Saezia sanguinis gen. nov., sp. nov., a Betaproteobacteria member of order Burkholderiales, isolated from human blood

Seasonal and Regional Dynamics of the Intestinal Microbiota in Schizothorax nukiangensis from the Nujiang River

The dynamic alterations in intestinal microbiota can provide insights into the adaptive relationships between these microorganisms and their hosts in response to environmental changes. Schizothorax nukiangensis is widely distributed throughout the Nujiang River and exhibits numerous unique adaptations. In this study, we collected samples of S. nukiangensis across different seasons and regions within the Nujiang River to comprehensively elucidate the diversity and composition of its intestinal microbiota using metagenomic technology. The results indicated that Firmicutes and Proteobacteria predominated at the phylum level, while Priestia, Bacillus, and Aeromonas were the most abundant genera identified. Notably, the relative abundance of these microorganisms varied significantly across different seasons and regions. From autumn through spring and into summer, the predominant microorganisms shifted from Firmicutes to Proteobacteria. Biomarker analysis revealed that Firmicutes (including the class bacilli and the genera Priestia and Bacillus) exhibited a higher relative abundance within the upstream group, where categories related to amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism were significantly enriched. Conversely, Proteobacteria (including several potential pathogens, such as Saezia, Pantoea, Lelliotia, and Aeromonas genera) showed an increased relative abundance within downstream groups, where disease-related categories exhibited significant enrichment. Our findings significantly enhance our understanding of how S. nukiangensis adapts to its environment, providing valuable data support for the conservation of S. nukiangensis and for ecological security assessment of the Nujiang River.

The fecal microbiota of the mouse-eared bat (Myotis velifer) with new records of microbial taxa for bats

Studies on the fecal microbiome of wild animals reveal valuable information on the feeding habits of the host and the possible roles of bacteria in digestion. In this work we characterized the fecal microbiota of seven male and seven female Myotis velifer bats using the V3-V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Fecal samples were collected at the El Salitre cave in Mexico. We obtained 81 amplicon sequence variants, identifying four phyla, 12 families and 14 genera for females and seven phyla, 21 families and 26 genera for males. The phylum Synergistota is reported for the first time in bats. The most abundant phyla were Pseudomonadota and Fusobacteriota. Male feces showed a greater taxonomic richness than those from females. This study revealed that the fecal microbiota of M. velifer had a unique and more diverse composition compared to the microbiota reported for other bats. We identified 24 families and two abundant genera Cetobacterium and Haematospirillum in both males and females. Cetobacterium may produce vitamin B12 that is not produced by animals and Haematospirillum, which has been reported as an emerging human pathogen, may produce non-volatile organic acids. These genera had not been previously reported in the bat microbiota.

Ideonella margarita sp. nov., Ideonella lacteola sp. nov., Pseudaquabacterium inlustre sp. nov. and Pseudaquabacterium rugosum sp. nov., isolated from streams in China and re-examining the taxonomic status of all the genera within the family Sphaerotilaceae

Four Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and motile strains (LYT19WT, DXS22WT, DXS29WT and BYS139WT) were isolated from streams in China. All four strains showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the species of genus Ideonella. The calculated average nucleotide identity, digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average amino acid identity values among strains LYT19WT, DXS22WT, DXS29WT, BYS139WT and other closely related strains were less than 79.5, 22.5 and 74.0%, respectively, indicating that each of the four strains should represent an independent novel species. The further reconstructed phylogenomic tree showed that strains LYT19WT and DXS29WT clustered closely with Ideonella strains, but strains DXS22WT and BYS139WT formed an independent clade with Aquabacterium terrae and Aquabacterium pictum. Comparing with other Aquabacterium species, A. terrae and A. pictum harboured distinct physiological and genetic characteristics, so it was reasonable to propose a novel genus Pseudaquabacterium to accommodate A. terrae, A. pictum, DXS22WT and BYS139WT. The major fatty acids of the four strains contained C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω6c and/or C16 : 1  ω7c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1  ω6c and/or C18 : 1  ω7c). The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and one unidentified aminophospholipid. Combining above descriptions, strains LYT19WT and DXS29WT should represent two novel species of the genus Ideonella, for which the names Ideonella margarita sp. nov. (type strain LYT19WT=GDMCC 1.3205T=KCTC 92545T) and Ideonella lacteola sp. nov. (type strain DXS29WT=GDMCC 1.3207T=KCTC 92547T) are proposed, respectively. Strains DXS22WT and BYS139WT should represent two novel species of the new genus Pseudaquabacterium, for which the names Pseudaquabacterium inlustre sp. nov. (type strain DXS22WT=GDMCC 1.3206T=KCTC 92546T) and Pseudaquabacterium rugosum sp. nov. (type strain BYS139WT=GDMCC 1.3208T=KCTC 92548T) are proposed, respectively.

Update on Accepted Novel Bacterial Isolates Derived from Human Clinical Specimens and Taxonomic Revisions Published in 2020 and 2021

A number of factors, including microbiome analyses and the increased utilization of whole-genome sequencing in the clinical microbiology laboratory, has contributed to the explosion of novel prokaryotic species discovery, as well as bacterial taxonomy revision. This review attempts to summarize such changes relative to human clinical specimens that occurred in 2020 and 2021, per primary publication in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology or acceptance on Validation Lists published by the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology. Of particular significance among valid and effectively published taxa within the past 2 years were novel Corynebacterium spp., coagulase-positive staphylococci, Pandoraea spp., and members of family Yersiniaceae. Noteworthy taxonomic revisions include those within the Bacillus and Lactobacillus genera, family Staphylococcaceae (including unifications of subspecies designations to species level taxa), Elizabethkingia spp., and former members of Clostridium spp. and Bacteroides spp. Revisions within the Brucella genus have the potential to cause deleterious effects unless the relevance of such changes is properly communicated by microbiologists to stakeholders in clinical practice, infection prevention, and public health.
