Dielectric relaxation of a reentrant nematic-liquid-crystal mixture by time-domain reflectometry

Structure and dynamics of reentrant nematics: any open questions after almost 40 years?

Liquid crystals have attracted enormous interest because of the variety of their phases and richness of their application. The interplay of general physical symmetries and specific molecular features generates a myriad of different phenomena. A surprising behavior of liquid crystals is the reentrancy of phases as temperature, pressure, or concentration are varied. Here, we review the main experimental facts and the different theoretical scenarios that have guided the understanding of bulk reentrant nematics. Recently, some computer simulations of a system confined to nanoscopic scales have found new dynamical features of the reentrant nematic phase. We discuss this prediction in relation with the available experimental evidence on reentrant nematics and with the dynamics of liquids in strongly confined environments.

Liquid crystalline phase in ethanol suspension of anisometric 4-cyano-4-n-hexylbiphenyl microcrystals: Witnessed by dielectric spectroscopy

The suspensions of 4-cyano-4-n-hexylbiphenyl (6CB) anisometric microcrystal were obtained by quenching homogeneous 6CB/ethanol mixtures with different 6CB concentrations. Such suspensions were strongly suggested from the differential scanning calorimetry examinations and the image observations of the samples during the quench and heating processes. The crystallization process for the mixtures with higher 6CB concentration looked like the isotropic-nematic phase transition of bulk liquid crystal. Dielectric measurement was carried out on the mixtures during the heating process after quench. Distinct dielectric relaxation was observed in the frequency range between kHz and 100 kHz, which exhibited obvious dependence on temperature and 6CB concentration. Curve fitting on the complex conductivity spectra indicates that three Debye type relaxations exist in this narrow frequency range. Based on the dependences of relaxation parameters on temperature and 6CB concentration, the possible relaxation mechanisms and the phase conformation of the mixtures were discussed. It was concluded that the relaxations, from high to low relaxation frequency, originate from the Maxwell-Wagner polarization, the rotation of 6CB microcrystal around its long axis, and the reorientation of 6CB microcrystal around its short axis, respectively. It was also confirmed that the quenched 6CB/ethanol mixtures show isotropic-nematic phase transition with the increase of 6CB concentration.

Re-entrant nematic behavior in the 7OCB+9OCB mixtures: evidence for multiple nematic-smectic tricritical points

The metastable phase diagram of the two-component system heptyloxycyanobiphenyl (7OCB)+nonyloxycyanobiphenyl (9OCB) was determined by means of modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) and optical microscopy measurements. It was experimentally established that the 7OCB+9OCB two-component system exhibits a monotropic re-entrant nematic behavior. A complete quantitative thermodynamic analysis, through Oonk's equal G analysis, was performed, allowing for the calculation of the monotropic re-entrant behavior and the prediction of two tricritical points, one of them experimentally accessible for the SmAd-to-N transition and the other non-experimentally accessible for the RN-to-SmAd transition. From specific-heat measurements, latent heats were obtained for those mixtures displaying a first-order SmAd-to-N transition. Additionally, for some mixtures, the specific-heat critical exponents (alpha), through the second-order SmAd-to-N transition, were obtained. Both batches of data enable us to access to the experimental tricritical temperature for the SmAd-to-N transition.

Role of Aerosil Dispersion on the Activated Kinetics of the LC1-xSilx System

This study explores the role of aerosil dispersion on activated phase transitions of bulk octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) liquid crystals by performing heating rate-dependent experiments. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used at various heating ramp rates in order to probe the activated phase dynamics of the system. The system, LC1-xSilx, was prepared by mixing aerosil nanoparticles (7 nm in diameter) in the bulk 8CB by the solvent dispersion method (SDM). LC represents bulk 8CB, and Sil represents aerosil nanoparticles with concentration x in percent. The concentration of the aerosil nanoparticles (x) varied from 0 to 0.2 g/cm3 in the bulk 8CB. Well-defined, endothermic peaks were found on a heating scan at melting and at the smectic-A to nematic (SmA-N) and nematic to isotropic (N-I) transitions. These peaks show a temperature shift and a change in their shapes and sizes in the presence of aerosil nanoparticles. In addition, an exothermic peak also appeared before the melting peak during the heating scan in the presence of aerosil nanoparticles. All transitions shifted significantly with different heating ramp rates, following an Arrhenius behavior, showing activated kinetics. The presence of aerosil nanoparticles caused a significant increase in the enthalpy and a decrease in the activation energy compared to the results found in bulk 8CB. This behavior can be explained by aerosil dispersion in the LC1-xSilx, inducing a disorder in the bulk 8CB. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy shows a shift to higher frequency for the broad peak at 1082 cm-1, corresponding to an Si-O bond as the density of the aerosil increases, and can be explained in terms of surface and molecular interactions between aerosil nanoparticles and 8CB liquid crystal molecules.

Thermodynamics of Activated Phase Transitions of 8CB: DSC and MC Calorimetry

The present paper reports the heating rate effect on the phase transitions of a pure liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) with use of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Modulation Calorimetry (MC) techniques. The DSC runs were taken at various temperature ramp rates from 20 to 0.5 K/min for heating and cooling scans. Well-defined endothermic/exothermic peaks were found at the melting/crystallization, smectic-A to nematic (SmA-N), and nematic to isotropic (N-I) transitions on heating/cooling scans, respectively. All transitions shift in temperature significantly with different ramp rates. The temperature shift of C(p) peaks between heating and cooling scans indicates the order of the transitions. In addition, all transitions follow an Arrhenius behavior. The activation energy of a transition increases as the total energy involved in the transition decreases. The respective enthalpy and entropy change of each transition provides information on the Gibbs free energy. The significance of the results is discussed in terms of the order of transitions. A comparative analysis of MC and DSC techniques highlights the significance of the two techniques. MC is a practicable tool for observing the phase dynamics whereas DSC is a good tool for studying the rate kinematics of the transitions.

Dielectric spectroscopy of a binary mixture of liquid crystals showing wide temperature range twisted grain boundary phase with re-entrant cholesteric phase

There are only few materials, which have shown long temperature range twisted grain boundary (TGB) phases. One such material is the chiral binary mixture of 7OCB and 5* CBB (mole ratio 0.8 and 0.2) which shows unique phase sequence of cholesteric ( N*) , a wide temperature range TGBA (approximately 31 degrees C) and reentrant cholesteric (N*re) phases. In the present work we are reporting the dielectric spectroscopy of the above mixture with a chiral analog of earlier reported nematic (N) , smectic- A (SmA) , and reentrant nematic (Nre) phase sequences [Phys. Rev. A 46, 7733 (1992)] for different conditions of molecular orientations. Two modes of dielectric relaxations have been detected in a homeotropically aligned sample with unusually low relaxation frequencies for one of them. Planar oriented molecules in the TGBA phase show a soft mode of relaxation and support the recently proposed theory for the soft mode relaxation of the TGBA phase [Phys. Rev. E 65, 11701 (2001)]. By applying the dc electric field on planar oriented molecules in the TGBA phase, it has been possible to obtain a helix free homeotropically aligned TGBA phase.

Shear viscosity of nematic liquid crystals in the vicinity of the smectic-A phase in alkyloxycyanobiphenyl mixtures

The paper presents a singular temperature behavior of the shear viscosity measured for freely flowing nematic liquid crystals in vicinity to smectic-A phase in n-octyloxycyanobiphenyl and n-hexyloxycyanobiphenyl mixtures--a system exhibiting the reentrant nematic phase.
