Impact of innovative technologies on quality and safety in surgery

Technological advancements gradually lead to the revision and transformation of healthcare, training, and research. Surgery is a field of medicine where the collaboration of human resources and the application of innovative technologies could elevate faithfulness and efficiency. The article, exploring the technologies and analyzing them in terms of their reliability, the benefits of performing precision surgeries, the effectiveness in the outcome of surgery with less psychosomatic fatigue, and the improvements in the training process for surgeons, emphasizes the safety and quality that can be achieved. The study was conducted by searching the relevant papers mainly from 2016-2024 using different online databases such as Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed to examine the impact of adopting new technologies in medicine. This paper highlights that the use of innovative technologies in a wide range of surgical procedures could, by adapting interdisciplinary procedures, provide significant results in issues related to safety, quality, reliability, and training.

Anesthesia nurses' self-perceived roles, competencies, and attitudes toward patient safety culture

AIM

This study aimed to explore anesthesia nurses' (ANs) perceptions of roles, competencies, and attitudes towards patient safety culture, along with predictive factors for patient safety culture.

INTRODUCTION

The 2021 guidelines from the International Council of Nurses aim to ensure global access to safe surgical and anesthesia care by 2030. However, in Taiwan, the roles and competencies of ANs are still evolving. Many have a limited understanding, posing potential risks to patient safety.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted, involving ANs from five hospitals within a healthcare foundation. ANs' self-perceived roles and competencies were assessed using a structured questionnaire based on the CanMEDS framework from the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists. Additionally, data were collected using the Chinese version of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire. Reporting followed the STROBE guideline.

RESULTS

Among 200 ANs, a consensus emerged favored all roles and competencies, with positive attitudes toward patient safety culture. Remarkably, self-perceived competencies, working in regional hospitals, and working in medical centers significantly predicted ANs' attitude toward patient safety culture.

DISCUSSION

The study results can assist ANs in gaining a deeper understanding of their roles and competencies. Considering predictive factors, strengthening ANs' competencies may contribute to enhancing patient safety culture.

CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

Our results informed nursing leaders and policymakers in Taiwan and other countries regarding ANs' perceptions of roles and competencies. Nurse managers could consider the specific factors influencing ANs' attitudes toward patient safety culture and make great efforts to develop strategies aimed at enhancing their competencies.

Satisfaction as a Mediator and Its Interaction With Adherence to Labor Analgesia Protocols: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Chinese Medical Personnel

Background

Although the Chinese promotion of labor analgesia began in 2018 to improve maternal health, high-quality medical care is difficult to provide to pregnant women when medical staff cannot implement standard labor analgesia procedures. This study aims to examine medical personnel's adherence to labor analgesia protocols and to explore the relationships among adherence, satisfaction, and other factors.

Methods

The data were from a national cross-sectional dataset (N = 13,944) of the 2020 Chinese Labor Analgesia Pilot Evaluation Project. Mediating and moderating effects analyses were used to examine the role of satisfaction as a mediator between support measures and adherence.

Results

There were differences in adherence between different types of medical personnel. Support measures and satisfaction had a positive association with adherence to labor analgesia protocols. Satisfaction had a significant mediating and moderating effect on the relationship between support measures and adherence to labor analgesia standards. Moderating effects of professional titles and attitudes were also observed.

Conclusion

Primary health care policies worth considering include comprehensive incentives for medical institutions to improve the use of labor analgesia by medical personnel. It is also worth considering providing more training opportunities for the staff in anesthesiology departments.
