Nonlinear transverse modes of large-aspect-ratio homogeneously broadened lasers: I. Analysis and numerical simulation

State dependent pseudoresonances and excess noise

We show that strong response to nonresonant modulations and excess noise are state dependent in generic nonlinear systems; i.e., they affect some output states but are absent from others. This is demonstrated in complex Swift-Hohenberg models relevant to optics, where it is caused by the non-normality of the linearized stability operators around selected output states, even though the cavity modes are orthogonal. In particular, we find the effective parameters that control excess noise and the response to modulations and show cases where these phenomena are enhanced by an order of magnitude.

Signal amplification and control in optical cavities with off-axis feedback

We consider a large class of optical cavities and gain media with an off-axis external feedback which introduces a two-point nonlocality. This nonlocality moves the lasing threshold and opens large windows of control parameters where weak light spots can be strongly amplified while the background radiation remains very low. Furthermore, transverse phase and group velocities of a signal can be independently tuned and this enables us to steer it nonmechanically, to control its spatial chirping, and to split it into two counterpropagating ones.

Time-resolved dynamics of two-dimensional transverse patterns in broad area lasers

We report the first direct experimental observation of the fast dynamics (nanosecond scale) of complex two-dimensional transverse patterns in broad area lasers. The laser emission bright peaks forming the transverse patterns are observed to be aperiodically flashing in time with different growing rates. These optical filaments do not move along the cross section during their lifetime, which is close to 2 ns. The experimental observations have also been reproduced by numerical integration of the Maxwell-Bloch equations.

Eigenmodes and symmetry selection mechanisms in circular large-aperture vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

The characteristics of the spatial eigenmodes of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with a large circular aperture are considered close to the lasing threshold. Experiments yield patterns based on rotational symmetry ("flowerlike" patterns) or on Cartesian symmetry (stripelike patterns) for very close operating conditions. The former are compatible with the boundary conditions whereas the latter are expected in infinite devices. Theoretically, the problem is considered in the framework of an eigenmode analysis of a linear partial differential equation for the optical field valid at threshold. This formulation allows for a simple implementation of asymmetries due to the reflection properties of Bragg mirrors as well as of transverse variations of gain and refractive index due to the device structure or due to imperfections in the growth process. A sharp transition between flowerlike modes and stripelike modes is shown to occur, if the device aperture is increased.

From nearly tilted waves to cavity phase solitons in broad area lasers with squeezed vacuum

Phase domains and phase solitons in two-level amplifying media damped by a squeezed vacuum are predicted for the first time. Two different types of pattern formation are found depending on the relative value of the cavity detuning to the squeezed parameter: the usual one in lasers via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation and a new one via pitchfork bifurcation.

Cavity solitons in two-level lasers with dense amplifying medium

Local-field effects are known to induce bistability in dense optical media. We examine theoretically whether this property is preserved in broad-area cavities, and show that bistability between the homogeneous lasing and nonlasing states of the system persists provided a Fourier filtering technique is used to prevent off-axis emission. The resulting bistability gives rise to spatial light localization in the form of cavity solitons, which exhibit a particularly large degree of plasticity as a function of the characteristics of the addressing beam. This is the simplest laser able to sustain cavity solitons.

Computationally determined existence and stability of transverse structures. I. Periodic optical patterns

We present a Fourier-transform based, computer-assisted, technique to find the stationary solutions of a model describing a saturable absorber in a driven optical cavity. We illustrate the method by finding essentially exact hexagonal and roll solutions as a function of wave number and of the input pump. The method, which is widely applicable, also allows the determination of the domain of stability (Busse balloon) of the pattern, and sheds light on the mechanisms responsible for any instability. To show the usefulness of our numerical technique, we describe cracking and shrinking patches of patterns in a particular region of parameter space.

Two-dimensional clusters of solitary structures in driven optical cavities

Using analytical and numerical approaches we study clusters of the two-dimensional localized structures of light excited in the externally driven optical cavities. Stability and instability properties of clusters of two, three, and four structures are analyzed in detail. We develop a technique for calculation of the expression for the interaction potential through modified Bessel functions that has applicability going beyond the model under consideration. Qualitative differences between stability properties of triangular and square structures are found that emphasize the role of diagonal interactions in the latter.

Experimental evidence for detuning induced pattern selection in nonlinear optics

We give quantitative experimental evidence of the influence of cavity detuning in determining the pattern selection in a one-dimensional large Fresnel number optical oscillator. The issues of the selection of the transverse mode close to threshold and the value of the pump parameter at threshold are addressed. Competition between right and left traveling waves, resulting in a winner takes all dynamics, is also reported. Experimental results are in quantitative agreement with the theoretical predictions formulated for a broad class of systems comparable to the one here considered.

Time resolved pattern evolution in a large aperture laser

We have measured quasiinstantaneous transverse patterns in a broad aperture laser. Nonordered patterns yielding to boundary determined regular structures in progressive time-integrated recording are observed. The linear analysis and numerical integration of the full Maxwell-Bloch equations allow us to interpret the features of the experiment. We show that this system being far from threshold cannot be fully understood with a perturbative model.
