Different bees, different needs: how nest-site requirements have shaped the decision-making processes in homeless honeybees (Apis spp.)

A preliminary detective survey of hymenopteran insects at Jazan Lake Dam Region, Southwest of Saudi Arabia

A preliminary detective survey for the hymenopteran insect fauna of Jazan Lake dam region, Southwest Saudi Arabia, was carried out for one year from January 2018 to January 2019 using mainly sweep nets and Malaise traps. The survey revealed the presence of three hymenopteran Superfamilies (Apoidea, Vespoidea and Evanioidea) representing 15 species belonging to 10 genera of 6 families (Apidae, Crabronidae, Sphecidae, Vespidae, Mutillidae, and Evaniidae). The largest number of species has belonged to the family Crabronidae is represented by 6 species under 2 genera. While the family Apidae, is represented by 2 species under 2 genera. Family Vespidae is represented by 2 species of one genus. While, the rest of the families Sphecidae, Mutillida, and Evaniidae each is represented by only one species and one genus each. Eleven species are predators, two species are pollinators and two species are parasitics. Note for each family was provided, and species was provided with synonyms and general and taxonomic remarks and their worldwide geographic distribution and information about their economic importance are also included. All species were photographed with dorsal and lateral views.

Collective decision-making when quantity is more important than quality: Lessons from a kidnapping social parasite

Identifying the general principles that shape mechanisms of collective decision-making requires studies that span a diversity of ecological contexts. However, collective decision-making has only been explored in a handful of systems. Here, I investigate the ecologically mediated costs and benefits of collective decisions by socially parasitic kidnapping ants Temnothorax americanus over where to launch raids to steal host brood. I first investigate their sampling strategies and preferences with choice tests. Using more realistic spatial scales, I confirm the findings of others that colonies use a sequential choice strategy, and do not compare options simultaneously. I then ask which ecological conditions could favour the evolution of this strategy by testing the following hypotheses from optimal foraging and mate choice theories: (a) raiding decisions are time constrained or (b) search payoffs are low due to resource uniformity. Spatial distribution and phenological data on nest contents support the time constraints hypothesis. Host nests contain an optimal ratio of brood and workers for a brief period relative to discovery rates. Colonies therefore benefit from raiding most nests they find in this period rather than deliberating over the best choice, favouring host quantity over quality. The decision strategy for raids uncovered here contrasts with best-of-n collective decision-making found in other systems. These findings demonstrate that ecological constraints on information acquisition can alter how collectives process information.

Collective movement in ecology: from emerging technologies to conservation and management

Recent advances in technology and quantitative methods have led to the emergence of a new field of study that stands to link insights of researchers from two closely related, but often disconnected disciplines: movement ecology and collective animal behaviour. To date, the field of movement ecology has focused on elucidating the internal and external drivers of animal movement and the influence of movement on broader ecological processes. Typically, tracking and/or remote sensing technology is employed to study individual animals in natural conditions. By contrast, the field of collective behaviour has quantified the significant role social interactions play in the decision-making of animals within groups and, to date, has predominantly relied on controlled laboratory-based studies and theoretical models owing to the constraints of studying interacting animals in the field. This themed issue is intended to formalize the burgeoning field of collective movement ecology which integrates research from both movement ecology and collective behaviour. In this introductory paper, we set the stage for the issue by briefly examining the approaches and current status of research in these areas. Next, we outline the structure of the theme issue and describe the obstacles collective movement researchers face, from data acquisition in the field to analysis and problems of scale, and highlight the key contributions of the assembled papers. We finish by presenting research that links individual and broad-scale ecological and evolutionary processes to collective movement, and finally relate these concepts to emerging challenges for the management and conservation of animals on the move in a world that is increasingly impacted by human activity.This article is part of the theme issue 'Collective movement ecology'.
