Riding across the selection landscape: fitness consequences of annual variation in reproductive characteristics

Persistent Habitat Instability and Patchiness, Sexual Attraction, Founder Events, Drift and Selection: A Recipe for Rapid Diversification of Orchids

Orchidaceae is one of the most species-rich families of flowering plants, with most current diversity having evolved within the last 5 My. Patterns associated with species richness and rapid diversification have been identified but have not often been associated with evolutionary processes. We review the most frequently identified correlates of diversity and suggest that the processes and rate by which they occur vary geographically and are largely dependent on persistent pulses of habitat instabilities, especially for epiphytes. Aggressive orogenesis creates fragmented habitats while global climatic cycles exacerbate the ecological instabilities. The need for repeated cycles of dispersal results in frequent founder events, which sets the stage for allopatric diversification via bouts of genetic drift and natural selection. The allopatry requirement can be bypassed by pollination systems involving flowers attracting pollinators through the production of sex signaling semiochemicals. The drift-selection model of diversification, coupled with persistent habitat instability throughout ecological and geological time scales, and sex signaling are the likely components of a multifactorial process leading to the rapid, recent diversification in this family.

What are the drivers of female success in food-deceptive orchids?

A large suite of floral signals, and environmental and biotic characteristics influence the behavior of pollinators, affecting the female success of food-deceptive orchids. In this study, we examined the many factors shaping the reproductive output of three orchid taxa: Dactylorhiza majalis, D. incarnata var. incarnata, and D. fuchsii. We applied a statistical model to correlate female success (number of fruit sets) with individual characteristics (plant and inflorescence height, number of flowers, and spur length), number of pollinaria removed, flowering time, and density of floral units of co-flowering rewarding plants. Our findings suggested that the broad spectrum of variations in Dactylorhiza's morphological traits, floral display, and flowering phenology within different environmental contexts has a significant impact on their reproductive success. The number of fruits increased with an increase in the number of pollinaria removed in the studied Dactylorhiza taxa. In contrast, a higher number of flowers per inflorescence and higher inflorescences in relation to individual height always decreased fruit set. We observed that low number of co-flowering rewarding plants in populations could affect the Dactylorhiza reproductive output as magnets and competitor plants. The synchronization of flowering, or lack thereof, between Dactylorhiza and rewarding plants can limit reproductive success. This demonstrates that the food deception strategy is multidirectional, and reproductive output can vary considerably both spatially and temporally within the context of this strategy.

The effect of habitat transformation on a twig epiphytic orchid: Evidence from population dynamics

The tropical Andean landscape has been dramatically transformed over the last century with remaining native forest limited to small fragments within a heterogeneous matrix of crops, cattle pastures, and urban environments. We aimed to explore the impact of habitat transformation on the population dynamics in an endemic twig epiphytic orchid located within the undisturbed forest and within modified matrix habitat in two regions with contrasting landscape structures: with a dominant shade coffee matrix and a dominant grassland matrix. Over 2 years, we surveyed 4,650 individuals of the Colombian endemic orchid, Rodriguezia granadensis. We undertook four post-breeding censuses in three sites in each region in both native forest and pasture sub-sites (12 sub-sites; 48 censuses in total), and constructed demographic transition matrices (n = 36). The transition probabilities were calculated using a Bayesian approach and population grow rates were evaluated using asymptotic models and elasticities using transient dynamics. Between regions, higher population growth rate and inertia (defined as the largest or smallest long-term population density with the same initial density distribution) was seen in the shade coffee-dominated landscape. Additionally, population growth rate and damping ratio was higher in forest compared with pasture, with lower convergence time for the forest subsites. These demographic patterns reveal the contrasting levels of population resilience of this orchid in different landscape structures with the more connected shade-coffee dominated landscape permitting some healthier populations with greater population growth and survival in forest than pasture. This study highlights that twig epiphyte colonization of isolated phorophytes in pastures should not be interpreted as a sign of a healthy population but as a temporal transitory period.

Fluctuating selection across years and phenotypic variation in food-deceptive orchids

Nectarless flowers that deceive pollinators offer an opportunity to study asymmetric plant-insect interactions. Orchids are a widely used model for studying these interactions because they encompass several thousand species adopting deceptive pollination systems. High levels of intra-specific phenotypic variation have been reported in deceptive orchids, suggesting a reduced consistency of pollinator-mediated selection on their floral traits. Nevertheless, several studies report on widespread directional selection mediated by pollinators even in these deceptive orchids. In this study we test the hypothesis that the observed selection can fluctuate across years in strength and direction thus likely contributing to the phenotypic variability of this orchid group. We performed a three-year study estimating selection differentials and selection gradients for nine phenotypic traits involved in insect attraction in two Mediterranean orchid species, namely Orchis mascula and O. pauciflora, both relying on a well-described food-deceptive pollination strategy. We found weak directional selection and marginally significant selection gradients in the two investigated species with significant intra-specific differences in selection differentials across years. Our data do not link this variation with a specific environmental cause, but our results suggest that pollinator-mediated selection in food-deceptive orchids can change in strength and in direction over time. In perennial plants, such as orchids, different selection differentials in the same populations in different flowering seasons can contribute to the maintenance of phenotypic variation often reported in deceptive orchids.
