What Messages About Osteoporosis Are Offered in Spanish Videos on YouTube?

Potential misinformation in websites on carpal tunnel syndrome

Objective

We sought to evaluate the potential reinforcement of misconceptions in websites discussing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Methods

After removing all cookies to limit personalization, we entered "carpal tunnel syndrome" into five search engines and collected the first 50 results displayed for each search. For each of the 105 unique websites, we recorded publication date, author background, and number of views. The prevalence of potential reinforcement and/or reorientation of misconceptions for each website was then scored using a rubric based on our interpretation of the best current evidence regarding CTS. The informational quality of websites was graded with the DISCERN instrument, a validated tool for assessing online health information.

Results

Every website contained at least one potentially misleading statement in our opinion. The most common misconceptions reference "excessive motion" and "inflammation." Greater potential reinforcement of misinformation about CTS was associated with fewer page views and lower informational quality scores.

Conclusions

Keeping in mind that this analysis is based on our interpretation of current best evidence, potential misinformation on websites addressing CTS is common and has the potential to increase symptom intensity and magnitude of incapability via reinforcement of unhelpful thoughts regarding symptoms.

The prevalence of patient-directed health information that can increase discomfort and incapability by reinforcing common unhelpful thoughts supports the need for innovations in how we develop, oversee, and evolve healthy online material.

Assessing Patients Perception: Analyzing the Quality, Reliability, Comprehensibility, and the Mentioned Medical Concepts of Traumatic Brain Injury Videos on YouTube

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study is to analyze the quality, reliability, comprehensibility, and the mentioned medical concepts of traumatic brain injury (TBI) related videos on YouTube.

METHODS

"Traumatic brain injury (TBI)" and Google Trends related queries were used, and 328 videos were included. Categorization, quality assessment via a 5-point Global Quality Scale, reliability evaluation using a modified DISCERN scale, comprehensibility assessment using Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, and consensus-based classification for usefulness were performed. Target audience categorization was content-based. Text mining techniques were used to identify biomedical terms in video transcripts.

RESULTS

Most of the videos were intended for nonhealthcare professionals and deemed useful. The videos had intermediate quality and a moderate level of reliability. The comprehensibility of the videos exceeded the recommended levels. Videos predominantly covered TBI symptoms, the severity of the condition, its impact on individuals, and possibly strategies related to diagnosis and treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

Results suggest the requirement for higher quality and reliability in YouTube content about TBI. Emphasis should be placed on clear and accurate language to promote comprehensibility. Continued research, guidelines, education, and platform oversight can enhance the spread of reliable health information on social media, benefiting creators, and consumers in this field.

The quality and reliability analysis of YouTube videos about insulin resistance

AIM

There is an increasing trend in the use of internet as a search tool for health-related informations. Insulin resistance is one of the most searched subjects online and some of the videos about insulin resistance have been watched by millions of YouTube users. This study aims to determine the quality and reliability of the most popular videos about insulin resistance on YouTube.

METHODS

On March 1, 2022, the term "insulin resistance" was searched on YouTube. The videos' popularity was assessed with Video Power Index (VPI). The quality and reliability were assessed with DISCERN score, modified DISCERN score and global quality score (GQS).

RESULTS

A total of 100 most popular videos were evaluated after applying the exclusion criteria. Fifty-four percent of the videos were very poor-poor, 35 % moderate, and 11 % good-excellent quality. Although few in number, the videos with relatively higher quality and more reliable had higher numbers of views, likes and comments (p < 0.01). There was a positive correlation between DISCERN score and VPI, duration, view, like, dislike, comment numbers of the videos (p < 0.01). Healthcare providers uploaded 58 % of the videos, while independent users uploaded 42 %. Video like ratio (VLR) at healthcare providers' videos was significantly higher than independent users' videos (p = 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Despite the high viewing rates of YouTube videos about insulin resistance, the overall quality and reliability were found to be very low. However, when high quality content regarding popular medical topics is produced, more people can be informed correctly.

Quality of English-language videos available on YouTube as a source of information on osteoporosis

Osteoporosis awareness is essential for preventing osteoporotic fractures. Social media platforms have enormous potential to both support and deter patients' decisions on healthcare. The current study demonstrated that the majority of YouTube videos on osteoporosis provide useful information with sufficient quality.

PURPOSE

YouTube is the most popular video-sharing platform for patients seeking online information about their medical condition. However, there are concerns regarding the accuracy and quality of YouTube content. We aimed to analyze the quality of English-language YouTube videos on osteoporosis.

METHODS

A YouTube search was performed on April 21, 2021, using the keywords "osteoporosis," "osteoporosis exercise," "osteoporosis diet," and "osteoporosis treatment." The reviewers recorded the content, source, and detailed characteristics of the included videos. The reliability and quality of the videos were analyzed using the modified DISCERN score and Global Quality Scale (GQS) score by a rheumatologist and endocrinologist.

RESULTS

Of the 400 videos screened, 238 were included in the study after applying the exclusion criteria. A total of 205 (86.1%) videos revealed useful information about osteoporosis whereas 33 (13.9%) were misleading. In terms of quality, 48% of the videos were of high quality, 34% were of moderate quality, and 18% were of low quality. The videos posted by universities and professional organizations had the highest modified DISCERN and GQS scores indicating high reliability and quality.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrated that the majority of YouTube videos on osteoporosis contained useful information with sufficient quality. However, physicians should be aware of misleading information and correct any misinformation during face-to-face meetings with patients. YouTube should consider creating partnerships with professional organizations in the field of osteoporosis to produce high-quality videos in line with their new health content policy.
