Abstract
In this work, we used, for the first time, a computational Self-Consistent Field procedure based on plane waves to describe the low and high spin conformational states of the complex [Fe(bpy)3]2+. The results obtained in the study of the minimum energy structures of this complex, a prototype of a wide class of compounds called Spin Cross Over, show how the plane wave calculations are in line with the most recent studies based on gaussian basis set functions and, above all, reproduce within acceptable errors the experimental spectra of X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES). This preliminary study shows the capabilities of plane wave methods to correctly describe the molecular structures of metal-organic complexes of this type and paves the way for future even complex computational simulations based on the energy gradient, such as Nudge Elastic Band or ab-initio Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics.

Abstract
Lithium intercalation compounds of alpha- and beta-perylene are investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy. Spectroscopic data together with a Born-Haber cycle provide information on the formation enthalpy of those materials. This approach allows understanding the amount of charge transferred from the alkali metal atoms to the pi system, and illuminates the role of molecular versus solid-state properties in the formation of the intercalation compounds. In the bulk of alpha-perylene material, molecular dimerization survives upon intercalation which reduces the Madelung energy of the intercalation compound but increases the electron-accepting capability of the organic system and facilitates the ionization of lithium atoms in the molecular solid environment. The lower ionization potential results in a larger charge transfer (about two electrons per molecule) in alpha-perylene compared to the monomeric system, beta-perylene.

Abstract
Metal organic contacts are at the basis of devices such as organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, we report a theoretical investigation of the chemical interaction between a Mg atom and an organic film made of tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq3) molecules. The latter is modeled either by an isolated molecule or by a bulk crystal. Using first-principles molecular dynamics for structural optimization, we find that an isolated Alq3 molecule and a Mg atom form an ion-pair. However, when the metal atom interacts with molecules in a bulk crystalline environment, we find that an organometallic complex is energetically preferred over the ion-pair. The complex formation is an effect of the environment which makes possible the interaction of the metal atom with several adjacent molecules. Here, our calculated O(1s) and N(1s) core level shifts agree well with recent experimental data on Alq3 films exposed to Mg. Our results resolve the apparent contradiction between experiment and predictions made in previous calculations in which a single Alq3 molecule was used to model a thin film.
