Hartree-Fock implementation using a Laguerre-based wave function for the ground state and correlation energies of two-electron atoms

The electron-centric approach to the exchange-correlation energy

The Kohn-Sham theory addresses the challenge of representing the kinetic energy by re-quantizing density functional theory at a level of non-interacting electrons. It transforms the many-electron problem into a fictitious non-interacting electron problem, with the many-electron effects concealed within the exchange-correlation (XC) energy, which is expressed in terms of the electron density ρ(r). Unlike the wave function, ρ(r) can be viewed as a classical quantity, and expressing the XC energy in terms of it circumvents the need for correlated wave functions. In this work, we once again employ the re-quantization strategy and determine the XC energy using a local one-particle Schrödinger equation. The ground-state eigenfunction of the corresponding Hamiltonian is a reference point (r) dependent orbital φr,σ(u, σ') which is subsequently used to generate the XC hole and the XC energy. The spin coordinate is denoted by σ and u is the electron-electron separation. The one-particle equation for φr,σ(u, σ') includes a local potential vr,σ(u, σ') that we approximate using two simple physical constraints. We assess the approximation by applying it to the helium iso-electronic series, the homogeneous electron gas, and the dissociation of the hydrogen molecule.

Hartree-Fock critical nuclear charge in two-electron atoms

Electron correlation effects play a key role in stabilizing two-electron atoms near the critical nuclear charge, representing the smallest charge required to bind two electrons. However, deciphering the importance of these effects relies on fully understanding the uncorrelated Hartree-Fock description. We investigate the properties of the ground state wave function in the small nuclear charge limit using various symmetry-restricted Hartree-Fock formalisms. We identify the nuclear charge where spin-symmetry breaking occurs to give an unrestricted wave function that predicts an inner and outer electron. We also identify closed-shell and unrestricted critical nuclear charges where the highest occupied orbital energy becomes zero and the electron density detaches from the nucleus. Finally, we identify the importance of fractional spin errors and static correlation for small nuclear charges.

Electron correlation in Li+, He, H- and the critical nuclear charge system Z C : energies, densities and Coulomb holes

This paper presents high-accuracy correlation energies, intracule densities and Coulomb hole(s) for the lithium cation, helium, hydride ion and the system with the critical nuclear charge, Z C , for binding two electrons. The fully correlated (FC) wave function and the Hartree-Fock (HF) wave function are both determined using a Laguerre-based wave function. It is found that for the lithium cation and the helium atom a secondary Coulomb hole is present, in agreement with a previous literature finding, confirming a counterintuitive conclusion that electron correlation can act to bring distant electrons closer together. However, no evidence for a tertiary Coulomb hole is found. For the hydride anion and the system just prior to electron detachment only a single Coulomb hole is present and electron correlation decreases the probability of finding the electrons closer together at all radial distances. The emergence of a secondary Coulomb hole is investigated and found to occur between Z = 1.15 and Z = 1.20. The FC and HF energies and intracule densities (in atomic units) used to calculate the correlation energy and Coulomb hole, respectively, are accurate to at least the nano-scale for helium and the cation and at least the micro-scale for the anions.
