An Holistic Extension for Classical Logic via Quantum Fredkin Gate

An holistic extension for classical propositional logic is introduced in the framework of quantum computation with mixed states. The mentioned extension is obtained by applying the quantum Fredkin gate to non-factorizable bipartite states. In particular, an extended notion of classical contradiction is studied in this holistic framework.

Sources of Asymmetry and the Concept of Nonregularity of n-Dimensional Density Matrices

The information contained in an n-dimensional (nD) density matrix ρ is parametrized and interpreted in terms of its asymmetry properties through the introduction of a family of components of purity that are invariant with respect to arbitrary rotations of the nD Cartesian reference frame and that are composed of two categories of meaningful parameters of different physical nature: the indices of population asymmetry and the intrinsic coherences. It is found that the components of purity coincide, up to respective simple coefficients, with the intrinsic Stokes parameters, which are also introduced in this work, and that determine two complementary sources of purity, namely the population asymmetry and the correlation asymmetry, whose weighted square average equals the overall degree of purity of ρ. A discriminating decomposition of ρ as a convex sum of three density matrices, viz. the pure, the fully random (maximally mixed) and the discriminating component, is introduced, which allows for the definition of the degree of nonregularity of ρ as the distance from ρ to a density matrix of a system composed of a pure component and a set of 2D, 3D,… and nD maximally mixed components. The chiral properties of a state ρ are analyzed and characterized from its intimate link to the degree of correlation asymmetry. The results presented constitute a generalization to nD systems of those established and exploited for polarization density matrices in a series of previous works.

Holistic Type Extension for Classical Logic via Toffoli Quantum Gate

A holistic extension of classical propositional logic is introduced via Toffoli quantum gate. This extension is based on the framework of the so-called “quantum computation with mixed states”, where also irreversible transformations are taken into account. Formal aspects of this new logical system are detailed: in particular, the concepts of tautology and contradiction are investigated in this extension. These concepts turn out to receive substantial changes due to the non-separability of some quantum states; as an example, Werner states emerge as particular cases of “holistic” contradiction.

Maximal violation of Bell inequalities under local filtering

We investigate the behavior of the maximal violations of the CHSH inequality and Vèrtesi's inequality under the local filtering operations. An analytical method has been presented for general two-qubit systems to compute the maximal violation of the CHSH inequality and the lower bound of the maximal violation of Vértesi's inequality over the local filtering operations. We show by examples that there exist quantum states whose non-locality can be revealed after local filtering operation by the Vértesi's inequality instead of the CHSH inequality.

Ultrashort pulses characterization by quantum state tomography

We apply the method of quantum state tomography for the reconstruction of classical laser pulses. The scheme is based on linear inversion, has no need for iterative inversion algorithm or deconvolution, and accounts for partial coherence. The reconstruction protocol is successfully tested on amplitude and phase shaped femtosecond pulses.

Quantum Otto cycle efficiency on coupled qudits

Properties of the coupled particles with spin 3/2 (quartits) in a constant magnetic field, as a working substance in the quantum Otto cycle of the heat engine, are considered. It is shown that this system as a converter of heat energy in work (i) shows the efficiency 1 at the negative absolute temperatures of heat baths, (ii) at the temperatures of the opposite sign the efficiency approaches 1, (iii) at the positive temperatures of heat baths antiferromagnetic interaction raises efficiency threefold in comparison with uncoupled particles.

Complementarity and correlations

We provide an interpretation of entanglement based on classical correlations between measurement outcomes of complementary properties: States that have correlations beyond a certain threshold are entangled. The reverse is not true, however. We also show that, surprisingly, all separable nonclassical states exhibit smaller correlations for complementary observables than some strictly classical states. We use mutual information as a measure of classical correlations, but we conjecture that the first result holds also for other measures (e.g., the Pearson correlation coefficient or the sum of conditional probabilities).

Coherent manipulations of atoms using laser light

The internal structure of a particle - an atom or other quantum system in which the excitation energies are discrete - undergoes change when exposed to pulses of near-resonant laser light. This tutorial review presents basic concepts of quantum states, of laser radiation and of the Hilbert-space statevector that provides the theoretical portrait of probability amplitudes - the tools for quantifying quantum properties not only of individual atoms and molecules but also of artificial atoms and other quantum systems. It discusses the equations of motion that describe the laser-induced changes (coherent excitation), and gives examples of laser-pulse effects, with particular emphasis on two-state and three-state adiabatic time evolution within the rotating-wave approximation. It provides pictorial descriptions of excitation based on the Bloch equations that allow visualization of two-state excitation as motion of a three-dimensional vector (the Bloch vector). Other visualization techniques allow portrayal of more elaborate systems, particularly the Hilbert-space motion of adiabatic states subject to various pulse sequences. Various more general multilevel systems receive treatment that includes degeneracies, chains and loop linkages. The concluding sections discuss techniques for creating arbitrary pre-assigned quantum states, for manipulating them into alternative coherent superpositions and for analyzing an unknown superposition. Appendices review some basic mathematical concepts and provide further details of the theoretical formalism, including photons, pulse propagation, statistical averages, analytic solutions to the equations of motion, exact solutions of periodic Hamiltonians, and population-trapping "dark" states.
