Fabrication of on-chip probes for double-tip scanning tunneling microscopy

A reduction of the interprobe distance in multiprobe and double-tip scanning tunneling microscopy to the nanometer scale has been a longstanding and technically difficult challenge. Recent multiprobe systems have allowed for significant progress by achieving distances of ~30 nm using two individually driven, traditional metal wire tips. For situations where simple alignment and fixed separation can be advantageous, we present the fabrication of on-chip double-tip devices that incorporate two mechanically fixed gold tips with a tip separation of only 35 nm. We utilize the excellent mechanical, insulating and dielectric properties of high-quality SiN as a base material to realize easy-to-implement, lithographically defined and mechanically stable tips. With their large contact pads and adjustable footprint, these novel tips can be easily integrated with most existing commercial combined STM/AFM systems.

Nanofabricated tips for device-based scanning tunneling microscopy

We report on the fabrication and performance of a new kind of tip for scanning tunneling microscopy. By fully incorporating a metallic tip on a silicon chip using modern micromachining and nanofabrication techniques, we realize so-called smart tips and show the possibility of device-based STM tips. Contrary to conventional etched metal wire tips, these can be integrated into lithographically defined electrical circuits. We describe a new fabrication method to create a defined apex on a silicon chip and experimentally demonstrate the high performance of the smart tips, both in stability and resolution. In situ tip preparation methods are possible and we verify that they can resolve the herringbone reconstruction and Friedel oscillations on Au(111) surfaces. We further present an overview of possible applications.

Electronic transport in planar atomic-scale structures measured by two-probe scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Miniaturization of electronic circuits into the single-atom level requires novel approaches to characterize transport properties. Due to its unrivaled precision, scanning probe microscopy is regarded as the method of choice for local characterization of atoms and single molecules supported on surfaces. Here we investigate electronic transport along the anisotropic germanium (001) surface with the use of two-probe scanning tunneling spectroscopy and first-principles transport calculations. We introduce a method for the determination of the transconductance in our two-probe experimental setup and demonstrate how it captures energy-resolved information about electronic transport through the unoccupied surface states. The sequential opening of two transport channels within the quasi-one-dimensional Ge dimer rows in the surface gives rise to two distinct resonances in the transconductance spectroscopic signal, consistent with phase-coherence lengths of up to 50 nm and anisotropic electron propagation. Our work paves the way for the electronic transport characterization of quantum circuits engineered on surfaces.

Measuring electronic transport at the atomic scale requires atom precise contacts. Here, the authors demonstrate quasi-one-dimensional electronic transport along a single dimer row on a germanium surface using a two probe scanning tunneling microscopy protocol.

Thermoelectric Effects of Nanogaps between Two Tips

This study designs a microscaled thermoelectric component featuring a nanogap of varying size (133-900 nm) between the tips of the component. Electricity and heat are transmitted between the gap of the tips through the thermionic emission of electrons. Because the gaps exhibit a discontinuous structure, the phonon's contribution to thermal conductivity can be virtually neglected, thereby enhancing the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of the designed thermoelectric component. The experimental results reveal that a narrow tip gap generates stronger thermoelectric effects, with Seebeck voltage and Seebeck coefficient being respectively, one and two orders of magnitude greater than those of the thermoelectric effects of nanowires. The thermoelectric figure of merit without considering the contributions from other heat carriers is higher than the value of thermoelectric devices developed in recent years. For a set of asymmetrical thin film electrodes of differing sizes, the thermoelectric effects generated in the heating process of large thin films are stronger than those of small thin films. Furthermore, adding nanoparticles to the nanogap facilitate the thermionic emission of electrons, in which electrons hop from the hot end to the cold end, thereby intensifying the thermoelectric effects of the nanogap.

Nanotube nanotweezers

Nanoscale electromechanical systems-nanotweezers-based on carbon nanotubes have been developed for manipulation and interrogation of nanostructures. Electrically conducting and mechanically robust carbon nanotubes were attached to independent electrodes fabricated on pulled glass micropipettes. Voltages applied to the electrodes closed and opened the free ends of the nanotubes, and this electromechanical response was simulated quantitatively using known nanotweezer structure and nanotube properties. The mechanical capabilities of the nanotweezers were demonstrated by grabbing and manipulating submicron clusters and nanowires. The conducting nanotube arms of the tweezers were also used for measuring the electrical properties of silicon carbide nanoclusters and gallium arsenide nanowires.
