Model for the high-temperature oxygen-ordering thermodynamics in YBa2Cu3O6+x: Inclusion of electron spin and charge degrees of freedom

Nanodiamond Influence on the Nucleation and Growth of YBCO Superconducting Film Deposited by Metal-Organic Decomposition

It was recently shown that the introduction of nanodiamond (ND) into a superconducting metal-organic deposited YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) film produces an increase in critical current density in self-field conditions (B = 0 T). Such improvement appears to be due to the formation of denser and smoother films than the samples deposited without ND. This paper presents the work done to understand the role of ND during YBCO nucleation and growth. A detailed study on YBCO+ND films quenched at different temperatures of the crystallization process was carried out. Results showed that the reaction responsible for YBCO production appeared effectively affected by ND. In particular, ND stabilizes one of the YBCO precursors, BaF2(1-x)Ox, whose conversion into YBCO requires a prolonged time. Therefore, the YBCO nucleation is slowed down by ND and begins when the experimental conditions favor both thermodynamically and kinetically the formation of YBCO along the c-axis. This effect has important implications because the growth of a highly epitaxial c-axis YBCO film enables excellent superconducting performance.

Configurational electronic entropy and the phase diagram of mixed-valence oxides: the case of LixFePO4

We demonstrate that configurational electronic entropy, previously neglected, in ab initio thermodynamics of materials can qualitatively modify the finite-temperature phase stability of mixed-valence oxides. While transformations from low-T ordered or immiscible states are almost always driven by configurational disorder (i.e., random occupation of lattice sites by multiple species), in FePO4-LiFePO4 the formation of a solid solution is almost entirely driven by electronic rather than ionic configurational entropy. We argue that such an electronic entropic mechanism may be relevant to most other mixed-valence systems.

SOME CHEMICAL AND STRUCTURAL EFFECTS ON THE PROPERTIES OF HIGH-Tc SUPERCONDUCTORS

▪ Abstract  The history of superconductivity, including superconductivity in the high-Tc cuprates, is reviewed very briefly, and the differences between conventional superconductors and the high-Tc cuprates are summarized. The basic crystal structures of the major series of high-Tc cuprates are described and compared. The relation of structures to superconducting properties is reviewed with an emphasis on the orthorhombic-tetragonal transition in (La2−x Srx)CuO4; the corresponding transition, and also the transition to the low-temperature tetragonal phase in (La2−xBax)CuO4; and the effects of oxygen vacancies, oxygen-vacancy ordering, frozen-in disorder, and occupation of the off-chain O(5) sites in YBa2Cu3O7−δ. The effects of chemical substitutions of lanthanide elements on the La/Sr sites in (La2−xSrx)CuO4 and on the Y sites in YBa2Cu3O7−δ, and of 3d elements and sp elements on the Cu sites in both systems are reviewed. The difference between the effects of the lanthanide substitutions, particularly Pr, in the two systems are considered. Major properties of the Bi-, Tl-, and Hg-cuprates, are described briefly. A comparison of the high-Tc cuprates with noncuprate oxide superconductors is given.
