Neuromodulation and meditation: A review and synthesis toward promoting well-being and understanding consciousness and brain

The neuroscience of meditation is providing insight into meditation's beneficial effects on well-being and informing understanding of consciousness. However, further research is needed to explicate mechanisms linking brain activity and meditation. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) presents a promising approach for causally investigating neural mechanisms of meditation. Prior NIBS-meditation research has predominantly targeted frontal and parietal cortices suggesting that it might be possible to boost the behavioral and neural effects of meditation with NIBS. Moreover, NIBS has revealed distinct neural signatures in long-term meditators. Nonetheless, methodological variations in NIBS-meditation research contributes to challenges for definitive interpretation of previous results. Future NIBS studies should further investigate core substrates of meditation, including specific brain networks and oscillations, and causal neural mechanisms of advanced meditation. Overall, NIBS-meditation research holds promise for enhancing meditation-based interventions in support of well-being and resilience in both non-clinical and clinical populations, and for uncovering the brain-mind mechanisms of meditation and consciousness.

[Transdisciplinary treatment of functional movement disorders: integration instead of dissociation]

Successful treatment of patients with functional motor disorders is integrative in several ways: the primary treatment goal is the (re)integration of sensorimotor, cognitive and social functioning. The prerequisites for this are an integrated biopsychosocial model of everyone involved as well as close transdisciplinary cooperation. Instead of a simple addition of treatment components, all care providers and patients act in concert.

Stimulated brains and meditative minds: A systematic review on combining low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation and meditation in humans

Background

Low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) and meditation are two promising, yet variable, non-pharmacological interventions. Growing research is investigating combined effects of both techniques on one's cognitive, emotional, and physical health.

Objective

This article reviews the current research that combines tES and meditation interventions in healthy and diseased participants. The review considers the intervention parameters and their effects in a well-organized manner.

Method

A systematic search for clinical and experimental published studies was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane, and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) databases using common keywords for tES and for meditation techniques well defined by previous studies. Unpublished ongoing studies were identified with the ClinicalTrials.gov and DRKS.de clinical trial websites.

Results

20 published studies and 13 ongoing studies were included for qualitative analysis. 13 published articles studied patients with chronic pain, psychological disorders, cognitive impairment, and movement disorders. Anodal tDCS was the only tES technique while mindfulness meditation was the most common meditation type. Eight studies had a main group effect, with outcome improvement in the active combined intervention. However, most published studies showed improvements after at least one combined intervention with variable effects.

Conclusion

Pairing anodal tDCS with meditation shows promising improvements of the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of daily life. Further studies are required to confirm the relevance of this combination in the clinic.

Use of non-invasive neurostimulation for rehabilitation in functional movement disorders

Functional movement disorders (FMD) are a subtype of functional neurological disorders which involve abnormal movements and include multiple phenomenologies. There is a growing interest in the mechanism, diagnosis, and treatment of these disorders. Most of the current therapeutic approaches rely on psychotherapy and physiotherapy conducted by a multidisciplinary team. Although this approach has shown good results in some cases, FMD cause a great burden on the health system and other treatment strategies are urgently needed. In this review, we summarize past studies that have applied non-invasive neurostimulation techniques, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and peripheral nerve stimulation as a treatment for FMD. There is an increasing number of studies related to TMS including randomized controlled trials; however, the protocols amongst studies are not standardized. There is only preliminary evidence for the efficacy of non-invasive neuromodulation in reducing FMD symptoms, and further studies are needed. There is insufficient evidence to allow implementation of these techniques in clinical practice.
