Measurement of the conductance distribution function at a quantum Hall transition

Multifractal Conductance Fluctuations in High-Mobility Graphene in the Integer Quantum Hall Regime

We present the first experimental evidence for the multifractality of a transport property at a topological phase transition. In particular, we show that conductance fluctuations display multifractality at the integer quantum Hall plateau-to-plateau transitions in high-mobility mesoscopic graphene devices. The multifractality gets rapidly suppressed as the chemical potential moves away from these critical points. Our combination of experimental study and multifractal analysis provides a novel method for probing the criticality of wave functions at phase transitions in mesoscopic systems, and quantum criticality in several condensed-matter systems.

Scaling Collapse of Longitudinal Conductance near the Integer Quantum Hall Transition

Within the mature field of Anderson transitions, the critical properties of the integer quantum Hall transition still pose a significant challenge. Numerical studies of the transition suffer from strong corrections to scaling for most observables. In this Letter, we suggest to overcome this problem by using the longitudinal conductance g of the network model as the scaling observable, which we compute for system sizes nearly 2 orders of magnitude larger than in previous studies. We show numerically that the sizable corrections to scaling of g can be accounted for in a remarkably simple form, which leads to an excellent scaling collapse. Surprisingly, the scaling function turns out to be indistinguishable from a Gaussian. We propose a cost-function-based approach and estimate ν=2.609(7) for the localization length exponent, consistent with previous results, but considerably more precise than in most works on this problem. Extending previous approaches for Hamiltonian models, we also confirm our finding using integrated conductance as a scaling variable.

Turbulence Hierarchy and Multifractality in the Integer Quantum Hall Transition

We offer a new perspective on the problem of characterizing mesoscopic fluctuations in the interplateau regions of the integer quantum Hall transition. We found that longitudinal and transverse conductance fluctuations, generated by varying the external magnetic field within a microscopic model, are multifractal and lead to distributions of conductance increments (magnetoconductance) with heavy tails (intermittency) and signatures of a hierarchical structure (cascade) in the corresponding stochastic process, akin to Kolmogorov's theory of fluid turbulence. We confirm this picture by interpreting the stochastic process of the conductance increments in the framework of H theory, which is a continuous-time stochastic approach that incorporates the basic features of Kolmogorov's theory. The multifractal analysis of the conductance "time series," combined with the H-theory formalism, provides strong support for the overall characterization of mesoscopic fluctuations in the quantum Hall transition as a multifractal stochastic phenomenon with multiscale hierarchy, intermittency, and cascade effects.

Near-perfect correlation of the resistance components of mesoscopic samples at the quantum Hall regime

We study the four-terminal resistance fluctuations of mesoscopic samples near the transition between the nu=2 and the nu=1 quantum Hall states. We observe near-perfect correlations between the fluctuations of the longitudinal and Hall components of the resistance. These correlated fluctuations appear in a magnetic-field range for which the two-terminal resistance of the samples is quantized. We discuss these findings in light of edge-state transport models of the quantum Hall effect. We also show that our results lead to an ambiguity in the determination of the width of quantum Hall transitions.

Universal conductance distributions in the crossover between diffusive and localization regimes

The full distribution of the conductance P(G) in quasi-one-dimensional wires with rough surfaces is analyzed from the diffusive to the localization regime. In the crossover region, where the statistics is dominated by only one or two eigenchannels, the numerically obtained P(G) is found to be independent of the details of the system with the average conductance <G> as the only scaling parameter. For <G><e(2)/h, P(G) is given by an essentially "one-sided" log-normal distribution. In contrast, for e(2)/h< <G> < or =2e(2)/h, the shape of P(G) remarkably agrees with those predicted by random matrix theory for two fluctuating transmission eigenchannels.
