Charged pseudospin textures in double-layer quantum Hall systems: Bimerons and meron crystals

SU(4) Skyrmions in the ν=±1 Quantum Hall State of Graphene

We explore different Skyrmion types in the lowest Landau level of graphene at a filling factor ν=±1. In addition to the formation of spin and valley pseudospin Skyrmions, we show that another type of spin-valley entangled Skyrmions can be stabilized in graphene due to an approximate SU(4) spin-valley symmetry that is affected by sublattice symmetry-breaking terms. These Skyrmions have a clear signature in spin-resolved density measurements on the lattice scale, and we discuss the expected patterns for the different Skyrmion types.

Theory of activated transport in bilayer quantum Hall systems

We analyze the transport properties of bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor nu=1 in drag geometries as a function of interlayer bias, in the limit where the disorder is sufficiently strong to unbind meron-antimeron pairs, the charged topological defects of the system. We compute the typical energy barrier for these objects to cross incompressible regions within the disordered system using a Hartree-Fock approach, and show how this leads to multiple activation energies when the system is biased. We then demonstrate using a bosonic Chern-Simons theory that in drag geometries current in a single layer directly leads to forces on only two of the four types of merons, inducing dissipation only in the drive layer. Dissipation in the drag layer results from interactions among the merons, resulting in very different temperature dependences for the drag and drive layers, in qualitative agreement with experiment.

Pseudospin soliton in the nu=1 bilayer quantum Hall state

We investigate a domain structure of pseudospins, a soliton lattice in the bilayer quantum Hall state at total Landau level filling factor nu = 1, in a tilted magnetic field, where the pseudospin represents the layer degree of freedom. An anomalous peak in the magnetoresistance Rxx appears at the transition point between the commensurate and incommensurate phases. The Rxx at the peak is highly anisotropic for the angle between the in-plain magnetic field B parallel and the current, and indicates a formation of the soliton lattice aligned parallel to B parallel. The temperature dependence of the Rxx peak reveals that the dissipation is caused by thermal fluctuations of pseudospin solitons. We also study a phase diagram of the bilayer nu = 1 system, and the effects of density imbalance between the two layers.

Direct measurements of the spin and the cyclotron gaps in a 2D electron system in silicon

Using magnetocapacitance data in tilted magnetic fields, we directly determine the chemical potential jump in a strongly correlated two-dimensional electron system in silicon when the filling factor traverses the spin and the cyclotron gaps. The data yield an effective g factor that is close to its value in bulk silicon and does not depend on the filling factor. The cyclotron splitting corresponds to the effective mass that is strongly enhanced at low electron densities.
