Nanoscale ordering of planar octupolar molecules for nonlinear optics at higher temperatures

We develop scenarios for orientational ordering of an in-plane system of small flat octupolar molecules at the low-concentration limit, aiming towards nonlinear-optical (NLO) applications at room temperatures. The octupoles interact with external electric poling fields and intermolecular interactions are neglected. Simple statistical-mechanics models are used to analyze the orientational order in the very weak poling limit, sufficient for retrieving the NLO signals owing to the high sensitivity of NLO detectors and measurement chains. Two scenarios are discussed. Firstly, the octupolar poling field is imparted by a system of point charges; the setup is subject to cell-related constraints imposed by mechanical strength and dielectric breakdown limit. The very weak octupolar order of benchmarking TATB molecules is shown to emerge at Helium temperatures. The second scenario addresses the dipoling of octupolar molecules with a small admixture of electric dipolar component. It requires a strong field regime to become effective at Nitrogen temperature range. An estimation of the nonlinear susceptibility coefficient matrix for both scenarios is done in the high-temperature (weak interaction) limit formalism. We argue that moderate modifications of the system like, e.g., an increase of the size of the octupole, accompanied by dipole-assisted octupoling, can increase the poling temperature above Nitrogen temperatures.

Interplay between Oxo and Fluoro in Vanadium Oxyfluorides for Centrosymmetric and Non-Centrosymmetric Structure Formation

Herein, we report the syntheses of two lithium-vanadium oxide-fluoride compounds crystallized from the same reaction mixture through a time variation experiment. A low temperature hydrothermal route employing a viscous paste of V₂O₅, oxalic acid, LiF, and HF allowed the crystallization of one metastable phase initially, Li₂VO_0.55(H₂O)_0.45F₅⋅2H₂O (I), which on prolonged heating transforms to a chemically similar yet structurally different phase, Li₃VOF₅ (II). Compound I crystallizes in centrosymmetric space group, I2/a with a = 6.052(3), b = 7.928(4), c = 12.461(6) Å, and β = 103.99(2)°, while compound II crystallizes in a non-centrosymmetric (NCS) space group, Pna2₁ with a = 5.1173(2), b = 8.612(3), c = 9.346(3) Å. Synthesis of NCS crystals are highly sought after in solid-state chemistry for their second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response and compound II exhibits SHG activity albeit non-phase-matchable. In this article, we also describe their magnetic properties which helped in unambiguous assignment of mixed valency of V (+4/+5) for Li₂VO_0.55(H₂O)_0.45F₅⋅2H₂O (I) and +4 valency of V for Li₃VOF₅ (II).

Solid-State Nonlinear Optical Properties of Mononuclear Copper(II) Complexes with Chiral Tridentate and Tetradentate Schiff Base Ligands

Salen-type metal complexes have been actively studied for their nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, and push-pull compounds with charge asymmetry generated by electron releasing and withdrawing groups have shown promising results. As a continuation of our research in this field and aiming at solid-state features, herein we report on the synthesis of mononuclear copper(II) derivatives bearing either tridentate N₂O Schiff bases L^(a−c)− and pyridine as the forth ancillary ligand, [Cu(L^a−c)(py)](ClO₄) (1a–c), or unsymmetrically-substituted push-pull tetradentate N₂O₂ Schiff base ligands, [Cu(5-A-5′-D-saldpen/chxn)] (2a–c), both derived from 5-substituted salicylaldehydes (sal) and the diamines (1R,2R)-1,2-diphenylethanediamine (dpen) and (1S,2S)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (chxn). All compounds were characterized through elemental analysis, infrared and UV/visible spectroscopies, and mass spectrometry in order to guarantee their purity and assess their charge transfer properties. The structures of 1a–c were determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The geometries of cations of 1a–c and of molecules 2a–c were optimized through DFT calculations. The solid-state NLO behavior was measured by the Kurtz–Perry powder technique @1.907 µm. All chiral derivatives possess non-zero quadratic electric susceptibility (χ⁽²⁾) and an efficiency of about 0.15–0.45 times that of standard urea.

Crystal structure of L-histidinium 2-nitrobenzoate

A new nonlinear optical organic compound, namely, L-histidinium 2-nitrobenzoate (abbreviated as LH2NB (I); ([C₆H₁₀N₃O₂]⁺ [C₇H₄NO₄]⁻)), was synthesized. The molecular structure of LH2NB (I) was elucidated using single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of this compound is about two times that of the standard potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals.
