Static and dynamic behavior of magnetic particles at fluid interfaces

This perspective work reviews the current status of research on magnetic particles at fluid interfaces. The article gives both a unified overview of recent experimental advances and theoretical studies centered on very different phenomena that share a common characteristic: they involve adsorbed magnetic particles that range in size from a few nanometers to several millimeters. Because of their capability of being remotely piloted through controllable external fields, magnetic particles have proven essential as building blocks in the design of new techniques, smart materials and micromachines, with new tunable properties and prospective applications in engineering and biotechnology. Once adsorbed at a fluid-fluid interfase, in a process that can be facilitated via the application of magnetic field gradients, these particles often result sorely confined to two dimensions (2D). In this configuration, inter-particle forces directed along the perpendicular to the interface are typically very small compared to the surface forces. Hence, the confinement and symmetry breaking introduced by the presence of the surface play an important role on the response of the system to the application of an external field. In monolayers of particles where the magnetic is predominant interaction, the states reached are strongly determined by the mode and orientation of the applied field, which promote different patterns and processes. Furthermore, they can reproduce some of the dynamic assemblies displayed in bulk or form new ones, that take advantage of the interfacial phenomena or of the symmetry breaking introduce by the confining boundary. Magnetic colloids are also widely used for unraveling the guiding principles of 2D dynamic self-assembly, in designs devised for producing interface transport, as tiny probes for assessing interfacial rheological properties, neglecting the bulk and inertia contributions, as well as actuated stabilizing agents in foams and emulsions.

Crystallization of hard disks induced by a temperature gradient

While uniform temperature has no effect on equilibrium properties of hard-core systems, its gradient might substantially change their behavior. In particular, in hard-disk system subject to temperature difference ΔT disks are repelled from the hot boundary of the system and accumulate at the cold one. Using event-driven molecular dynamics simulations we show that for sufficiently large ΔT or coverage ratio ρ∗, crystal forms at the cold boundary. In this spatially inhomogeneous system a significant decrease of diffusivity of disks clearly marks the stationary interface between liquid and crystal. Such a behavior is also supported through calculation of the radial distribution function and the bond order parameter. Simulations show that for this nonequilibrium system the equipartition of energy holds and velocity obeys the Boltzmann distribution.

Crystallization in three- and two-dimensional colloidal suspensions

Despite progress in the understanding of crystal nucleation and crystal growth since the first theories for nucleation were developed, an exact quantitative prediction of the nucleation rates in most systems has remained an unsolved problem. Colloidal suspensions show a phase behavior that is analogous to atomic or molecular systems and serve accordingly as ideal model systems for studying crystal nucleation with an accuracy and depth on a microscopic scale that is hard to reach for atomic or molecular systems. Due to the mesoscopic size of colloidal particles they can be studied in detail on the single-particle level and their dynamics is strongly slowed down in comparison with atomic or molecular systems, such that the formation of a crystal nucleus can be followed in detail. In this review, recent progress in the study of homogeneous and heterogeneous crystal nucleation in colloids and the controlled growth of crystalline colloidal structures is reviewed. All this work has resulted in unprecedented insights into the early stage of nucleation and it is also relevant for a deeper understanding of soft matter materials in general as well as for possible applications based on colloidal suspensions.

Energy and symmetry of self-assembled two-dimensional dipole clusters in magnetic confinement

We report on confined two-dimensional (2D) dipole clusters formed by small ferromagnetic particles floating at the liquid-air interface and confined by nonuniform external magnetic field. The particles self assemble into hexagonally ordered clusters whose lattice constant can be magnetically tuned. We study the area S, the energy E, the chemical potential mu and the lattice constant a, of 2D clusters as functions of particle number N for N<130. We develop a continuum approximation which accounts fairly well for the smooth part of mu(N), S(N), and a(N) dependences. In addition to these dependences, we observe quasiperiodic fluctuations with dips at "magic" numbers corresponding to particularly symmetric particle configurations. We demonstrate that these fluctuations are related to the cluster symmetry and to the cluster center of mass position.
