Structure and enhanced magnetization in Fe/Pt multilayers

Magnetism and Heterogeneous Catalysis: In Depth on the Quantum Spin-Exchange Interactions in Pt3M (M = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Y)(111) Alloys

Bimetallic Pt-based alloys have drawn considerable attention in the last decades as catalysts in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) because they closely fulfill the two major requirements of high performance and good stability under operating conditions. Pt₃Fe, Pt₃Co, and Pt₃Ni stand out as major candidates, given their good activity toward the challenging oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The common feature across catalysts based on 3d-transition metals and their alloys is magnetism. Ferromagnetic spin-electron interactions, quantum spin-exchange interactions (QSEIs), are one of the most important energetic contributions in allowing milder chemisorption of reactants onto magnetic catalysts, in addition to spin-selective electron transport. The understanding of the role played by QSEIs in the properties of magnetic 3d-metal-based alloys is important to design and develop novel and effective electrocatalysts based on abundant and cheap metals. We present a detailed theoretical study (via density functional theory) on the most experimentally explored bimetallic alloys Pt₃M (M = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Y)(111). The investigation starts with a thorough structural study on the composition of the layers, followed by a comprehensive physicochemical description of their resistance toward segregation and their chemisorption capabilities toward hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Our study demonstrates that Pt₃Fe(111), Pt₃Co(111), and Pt₃Ni(111) possess the same preferential multilayered structural organization, known for exhibiting specific magnetic properties. The specific role of QSEIs in their catalytic behavior is justified via comparison between spin-polarized and non-spin-polarized calculations.

In situ x-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction study of L 1(0) ordering in (57)Fe/Pt multilayers

In situ high temperature x-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction measurements in the energy dispersive mode are used to study the ordered face-centered tetragonal (fct) L 1(0) phase formation in [Fe(19 Å)/Pt(25 Å)]( × 10) multilayers prepared by ion beam sputtering. With the in situ x-ray measurements it is observed that (i) the multilayer structure first transforms to a disordered FePt and subsequently to an ordered fct L 1(0) phase, (ii) the ordered fct L 1(0) FePt peaks start to appear at 320 °C annealing, (iii) the activation energy of the interdiffusion is 0.8 eV and (iv) ordered fct FePt grains have preferential out-of-plane texture. The magneto-optical Kerr effect and conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopies are used to study the magnetic properties of the as-deposited and 400 °C annealed multilayers. The magnetic data for the 400 °C annealed sample indicate that the magnetization is at an angle of ∼50° from the plane of the film.

Atomic-layer resolved magnetic and electronic structure analysis of ni thin film on a Cu(001) surface by diffraction spectroscopy

Up until now there has been no direct method for detecting the electronic and magnetic structure of each atomic layer at the surface, which is an essential analysis technique for nanotechnology. For this purpose, we have developed a new method, diffraction spectroscopy, based on the photon energy dependence of the angular distribution of Auger electron emission. We have applied this method to analyze the magnetic structure of a Ni ultrathin film on a Cu(001) surface around the spin reorientation transition. Atomic-layer resolved x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra were obtained. Surface and interior core-level shifts and magnetic moments are determined for each atomic layer individually.
