Detectability of Continuous Gravitational Waves from Magnetically Deformed Neutron Stars

Neutron stars are known to contain extremely powerful magnetic fields. Their effect is to deform the shape of the star, leading to the potential emission of continuous gravitational waves. The magnetic deformation of neutron stars, however, depends on the geometry and strength of their internal magnetic field as well as on their composition, described by the equation of state. Unfortunately, both the configuration of the magnetic field and the equation of state of neutron stars are unknown, and assessing the detectability of continuous gravitational waves from neutron stars suffers from these uncertainties. Using our recent results relating the magnetic deformation of a neutron star to its mass and radius—based on models with realistic equations of state currently allowed by observational and nuclear physics constraints—and considering the Galactic pulsar population, we assess the detectability of continuous gravitational waves from pulsars in the galaxy by current and future gravitational waves detectors.

Phase Diagram, Scalar-Pseudoscalar Meson Behavior and Restoration of Symmetries in (2 + 1) Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model

We explore the phase diagram and the modification of mesonic observables in a hot and dense medium using the (2 + 1) Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We present the phase diagram in the ( T , μ B ) -plane, with its isentropic trajectories, paying special attention to the chiral critical end point (CEP). Chiral and deconfinement transitions are examined. The modifications of mesonic observables in the medium are explored as a tool to analyze the effective restoration of chiral symmetry for different regions of the phase diagram. It is shown that the meson masses, namely that of the kaons, change abruptly near the CEP, which can be relevant for its experimental search.

Properties of mesons in a strong magnetic field

By extending the [Formula: see text]-derivable approach in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to a finite magnetic field we calculate the properties of pion, [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] mesons in a magnetic field at finite temperature not only in the quark-antiquark bound state scheme but also in the pion-pion scattering resonant state scenario. Our calculation as a result makes manifest that the masses of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] meson can be nearly degenerate at the pseudo-critical temperature which increases with increasing magnetic field strength, and the [Formula: see text] mass ascends suddenly at almost the same critical temperature. Meanwhile the [Formula: see text] mesons' masses decrease with the temperature but increase with the magnetic field strength. We also check the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation and find that the relation can be violated clearly with increasing temperature, and the effect of the magnetic field becomes pronounced around the critical temperature. With different criteria, we analyze the effect of the magnetic field on the chiral phase transition and find that the pseudo-critical temperature of the chiral phase cross, [Formula: see text], is always enhanced by the magnetic field. Moreover, our calculations indicate that the [Formula: see text] mesons will get melted as the chiral symmetry has not yet been restored, but the [Formula: see text] meson does not disassociate even at very high temperature. Particularly, it is the first to show that there does not exist a vector meson condensate in the QCD vacuum in the pion-pion scattering scheme.
