarily in 5 clusters: infection, fracture, osteoarthritis, perioperative complications, and prosthetic design.

CONCLUSIONS

The characteristics of influential articles on shoulder arthroplasty were thoroughly analyzed. Most studies focused on surgical techniques and perioperative complications with a relatively low level of evidence.

Using the alluvial plot to visualize the network characteristics of 100 top-cited articles on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) since 2011: Bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuro developmental disorder that affects children and adolescents. It is estimated that the prevalence of ADHD is 7.2% throughout the world. There have been a number of articles published in the literature related to ADHD. However, it remains unclear which countries, journals, subject categories, and articles have the greatest influence. The purpose of this study was to display influential entities in 100 top-cited ADHD-related articles (T100ADHD) on an alluvial plot and apply alluvial to better understand the network characteristics of T100ADHD across entities.

METHODS

Using the PubMed and Web of Science (WoS) databases, T100ADHD data since 2011 were downloaded. The dominant entities were compared using alluvial plots based on citation analysis. Based on medical subject headings (MeSH terms) and research areas extracted from PubMed and WoS, social network analysis (SNA) was performed to classify subject categories. To examine the difference in article citations among subject categories and the predictive power of MeSH terms on article citations in T100ADHD, one-way analysis of variance and regression analysis were used.

RESULTS

The top 3 countries (the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands) accounted for 75% of T100ADHD. The most citations per article were earned by Brazil (=415.33). The overall impact factor (IF = citations per 100) of the T100ADHD series is 188.24. The most cited article was written by Polanczyk et al from Brazil, with 772 citations since 2014. The majority of the articles were published and cited in Biol Psychiatry (13%; IF = 174.15). The SNA was used to categorize 6 subject areas. On the alluvial plots, T100ADHD's network characteristics were successfully displayed. There was no difference in article citations among subject categories (F = 1.19, P = .320). The most frequently occurring MeSH terms were physiopathology, diagnosis, and epidemiology. A significant correlation was observed between MeSH terms and the number of article citations (F = 25.36; P < .001).

CONCLUSION

Drawing the alluvial plot to display network characteristics in T100ADHD was a breakthrough. Article subject categories can be classified using MeSH terms to predict T100ADHD citations. Bibliometric analyses of 100 top-cited articles can be conducted in the future.

The Top 50 Most Cited Articles on Special Olympics: A Bibliometric Analysis

The Special Olympics was established in 1968 to "provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities". It has gained recognition in the field of sports and healthcare of persons with intellectual disability, with a large number of dedicated researchers and institutions all over the world. However, there is an urgent need to analyze the progress and current status of this research field to identify knowledge gaps and develop this discipline. The aim of this study was to analyze the scientific production of the Special Olympics and report the bibliometric characteristics of the top 50 most cited Special Olympics publications. A systematic search was conducted on the Scopus database and bibliometric data were extracted and analyzed. The top 50 publications received 1632 citations. A total of 138 authors (63 female and 75 male) contributed to these publications. The two main areas of study were the physical health of Special Olympics athletes (n = 27) and the psycho-social health of athletes (n = 12).

Analysis of altmetrics and additional metrics of the 50 most-cited Behçet articles of all time: A Web of Science-based study

Objective: The number of citations is used for the scholarly impact of a published article, but it does not always correlate with higher-quality research. Behçet's disease (BD) is a debilitating-blinding disorder with a significant volume of published articles in literature. Our aim was to investigate the references of the 50 most-cited Behçet articles and to evaluate the relationship between altmetric attention score (AAS) and additional metrics. Methods: The Web of Science (WoS) core collection was used to search for the 50 most-cited Behçet articles. Additional metrics and AAS of the reviewed articles and the journals in which the articles were published, were evaluated. Results: A total of 11.372 published articles on BD, between 1975 and 2022, were found. The citation range of 50 highly-cited articles was between 172 and 1322. The "top 50 list" articles were published between 1988 and 2018, and the average age of the article since publication was 18.86 ± 6.08 years. Rheumatology journals were the most published category with 21 articles. There was a weak-to-moderate correlation between AAS and additional metrics. Conclusions: This is the first analysis regarding the AAS of the 50 most-cited articles on BD, which provides useful information about the social impact and characteristics in the academic community. AAS correlates weakly with citation-based quality indexes, and moderately with immediacy index, which evaluates speed. The publication year should be considered when comparing or evaluating the AAS of articles. AAS could be evaluated in a secondary plan for scientific impact analysis.
