Spin Mode Switching at the Edge of a Quantum Hall System

Quantum Hall states can be characterized by their chiral edge modes. Upon softening the edge potential, the edge has long been known to undergo spontaneous reconstruction driven by charging effects. In this Letter we demonstrate a qualitatively distinct phenomenon driven by exchange effects, in which the ordering of the edge modes at ν=3 switches abruptly as the edge potential is made softer, while the ordering in the bulk remains intact. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is robust, and has many verifiable experimental signatures in transport.

Atypical fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene at filling factor 1/3

We study, with the help of exact-diagonalization calculations, a four-component trial wave function that may be relevant for the recently observed graphene fractional quantum Hall state at a filling factor ν(G) = 1/3. Although it is adiabatically connected to a 1/3 Laughlin state in the upper spin branch, with SU(2) valley-isospin ferromagnetic ordering and a completely filled lower spin branch, it reveals physical properties beyond such a state that is the natural ground state for a large Zeeman effect. Most saliently, it possesses at experimentally relevant values of the Zeeman gap low-energy spin-flip excitations that may be unveiled in inelastic light-scattering experiments.

Resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance in the quantum hall regime: possible evidence for a Skyrme crystal

Resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance measurements have been performed on a high mobility heterostructure in the quantum Hall regime. At millikelvin temperatures the nuclear resonances are observed in the vicinity of various integer and fractional filling factors without previous dynamic nuclear polarization. Near nu = 1, the observed large enhancement of the resonance amplitude accompanied by a reduction of T1 strongly suggests a greatly increased coupling between the electronic and nuclear spin systems. This is consistent with the proposed coupling of the nuclear spin system to the Goldstone mode of the Skyrme crystal.
