Spectrally resolved four-wave mixing in semiconductors: Influence of inhomogeneous broadening

How pump-probe differential reflectivity at negative delay yields the perturbed-free-induction-decay: theory of the experiment and its verification

We present a simple but mathematically complete first-principles theory for the pump-probe differential reflectivity experiment at negative delay (probe preceding the pump) to show how it gives information about the perturbed-free-induction-decay of coherent polarization. The calculation, involving the optical Bloch equations to describe the induced polarization and the Ewald-Oseen idea to calculate the reflected signal as a consequence of the free oscillations of perturbed dipoles, also explicitly includes the process of lock-in detection of a double-chopped signal after it has passed through a monochromator. The theory giving a closed form expression for the measured signal in both time and spectal domains is compared with experiments on high quality GaAs quantum well sample. The dephasing time inferred experimentally at 4 K compares remarkably well with the inverse of the absorption linewidth of the continuous-wave photoluminescence excitation spectrum. Spectrally-resolved signal at negative delay calculated from our theoretical expression nicely reproduces the coherent spectral oscillations observed in our experiments, although exact fitting of the experimental spectra with the theoretical expression is difficult on account of multiple resonances.

Diagonal slice four-wave mixing: natural separation of coherent broadening mechanisms

We present an ultrafast coherent spectroscopy data acquisition scheme that samples slices of the time domain used in multidimensional coherent spectroscopy to achieve faster data collection than full spectra. We derive analytical expressions for resonance lineshapes using this technique that completely separate homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening contributions into separate projected lineshapes for arbitrary inhomogeneous broadening. These lineshape expressions are also valid for slices taken from full multidimensional spectra and allow direct measurement of the parameters contributing to the lineshapes in those spectra as well as our own.

Linear optics, Raman scattering, and spin noise spectroscopy

Spin noise spectroscopy (SNS) is a new method for studying magnetic resonance and spin dynamics that has gained, in the last several years, a considerable popularity. The method is based on measuring magnetization noise of a paramagnet using the Faraday rotation technique. In strong contrast with methods of nonlinear optics, the spectroscopy of spin noise is considered to be essentially nonperturbative. At the same time, presently, it became clear that the SNS, as an optical technique, demonstrates abilities lying far beyond the bounds of conventional linear optics. Specifically, the SNS allows one to penetrate inside an inhomogeneously broadened absorption band and to determine its homogeneous width, to realize a sort of pump-probe spectroscopy without any optical nonlinearity, to probe a bulk inhomogeneous medium by focal point of a probe beam, etc. This may seem especially puzzling when taken into account that SNS can be considered just as a version of Raman spectroscopy, which is known to be deprived of such abilities. Understanding of these paradoxical features of SNS technique is required for the present-day applications of SNS and its further development. In this paper, we present a general analysis of this apparent inconsistency from the viewpoint of distinction between spectroscopy of the light intensity and of the light field and provide its resolution.

OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF SEMICONDUCTOR QUANTUM STRUCTURES CdTe/ZnSe: CONTRIBUTION OF CdTe QUANTUM DOTS

The optical properties of the semiconductor quantum structure CdTe / ZnSe are investigated using temperature-dependent photoluminescence and spectrally-resolved three-pulse two-color femtosecond photon echo measurements. The origin of the observed photoluminescence as luminescence from self-assembled quantum dots and the coexistence of two-dimensional and zero-dimensional structures are discussed in terms of the temperature-dependence of the photoluminescence, the wavelength dependence of the dephasing of excited carriers, and the homogeneous broadening of the energy levels.

Stimulated secondary emission from semiconductor microcavities

We find strong influence of final-state stimulation on the time-resolved light emission dynamics from semiconductor microcavities after pulsed excitation allowing angle-resonant polariton-polariton scattering on the lower-polariton branch. The polariton dynamics can be controlled by injection of final-state polaritons at densities below a polariton saturation density of 5x10(8) cm(-2). A bosonic enhancement factor in the dynamics of up to 700 is evaluated.
