Abstract
This review emphasizes the mass spectrometry research being performed at academic and established research institutions in India. It consists of three main parts covering the work done in organic, atomic and biological mass spectrometry. The review reveals that the use of mass spectrometry techniques started in the middle of the 20th century and was applied to research in the fields of organic, nuclear, geographical and atomic chemistry. Later, with the advent of soft and atmospheric ionization techniques it has been applied to pharmaceutical and biological research. In due course, several research centers with advanced mass spectrometry facilities have been established for specific areas of research such as gas-phase ion chemistry, ion-molecule reactions, proscribed chemicals, pesticide residues, pharmacokinetics, protein/peptide chemistry, nuclear chemistry, geochronological studies, archeology, petroleum industry, proteomics, lipidomics and metabolomics. Day-by-day the mass spectrometry centers/facilities in India have attracted young students for their doctoral research and other advanced research applications.

Abstract
We study the rotational wave packet created by nonadiabatic rotational excitation of molecules with strong femtosecond laser pulses. The applicable condition of the Delta-Kick method is obtained by comparing the laser intensity and pulse duration dependences of the wave packet calculated with different methods. The wave packet evolution is traced analytically with the Delta-Kick method. The calculations demonstrate that the rotational populations can be controlled for the rotational wave packet created by two femtosecond laser pulses. The evolution of the rotational wave packet with controlled populations produces interference patterns with exotic spatial symmetries. These calculations are validated by comparing the theoretical calculations with our experimental measurements for the rotational wave packet created by thermal ensemble CO(2) and two strong femtosecond laser pulses. Potential applications in molecular science are also discussed for the rotational wave packet with controlled populations and spatial symmetries.

Abstract
Alignment control of an ensemble of nonpolar molecules is numerically studied by means of optimal control simulation. A nitrogen molecule that is modeled by a quantum rigid rotor is adopted. Controlled rotational wave packets are created through nonresonant optical transitions induced by polarizability coupling. Optimal pulses are designed to achieve the alignment control at a specified time in the absence/presence of external static fields in zero- and finite-temperature cases, as well as to maintain an aligned state. When maintaining an aligned state over a specified time interval is chosen as a target, the control mechanism is primarily attributed to a dynamical one. Multiple optimal solutions that lead to virtually the same control achievement are found, which are consistent with the topology of the quantum control landscape.

Abstract
We show that a dramatic field-free molecular alignment can be achieved after exciting molecules with proper trains of strong ultrashort laser pulses. Optimal two- and three-pulse excitation schemes are defined, providing an efficient and robust molecular alignment. This opens new prospects for various applications requiring macroscopic ensembles of highly aligned molecules.

Abstract
Semiclassical catastrophes in the dynamics of a quantum rotor (molecule) driven by a strong time-varying field are considered. We show that for strong enough fields, a sharp peak in the rotor angular distribution can be achieved via a time-domain focusing phenomenon, followed by the formation of rainbowlike angular structures. A strategy leading to the enhanced angular squeezing is proposed that uses a specially designed sequence of pulses. The predicted effects can be observed in many processes, ranging from molecular alignment (orientation) by laser fields to heavy-ion collisions, and the trapping of cold atoms by a standing light wave.
