Phase transitions in an interacting boson model with near-neighbor repulsion

Competing supersolid and Haldane insulator phases in the extended one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model

The Haldane insulator is a gapped phase characterized by an exotic nonlocal order parameter. The parameter regimes at which it might exist, and how it competes with alternate types of order, such as supersolid order, are still incompletely understood. Using the stochastic Green function quantum Monte Carlo algorithm and density matrix renormalization group, we study numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model with contact and near neighbor repulsive interactions. We show that, depending on the ratio of the near neighbor to contact interactions, this model exhibits charge density waves, superfluid, supersolid, and the recently identified Haldane insulating phases. We show that the Haldane insulating phase exists only at the tip of the unit-filling charge density wave lobe and that there is a stable supersolid phase over a very wide range of parameters.

Bose-Glass phases of ultracold atoms due to cavity backaction

We determine the quantum ground-state properties of ultracold bosonic atoms interacting with the mode of a high-finesse resonator. The atoms are confined by an external optical lattice, whose period is incommensurate with the cavity mode wavelength, and are driven by a transverse laser, which is resonant with the cavity mode. While for pointlike atoms photon scattering into the cavity is suppressed, for sufficiently strong lasers quantum fluctuations can support the buildup of an intracavity field, which in turn amplifies quantum fluctuations. The dynamics is described by a Bose-Hubbard model where the coefficients due to the cavity field depend on the atomic density at all lattice sites. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and mean-field calculations show that, for large parameter regions, cavity backaction forces the atoms into clusters with a checkerboard density distribution. Here, the ground state lacks superfluidity and possesses finite compressibility, typical of a Bose glass. This system constitutes a novel setting where quantum fluctuations give rise to effects usually associated with disorder.

Cold atoms and molecules in self-assembled dipolar lattices

We study the realization of lattice models, where cold atoms and molecules move as extra particles in a dipolar crystal of trapped polar molecules. The crystal is a self-assembled floating mesoscopic lattice structure with quantum dynamics given by phonons. We show that within an experimentally accessible parameter regime extended Hubbard models with tunable long-range phonon-mediated interactions describe the effective dynamics of dressed particles.

Supersolid phases in the one-dimensional extended soft-core bosonic Hubbard model

We present results of quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the soft-core extended bosonic Hubbard model in one dimension exhibiting the presence of supersolid phases similar to those recently found in two dimensions. We find that in one and two dimensions, the insulator-supersolid transition has dynamic critical exponent z = 2 whereas the first order insulator-superfluid transition in two dimensions is replaced by a continuous transition with z = 1 in one dimension. We present evidence that this transition is in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class and discuss the mechanism behind this difference. The simultaneous presence of two types of quasi-long-range order results in two solitonlike dips in the excitation spectrum.
