Abstract
Background Rhinoplasty is one of the most common aesthetic plastic surgery procedures. Complications can lead to both aesthetic and functional impairments. The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) Harms statement was developed to promote improved reporting of harm across randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Objectives The aim of this systematic review is to assess harms reporting quality across RCTs on aesthetic rhinoplasty. Methods A literature search was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE and Embase databases (January 1, 2005 to August 4, 2023). RCTs which compared 2 or more interventions in rhinoplasty with primarily aesthetic indications and assessed patient-important outcomes were included. The reporting quality was assessed by following a 40-item checklist endorsed by the 2022 CONSORT Harms Extension update. Results A total of 58 RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Fifteen RCTs addressed harms of treatment in some capacity. Overall, the reporting quality across RCTs was poor, with a median CONSORT Harms score of 33% (range, 16%-83%). A reporting adherence of ≥50% was met by only 8 studies. There was no significant difference in reporting adherence between studies based on journal endorsement of CONSORT or industry vs nonindustry funding sources (P > .05). A high journal impact factor was significantly associated with a higher reporting quality (P = .044). Conclusions CONSORT Harms reporting adherence was poor across the majority of included RCTs. Future trials on aesthetic rhinoplasty should aim to follow the reporting recommendations endorsed by the CONSORT Harms statement to increase transparency and minimize heterogeneity in harms reporting across studies. Abstract
BACKGROUND In the field of plastic and aesthetic surgery, continuous international publication is seen annually. However, the publication output is not regularly assessed for its level of evidence. In view of the strong publication activity, a regular assessment of the evidence level of the current publication years is reasonable and was the objective of this work. MATERIAL AND METHODS We evaluated the Journal of Hand Surgery/JHS (European Volume Journal), the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery/PRS and the journal Handchirurgie, Mikrochirurgie und Plastische Chirurige/HaMiPla from January 2019 to December 2021. The authors' affiliation, the type of publication, the number of patients examined and the level of evidence with existing conflicts of interest were considered. RESULTS A total of 1341 publications were evaluated. Of these, 334 original papers were published in JHS, 896 in PRS, and 111 in HaMiPla. The largest share were retrospective papers (53.5%, n=718). The further distribution was as follows: 18% (n=237) clinical prospective papers, 3.4% (n=47) randomised clinical trials (RCT), 12.5% (n=168) experimental papers and 6.5% (n=88) anatomic studies. The distribution of evidence levels of all studies was as follows: Level I: 1.6% (n=21), Level II: 8.7% (n=116), Level III: 20.3% (n=272), Level IV: 25.2% (n=338), Level V: 2.3% (n=31). In 42% (n=563) of the papers, there was no indication of the level of evidence. Most level I evidence was from university hospitals (n=16) in 76.2% (χ²-test 0.619, >0.05, 95% confidence interval). CONCLUSION Although RCTs are inappropriate for many surgical questions, well-designed and conducted cohort or case-control studies could improve the evidence base. Many of the current studies tend to be retrospective and do not have a control group. Researchers in the field of plastic surgery should consider using a cohort or case-control design when an RCT is not feasible.

Abstract
Surgical registries have provided reliable, generalizable, and applicable clinical data that have shaped many fields. Broad collection of defined data can answer clinical questions with greater numbers of patients and more ability to generalize to routine clinical care than randomized trials. National hand surgical registries exist outside the United States. Before the pursuit of a registry, the focus of such an effort must be defined to ensure that registry goals are feasible. This article presents the consensus process conducted by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand's Registry Task Force exploring potential diagnoses for a hand registry.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Evidence-based medicine underpins clinical practice. Ideally, our clinical decision-making stems from systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials. However, in practice, this is not often the case, and we must instead rely on the best available evidence. RECENT FINDINGS We review the history of evidence-based research, the development of the levels of evidence, and the relationship of evidence and bias present in craniomaxillofacial surgery. We also discuss the recent trends in CMF publications and identify areas for improvement. SUMMARY Because of inherent challenges, the quality of evidence in craniomaxillofacial surgery lags behind other surgical and medical specialties. However, over recent years this has improved significantly, with better reporting of data and a higher rate of randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
Considerable variation exists in the practice of hand surgery that may lead to wasteful spending and less than optimal quality of care. Hand surgeons can benefit from a centralized system that tracks process and outcome measures, delivers national benchmarking, and encourages the sharing of knowledge. A national registry can fulfill these needs for hand surgeons and incorporate quality improvement into their daily routine. Leaders in hand surgery should convene to appraise the organization of a national registry for their field and reach consensus on how the registry can be designed and funded.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study validated data that had been reported to the Swedish Quality Registry for Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) under new requirements from 2016, when use of the 5-year-old (5YO) and the Modified Huddart and Bodenham (MHB) indices for rating occlusion in children born with unilateral CLP (UCLP) was introduced. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample included blinded study casts (n = 97) and photos (n = 4) of 5-year-old children who had been born with UCLP in 2009-2011 and were enrolled at one of six cleft centres in Sweden. Fourteen orthodontists from the centres assessed the patients (n = 101) using the 5YO and the MHB indices. Median 5YO and MHB scores of the 14 assessments were compared with original registry data (n = 61). Each centre devised code keys to protect the identities of their patients in the registry. RESULTS Interrater agreement among the 14 orthodontists was good for the 5YO index (quadratic-weighted kappa: 0.72-0.92) and the MHB index (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.991-0.994). Comparisons of median 5YOs for each identifiable child with their registry data (n = 61) found total agreement for 70.5 per cent. Comparisons between median MHBs and registry data showed very good or good agreement in 93.4 per cent of the cases. LIMITATIONS Two teams lost their code keys, which reduced the sample to 61 patients. CONCLUSIONS The dentoalveolar outcome data in the CLP registry was trustworthy. There was good agreement among the Swedish cleft teams assessing the 5YO and MHB indices in children born with UCLP at age 5 years.

Abstract
Levels of evidence (LOE) aid in the critical appraisal of evidence by ranking studies based on limitation of its design. Analyzing LOE provides insight into application of evidence-based medicine. The aim of this study is to determine if the quality of evidence in plastic surgery research has improved over the past 10 years. Systematic review of research published in Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery journal over the years, 10-year period (2008, 2013, 2018), was performed. LOE for each article was determined using the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) guidelines. Each level was calculated as percentage of publications per year and compared yearly and between different topics. Eight hundred eighty-four studies were included in the final analysis. The LOE of the research improved over the study period. Level 4 evidence was the most frequent published (50.6%, 447/884), with a decline from 63.2% in 2008 to 41.3% in 2018. Level 1 evidence improved each year and accounted for 2.1% of all research in 2018. Aesthetic surgery was the most frequent published topic with upper limb research demonstrating an 18.5% increase in high-quality evidence over the study period. Increased awareness of evidence-based medicine has improved the quality of plastic surgery research over the past decade. It is vital this continues to provide gold standard patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are gold standard assessments for healthcare interventions. The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement was published to maximize RCT reporting transparency. The authors conducted a systematic review to assess current compliance of RCTs published within craniofacial surgery with the CONSORT statement. METHODS The Thomson Reuters Impact Factor Report 2016 was consulted to identify craniofacial surgery journals. PubMed was used to search for recent RCTs published within the 5 journals identified. Two independent researchers assessed each study for inclusion and performed data extraction. The primary outcome was compliance of each RCT with the CONSORT statement. Secondary outcomes were the pathology and interventions examined, impact factor, multi-versus-single center, number of authors, and publication date. RESULTS Eighty-six studies met the inclusion criteria, across which a median of 56% (range 33%-94%) applicable CONSORT items were reported. The 5 least reported items were: trial design (3a); registration number and name of trial registry (23); who generated random allocation sequences, enrolled participants, and assigned participants to interventions (10); sample size determination (7a); mentioning "randomized trial" in the title (1a). CONCLUSION The compliance of craniofacial surgery RCTs with the CONSORT statement requires improvement. Areas in need are identified, and methods to improve reporting transparency, are discussed.

Abstract
Introduction The role of clinical trials in medicine is expanding, particularly in surgery. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) represent the gold standard evidence for high-quality assessment of healthcare interventions. The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidance has been published to maximise RCT reporting transparency. This paper outlines the study protocol for a systematic review that will assess the current compliance of RCTs published within craniofacial surgery with the CONSORT criteria. The aims are to identify areas where reporting can be improved to ensure craniofacial surgery is guided by high-quality evidence. Methods and analysis This protocol is compliant with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and meta-Analysis protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines. Craniofacial surgery RCTs will be identified by searching within craniofacial surgery journals. Five journals from the Thomson Reuters Impact Factor Report 2016 included 'cranio' in their title and were included. MEDLINE PubMed will be used to search all RCTs published in these journals. The search strategy is described within this protocol. It will be limited to articles written in English, conducted on humans, and published in the last five years. Two independent researchers will assess each study for inclusion and will perform the data extraction. The researchers will assess compliance of each RCT with the 25-item CONSORT Statement checklist as the primary outcome. Discrepancies will be resolved through consensus or third author arbitration. Secondary outcomes to be extracted include the pathology and interventions examined, and indices of RCT quality. The systematic review will be compliant with PRISMA guidelines. The review has been registered a priori with the Registry of Systematic Reviews/meta-analyses (UIN: reviewregistry219). Ethics and dissemination This systematic review will be conducted in line with the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews and Interventions. The intent is to publish in a peer-reviewed journal and present the data at relevant conferences.

Abstract
SUMMARY Clinical data registries are commonly used worldwide and are implemented for a variety of purposes ranging from physician or facility clinic logs for tracking patients, to collecting outcomes data, to measuring quality improvement or safety of medical devices. In the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has used data collected through registries to facilitate the drug and device regulatory process, for ongoing surveillance during the product life cycle, and for disease appraisals. Furthermore, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, in certain instances, bases registry participation and submitting data to registries as factors for reimbursement decisions. The purpose of this article is to discuss the use of clinical data registries; the role that medical specialty societies, in particular, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Plastic Surgery Foundation, can have in the development and management of registries; and the opportunities for registry use in plastic surgery. As outcomes data are becoming essential measures of quality health care delivery, participation in registry development and centralized data collection has become a critical task for plastic surgery to engage in to proactively participate in the national quality and performance measurement agenda.
