Magnetic-field-induced multiple electronic states in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3+ delta

Peculiar magnetism in Eu substituted BiFeO3 and its correlation with local structure

We have systematically investigated the effects of Eu substitution on chemical pressure, bond lengths, microstrain, bond angles, octahedral tilting, vibrational modes and phase transformation, in BiFeO₃. Correlation between concentration, phase, local structure and magnetism has been explained. Substitution of Eu ions with contrasting magnetic moment and dissimilar size, affects the local structure by changing bond angles and hence modifies spin structure through weakening of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction which lead to destruction of spiral spin configuration. Intriguing as well as anomalous magnetic response such as weak ferromagnetism with high coercivity, stair step like loops with significant drop in coercivity and systematic decrease in the magnetic coercivity at low temperatures has been observed as a function of Eu concentration (x). These results are explained on the basis of weakening of DM interaction, field induced melting of antiferromagnetic clusters and modification in effective magnetic anisotropy including contribution of magnetoelectric coupling, for various values of x. These results were used to generate the magnetic phase diagram.

Surprising resistivity decrease in manganites with constant electronic density

A decrease of eight orders of magnitude in the resistance of (La0.5Ca0.5)zMnO3 has been detected when the electronic density is kept constant while the calcium content is modified by introducing cationic vacancies. This effect is related to the disappearance of the charge ordering state and the emergence of an antiferromagnetic–ferromagnetic transition. Moreover, high values of the colossal magnetoresistance above room temperature are attained.

Ultrasharp magnetization steps in perovskite manganites

We report a detailed study of steplike metamagnetic transitions in polycrystalline Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn0.95Co0.05O3. The steps have a sudden onset below a critical temperature, are extremely sharp (width <2x10(-4) T), and occur at critical fields which are linearly dependent on the absolute value of the cooling field in which the sample is prepared. Similar transitions are also observed at low temperature in non-Co doped manganites, including single crystal samples. These data show that the steps are an intrinsic property, qualitatively different from either previously observed higher temperature metamagnetic transitions in the manganites or metamagnetic transitions observed in other materials.
