Long-range corrected exchange-correlation kernels to describe excitons in second-harmonic generation

We investigate the role of excitons in second-harmonic generation (SHG) through the long-range corrected (LRC) exchange-correlation kernels: empirical LRC, Bootstrap, and jellium-with-a-gap model. We calculate the macroscopic second-order frequency-dependent susceptibility χ⁽²⁾. We also present the frequency-dependent macroscopic dielectric function ϵ_M which is a fundamental quantity in the theoretical derivation of χ⁽²⁾. We assess the role of the long-range kernels in describing excitons in materials with different symmetry types: cubic zincblende, hexagonal wurtzite, and tetragonal symmetry. Our studies indicate that excitons play an important role in χ⁽²⁾ bringing a strong enhancement of the SHG signal. Moreover, we found that the SHG enhancement follows a simple trend determined by the magnitude of the long-range corrected α-parameter. This trend is material dependent.

Computational screening of organic polymer dielectrics for novel accelerator technologies

The use of infrared lasers to power accelerating dielectric structures is a developing area of research. Within this technology, the choice of the dielectric material forming the accelerating structures, such as the photonic band gap (PBG) structures, is dictated by a range of interrelated factors including their dielectric and optical properties, amenability to photo-polymerization, thermochemical stability and other target performance metrics of the particle accelerator. In this direction, electronic structure theory aided computational screening and design of dielectric materials can play a key role in identifying potential candidate materials with the targeted functionalities to guide experimental synthetic efforts. In an attempt to systematically understand the role of chemistry in controlling the electronic structure and dielectric properties of organic polymeric materials, here we employ empirical screening and density functional theory (DFT) computations, as a part of our multi-step hierarchal screening strategy. Our DFT based analysis focused on the bandgap, dielectric permittivity, and frequency-dependent dielectric losses due to lattice absorption as key properties to down-select promising polymer motifs. In addition to the specific application of dielectric laser acceleration, the general methodology presented here is deemed to be valuable in the design of new insulators with an attractive combination of dielectric properties.

Performance of polarisation functionals for linear and nonlinear optical properties of bulk zinc chalcogenides ZnX (X = S, Se, and Te)

We calculated the frequency dependent macroscopic dielectric function and second-harmonic generation of cubic ZnS, ZnSe and ZnTe within time-dependent density-polarisation functional theory.

Density functional theory investigation of the polarizability and second hyperpolarizability of polydiacetylene and polybutatriene chains: Treatment of exact exchange and role of correlation

The static polarizability and second hyperpolarizability of increasingly large polydiacetylene and polybutatriene (PBT) chains have been evaluated using the optimized effective potential for exact exchange (OEP-EXX) method developed by Yang and Wu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 143002 (2002)], where the unknown part of the effective potential is expressed as a linear combination of Gaussian functions. Various conventional atomic orbital basis sets were employed for the exchange potential (X basis) as well as for the Kohn-Sham orbitals [molecular orbital (MO) basis]. Our results were compared to coupled-perturbed Hartree-Fock (CPHF) calculations and to ab initio correlated values obtained at various levels of approximation. It turns out that (a) small conventional basis sets are, in general, unsatisfactory for the X basis; (b) the performance of a given X basis depends on the MO basis and is generally improved when using a larger MO basis; (c) these effects are exaggerated for the second hyperpolarizability compared to the polarizability; (d) except for the second hyperpolarizability of PBT chains, using 6-311++G** for the X basis gives reasonable agreement with the CPHF results for all MO basis sets; (e) our results suggest that in the limit of a complete X basis the OEP-EXX values may approach the CPHF data; and (f) in general, the quality of a given conventional X basis degrades with the length of the oligomer, which correlates with the fact that the number of X basis functions becomes a smaller fraction of the number required to reproduce exactly the finite-basis-set Hartree-Fock energies. Linear and especially nonlinear electric field responses constitute a very stringent test for assessing the quality of functionals and potentials; appropriately tailored basis sets are needed to describe the latter. Finally, this study further highlights the importance of electron correlation effects on linear and nonlinear responses, for which correlated functionals with OEP are required.

Excitonic optical spectrum of semiconductors obtained by time-dependent density-functional theory with the exact-exchange kernel

Applying a novel exact-exchange (EXX) approach within time-dependent density-functional theory, we obtained the optical absorption spectrum of bulk silicon in good agreement with experiments including excitonic features. Analysis of the EXX kernel shows that inclusion of the Coulomb coupling of electron-hole pairs and the correct long-wavelength behavior in the kernel is crucial for the proper description of excitonic effects in semiconductors.
