Predictive Framework for Flow Reversals and Excursions in Turbulence

We present a dynamical framework for intermittent reversals and excursions (R&Es) of large-scale circulations in turbulence. We show that R&Es can occur when turbulent trajectories in phase space shadow invariant manifolds of certain unstable periodic orbits (UPOs). Consequently, substantial flow reorganization and extreme fluctuations in flow metrics observed during R&Es can be reconstructed by splicing the unstable manifolds of such dynamically relevant UPOs. Using this geometrical framework, we predict imminent R&Es and preemptively avert these extreme events using closed-loop control.

Routes to turbulence in Taylor-Couette flow

Fluid flows between rotating concentric cylinders exhibit two distinct routes to turbulence. In flows dominated by inner-cylinder rotation, a sequence of linear instabilities leads to temporally chaotic dynamics as the rotation speed is increased. The resulting flow patterns occupy the whole system and sequentially lose spatial symmetry and coherence in the transition process. In flows dominated by outer-cylinder rotation, the transition is abrupt and leads directly to turbulent flow regions that compete with laminar ones. We here review the main features of these two routes to turbulence. Bifurcation theory rationalizes the origin of temporal chaos in both cases. However, the catastrophic transition of flows dominated by outer-cylinder rotation can only be understood by accounting for the spatial proliferation of turbulent regions with a statistical approach. We stress the role of the rotation number (the ratio of Coriolis to inertial forces) and show that it determines the lower border for the existence of intermittent laminar-turbulent patterns. Memoryless drop breakup in turbulence

The breakup of drops and bubbles in turbulent fluids is a key mechanism in many environmental and engineering processes. Even in the well-studied dilute case, quantitative descriptions of drop fragmentation remain elusive, and empirical models continue to proliferate. We here investigate drop breakup by leveraging a novel computer code, which enables the generation of ensembles of experiments with thousands of independent, fully resolved simulations. We show that in homogeneous isotropic turbulence breakup is a memoryless process whose rate depends only on the Weber number. A simple model based on the computed breakup rates can accurately predict experimental measurements and demonstrates that dilute emulsions evolve through a continuous fragmentation process with exponentially increasing time scales. Our results suggest a nonvanishing breakup rate below the critical Kolmogorov-Hinze diameter, challenging the current paradigm of inertial drop fragmentation.

Mechanism for turbulence proliferation in subcritical flows

The subcritical transition to turbulence, as occurs in pipe flow, is believed to generically be a phase transition in the directed percolation universality class. At its heart is a balance between the decay rate and proliferation rate of localized turbulent structures, called puffs in pipe flow. Here, we propose the first-ever dynamical mechanism for puff proliferation—the process by which a puff splits into two. In the first stage of our mechanism, a puff expands into a slug. In the second stage, a laminar gap is formed within the turbulent core. The notion of a split-edge state, mediating the transition from a single puff to a two-puff state, is introduced and its form is predicted. The role of fluctuations in the two stages of the transition, and how splits could be suppressed with increasing Reynolds number, are discussed. Using numerical simulations, the mechanism is validated within the stochastic Barkley model. Concrete predictions to test the proposed mechanism in pipe and other wall-bounded flows, and implications for the universality of the directed percolation picture, are discussed.

Editorial: Mathematical problems in physical fluid dynamics: part II

Fluid dynamics is a research area lying at the crossroads of physics and applied mathematics with an ever-expanding range of applications in natural sciences and engineering. However, despite decades of concerted research efforts, this area abounds with many fundamental questions that still remain unanswered. At the heart of these problems often lie mathematical models, usually in the form of partial differential equations, and many of the open questions concern the validity of these models and what can be learned from them about the physical problems. In recent years, significant progress has been made on a number of open problems in this area, often using approaches that transcend traditional discipline boundaries by combining modern methods of modelling, computation and mathematical analysis. The two-part theme issue aims to represent the breadth of these approaches, focusing on problems that are mathematical in nature but help to understand aspects of real physical importance such as fluid dynamical stability, transport, mixing, dissipation and vortex dynamics.
