Transfer Learning to Detect COVID-19 Automatically from X-Ray Images Using Convolutional Neural Networks

A Comprehensive Analysis of Deep Learning-Based Approaches for Prediction and Prognosis of Infectious Diseases

Artificial intelligence is the most powerful and promising tool for the present analytic technologies. It can provide real-time insights into disease spread and predict new pandemic epicenters by processing massive amount of data. The main aim of the paper is to detect and classify multiple infectious diseases using deep learning models. The work is conducted by using 29,252 images of COVID-19, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, Pneumonia, normal, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, tuberculosis, viral pneumonia, and lung opacity which has been collected from various disease datasets. These datasets are used to train the deep learning models such as EfficientNetB0, EfficientNetB1, EfficientNetB2, EfficientNetB3, NASNetLarge, DenseNet169, ResNet152V2, and InceptionResNetV2. The images have been initially graphically represented using exploratory data analysis to study the pixel intensity and find anomalies by extracting the color channels in an RGB histogram. Later, the dataset has been pre-processed to remove noisy signals using image augmentation and contrast enhancement techniques. Further, feature extraction techniques such as morphological values of contour features and Otsu thresholding have been applied to extract the feature. The models have been evaluated on the basis of various parameters, and it has been discovered that during the testing phase, the InceptionResNetV2 model generated the highest accuracy of 88%, best loss value of 0.399, and root mean square error of 0.63.

Federated learning based Covid-19 detection

The world is affected by COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Tests are necessary for everyone as the number of COVID-19 affected individual's increases. So, the authors developed a basic sequential CNN model based on deep and federated learning that focuses on user data security while simultaneously enhancing test accuracy. The proposed model helps users detect COVID-19 in a few seconds by uploading a single chest X-ray image. A deep learning-aided architecture that can handle client and server sides efficiently has been proposed in this work. The front-end part has been developed using StreamLit, and the back-end uses a Flower framework. The proposed model has achieved a global accuracy of 99.59% after being trained for three federated communication rounds. The detailed analysis of this paper provides the robustness of this work. In addition, the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) will improve the ease of access to the aforementioned health services. IoMT tools and services are rapidly changing healthcare operations for the better. Hopefully, it will continue to do so in this difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic and will help to push the envelope of this work to a different extent.

A novel deep learning based method for COVID-19 detection from CT image

The novel Coronavirus named COVID-19 that World Health Organization (WHO) announced as a pandemic rapidly spread worldwide. Fast diagnosis of the virus infection is critical to prevent further spread of the virus, help identify the infected population, and cure the patients. Due to the increasing rate of infection and the limitations of the diagnosis kit, auxiliary detection tools are needed. Recent studies show that a deep learning model that comes up with the salient information of CT images can aid in the COVID-19 diagnosis. This study proposes a novel deep learning structure that the pooling layer of this model is a combination of pooling and the Squeeze Excitation Block (SE-block) layer. The proposed model uses Batch Normalization and Mish Function to optimize convergence time and performance of COVID-19 diagnosis. A dataset of two public hospitals was used to evaluate the proposed model. Moreover, it was compared to some different popular deep neural networks (DNN). The results expressed an accuracy of 99.03 with a recognition time of test mode of 0.069 ms in graphics processing unit (GPU). Furthermore, the best network results in classification metrics parameters and real-time applications belong to the proposed model.

Automatic detection of COVID-19 from chest CT scan and chest X-Rays images using deep learning, transfer learning and stacking

One of the promising methods for early detection of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) among symptomatic patients is to analyze chest Computed Tomography (CT) scans or chest x-rays images of individuals using Deep Learning (DL) techniques. This paper proposes a novel stacked ensemble to detect COVID-19 either from chest CT scans or chest x-ray images of an individual. The proposed model is a stacked ensemble of heterogenous pre-trained computer vision models. Four pre-trained DL models were considered: Visual Geometry Group (VGG 19), Residual Network (ResNet 101), Densely Connected Convolutional Networks (DenseNet 169) and Wide Residual Network (WideResNet 50 2). From each pre-trained model, the potential candidates for base classifiers were obtained by varying the number of additional fully-connected layers. After an exhaustive search, three best-performing diverse models were selected to design a weighted average-based heterogeneous stacked ensemble. Five different chest CT scans and chest x-ray images were used to train and evaluate the proposed model. The performance of the proposed model was compared with two other ensemble models, baseline pre-trained computer vision models and existing models for COVID-19 detection. The proposed model achieved uniformly good performance on five different datasets, consisting of chest CT scans and chest x-rays images. In relevance to COVID-19, as the recall is more important than precision, the trade-offs between recall and precision at different thresholds were explored. Recommended threshold values which yielded a high recall and accuracy were obtained for each dataset.

Artificial intelligence (AI) for medical imaging to combat coronavirus disease (COVID-19): a detailed review with direction for future research

Since early 2020, the whole world has been facing the deadly and highly contagious disease named coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the World Health Organization declared the pandemic on 11 March 2020. Over 23 million positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported till late August 2020. Medical images such as chest X-rays and Computed Tomography scans are becoming one of the main leading clinical diagnosis tools in fighting against COVID-19, underpinned by Artificial Intelligence based techniques, resulting in rapid decision-making in saving lives. This article provides an extensive review of AI-based methods to assist medical practitioners with comprehensive knowledge of the efficient AI-based methods for efficient COVID-19 diagnosis. Nearly all the reported methods so far along with their pros and cons as well as recommendations for improvements are discussed, including image acquisition, segmentation, classification, and follow-up diagnosis phases developed between 2019 and 2020. AI and machine learning technologies have boosted the accuracy of Covid-19 diagnosis, and most of the widely used deep learning methods have been implemented and worked well with a small amount of data for COVID-19 diagnosis. This review presents a detailed mythological analysis for the evaluation of AI-based methods used in the process of detecting COVID-19 from medical images. However, due to the quick outbreak of Covid-19, there are not many ground-truth datasets available for the communities. It is necessary to combine clinical experts' observations and information from images to have a reliable and efficient COVID-19 diagnosis. This paper suggests that future research may focus on multi-modality based models as well as how to select the best model architecture where AI can introduce more intelligence to medical systems to capture the characteristics of diseases by learning from multi-modality data to obtain reliable results for COVID-19 diagnosis for timely treatment .
