Abstract
To better understand the secret of natural flying vertebrates such as how humming-birds twist their wings to achieve superb flight ability, we presented a numerical investigation of dynamic twisting based on a hummingbird-like flapping wing model. Computational fluid dynamic simulations were performed to examine the effects of dynamic twisting on the unsteady flow field, the generation of instantaneous aerodynamic forces, and the time-averaged aerodynamic performance. This research reveals the details of leading-edge vortices (LEVs) and the underlying mechanisms behind the positive effects of wing torsion. The results demonstrated that wing torsion can effectively maintain the favorable distribution of effective angle of attack along the wing spanwise, resulting in a higher time-averaged thrust and vertical force. Further, the proper parameters of dynamic twisting can also improve the propulsive efficiency in forward flight. Dynamic twisting also showed a superior ability in controlling the airflow separation over the wing surface and maintaining the stability of the LEV. The amplitudes of effective angle of attack associated with the highest peak thrust and the maximum thrust-to-power at different advanced ratios were also explored, and it was found that the amplitudes decrease with increasing advanced ratio. To improve the efficiency during larger advanced ratio, specific modifications to the pitching of the wing were proposed in this work. The research in this paper has promising implications for the bio-inspired flapping wing.

Abstract
Hummingbirds outperform other birds in terms of aerial agility at low flight speeds. To reveal the key mechanisms that enable such unparalleled agility, we reconstructed body and wing motion of hummingbird escape manoeuvres from high-speed videos; then, we performed computational fluid dynamics modelling and flight mechanics analysis, in which the time-dependent forces within each wingbeat were resolved. We found that the birds may use the inertia of their wings to achieve peak body rotational acceleration around wing reversal when the aerodynamic forces were small. The aerodynamic forces instead counteracted the reversed inertial forces at a different wingbeat phase, thereby stabilizing the body from inertial oscillations, or they could become dominant and provide additional rotational acceleration. Our results suggest such an inertial steering mechanism was present for all four hummingbird species considered, and it was used by the birds for both pitch-up and roll accelerations. The combined inertial steering and aerodynamic mechanisms made it possible for the hummingbirds to generate instantaneous body acceleration at any phase of a wingbeat, and this feature is probably the key to understanding the unique dexterity distinguishing hummingbirds from other small-size flyers that solely rely on aerodynamics for manoeuvering.

Abstract
Natural phenomena such as insect migration and the thermal soaring of birds in turbulent environments demonstrate animals' abilities to exploit complex flow structures without knowledge of global velocity profiles. Similar energy-harvesting features can be observed in other natural phenomena such as particle transport in turbulent fluids. This paper presents a new feedback control approach inspired by experimental studies on particle transport that have recently illuminated particles' ability to traverse homogeneous turbulence through the so-called fast-tracking effect. While in nature fast tracking is observed only in particles with inertial characteristics that match the flow parameters, the new fast-tracking feedback control approach presented in this paper employs available propulsion and actuation to allow the vehicle to respond to the surrounding flow in the same manner as ideal fast-tracking particles would. The resulting fast-tracking closed-loop controlled vehicle is then able to leverage homogeneous turbulent flow structures, such as sweeping eddies, to reduce travel time and energy consumption. The fast-tracking approach is shown to significantly outperform existing optimal control solutions, such as linear quadratic regulator and bang-bang control, and to be robust to changes in the vehicle characteristics and/or turbulent flow parameters.

Abstract
In terms of their flight and unusual aerodynamic characteristics, mosquitoes have become a new insect of interest. Despite transmitting the most significant infectious diseases globally, mosquitoes are still among the great flyers. Depending on their size, they typically beat at a high flapping frequency in the range of 600 to 800 Hz. Flapping also lets them conceal their presence, flirt, and help them remain aloft. Their long, slender wings navigate between the most anterior and posterior wing positions through a stroke amplitude about 40 to 45°, way different from their natural counterparts (>120°). Most insects use leading-edge vortex for lift, but mosquitoes have additional aerodynamic characteristics: rotational drag, wake capture reinforcement of the trailing-edge vortex, and added mass effect. A comprehensive look at the use of these three mechanisms needs to be undertaken-the pros and cons of high-frequency, low-stroke angles, operating far beyond the normal kinematic boundary compared to other insects, and the impact on the design improvements of miniature drones and for flight in low-density atmospheres such as Mars. This paper systematically reviews these unique unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of mosquito flight, responding to the potential questions from some of these discoveries as per the existing literature. This paper also reviews state-of-the-art insect-inspired robots that are close in design to mosquitoes. The findings suggest that mosquito-based small robots can be an excellent choice for flight in a low-density environment such as Mars.

Abstract
The lift that animal wings generate to fly is typically considered a vertical force that supports weight, while drag is considered a horizontal force that opposes thrust. To determine how birds use lift and drag, here we report aerodynamic forces and kinematics of Pacific parrotlets (Forpus coelestis) during short, foraging flights. At takeoff they incline their wing stroke plane, which orients lift forward to accelerate and drag upward to support nearly half of their bodyweight. Upon landing, lift is oriented backward to contribute a quarter of the braking force, which reduces the aerodynamic power required to land. Wingbeat power requirements are dominated by downstrokes, while relatively inactive upstrokes cost almost no aerodynamic power. The parrotlets repurpose lift and drag during these flights with lift-to-drag ratios below two. Such low ratios are within range of proto-wings, showing how avian precursors may have relied on drag to take off with flapping wings. Recent work has suggested that lift and drag may be employed differently in slow, flapping flight compared to classic flight aerodynamics. Here the authors develop a method to measure vertical and horizontal aerodynamic forces simultaneously and use it to quantify lift and drag during slow flight.

Abstract
A lift enhancement mechanism due to wing-body interaction (WBI) was previously proved to be significant in the forward flight of insect flyers with wide-shape bodies, such as cicada. In order to further explore WBI and its lift enhancement effect in a flapping flight platform with different wing and body shapes, numerical investigations of WBI were performed on the forward flight of a hummingbird in this paper. A high-fidelity computational model of a hummingbird in forward flight was modeled with its geometric complexity. The wing kinematics of flapping flight were prescribed using experimental data from previous literature. An immersed-boundary-method-based incompressible Navier‒Stokes solver was used for the 3D flow simulations of the wing-body system. Analyses on aerodynamic performances and vortex dynamics of three models, including the wing-body (WB), wing-only (WO), and body-only (BO) models, were made to examine the effect of WBI. Results have shown significant overall lift enhancement (OLE) due to WBI. The total lift force of the WB model increased by 29% compared with its WO/BO counterparts. Vortex dynamics results showed formations of unique body vortex pairs on the dorsal thorax of hummingbird where low-pressure zones were created to generate more body lift. Significant interactions between body vortex and leading-edge vortex (LEV) were observed, resulting in strengthened LEVs near the wing root and enhanced wing lift generation during downstroke. Parametric studies showed strong OLEs over wide ranges of body angle and advance ratio, respectively. The contribution of OLE from the hummingbird body increased with increasing body angle, and the wing pair's contribution increased as advance ratio increased. Results from this paper supported that lift enhancement due to WBI is potentially a general mechanism adopted by different kinds of flapping-wing flyers, and demonstrated the potential of WBI in the design of flapping-wing micro aerial vehicle (MAV) that pursue higher performance.

Abstract
Animal wings are lightweight and flexible; hence, during flapping flight their shapes change. It has been known that such dynamic wing morphing reduces aerodynamic cost in insects, but the consequences in vertebrate flyers, particularly birds, are not well understood. We have developed a method to reconstruct a three-dimensional wing model of a bird from the wing outline and the feather shafts (rachides). The morphological and kinematic parameters can be obtained using the wing model, and the numerical or mechanical simulations may also be carried out. To test the effectiveness of the method, we recorded the hovering flight of a hummingbird (Amazilia amazilia) using high-speed cameras and reconstructed the right wing. The wing shape varied substantially within a stroke cycle. Specifically, the maximum and minimum wing areas differed by 18%, presumably due to feather sliding; the wing was bent near the wrist joint, towards the upward direction and opposite to the stroke direction; positive upward camber and the 'washout' twist (monotonic decrease in the angle of incidence from the proximal to distal wing) were observed during both half-strokes; the spanwise distribution of the twist was uniform during downstroke, but an abrupt increase near the wrist joint was found during upstroke.
