High-field cyclotron resonance and impurity transition in n-type and p-type 3C-SiC at magnetic fields up to 175 T

Time-domain terahertz spectroscopy in high magnetic fields

There are a variety of elementary and collective terahertz-frequency excitations in condensed matter whose magnetic field dependence contains significant insight into the states and dynamics of the electrons involved. Often, determining the frequency, temperature, and magnetic field dependence of the optical conductivity tensor, especially in high magnetic fields, can clarify the microscopic physics behind complex many-body behaviors of solids. While there are advanced terahertz spectroscopy techniques as well as high magnetic field generation techniques available, a combination of the two has only been realized relatively recently. Here, we review the current state of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) experiments in high magnetic fields. We start with an overview of time-domain terahertz detection schemes with a special focus on how they have been incorporated into optically accessible high-field magnets. Advantages and disadvantages of different types of magnets in performing THz-TDS experiments are also discussed. Finally, we highlight some of the new fascinating physical phenomena that have been revealed by THz-TDS in high magnetic fields.

SiC MATERIAL PROPERTIES

This chapter briefly summarizes device-relevant material properties of the wide bandgap semiconductor silicon carbide. The polytypes 4 H -, 6 H - and 3 C - SiC are predominantly considered. These SiC polytypes can reproducibly be grown as single crystals; they have superior electronic and thermal material properties. The conductivity type can be adjusted by shallow donors and acceptors. Special sections are related to the diffusion of dopants, to the impurity conduction, to the minority carrier lifetime and to the different types of traps generated at the interface of thermally grown SiC/SiO 2 structures.

Development of high-speed polarizing imaging system for operation in high pulsed magnetic field

A high-speed polarizing microscope system combined with a 37 T pulse magnet has been developed. This system was applied to successfully visualize the field-induced collapse of charge-orbital ordering in a layered manganite La(1/2)Sr(3/2)MnO(4). Quantitative analyses of the obtained polarizing microscope images provided clear evidence of this transition in contrast to rather moderate changes in magnetization and magnetoresistance. The ability of this system to carry out quantitative analysis was further tested through the observation of Faraday rotation in a Tb(3)Ga(5)O(12) crystal. The Verdet constant determined from the polarizing images is in reasonable agreement with that in literature. Local intensity analyses of the images indicate that we can investigate magneto-optical signals within an accuracy of 0.85% in an area of 9.6 x 9.6 microm(2).
