Large deviations of the ballistic Lévy walk model

Universal to nonuniversal transition of the statistics of rare events during the spread of random walks

Through numerous experiments that analyzed rare event statistics in heterogeneous media, it was discovered that in many cases the probability density function for particle position, P(X,t), exhibits a slower decay rate than the Gaussian function. Typically, the decay behavior is exponential, referred to as Laplace tails. However, many systems exhibit an even slower decay rate, such as power-law, log-normal, or stretched exponential. In this study, we utilize the continuous-time random walk method to investigate the rare events in particle hopping dynamics and find that the properties of the hop size distribution induce a critical transition between the Laplace universality of rare events and a more specific, slower decay of P(X,t). Specifically, when the hop size distribution decays slower than exponential, such as e^{-|x|^{β}} (β>1), the Laplace universality no longer applies, and the decay is specific, influenced by a few large events, rather than by the accumulation of many smaller events that give rise to Laplace tails.

Controls that expedite first-passage times in disordered systems

First-passage time statistics in disordered systems exhibiting scale invariance are studied widely. In particular, long trapping times in energy or entropic traps are fat-tailed distributed, which slow the overall transport process. We study the statistical properties of the first-passage time of biased processes in different models, and we employ the big-jump principle that shows the dominance of the maximum trapping time on the first-passage time. We demonstrate that the removal of this maximum significantly expedites transport. As the disorder increases, the system enters a phase where the removal shows a dramatic effect. Our results show how we may speed up transport in strongly disordered systems exploiting scale invariance. In contrast to the disordered systems studied here, the removal principle has essentially no effect in homogeneous systems; this indicates that improving the conductance of a poorly conducting system is, theoretically, relatively easy as compared to a homogeneous system.

Accumulation of Particles and Formation of a Dissipative Structure in a Nonequilibrium Bath

The standard textbooks contain good explanations of how and why equilibrium thermodynamics emerges in a reservoir with particles that are subjected to Gaussian noise. However, in systems that convert or transport energy, the noise is often not Gaussian. Instead, displacements exhibit an α-stable distribution. Such noise is commonly called Lévy noise. With such noise, we see a thermodynamics that deviates from what traditional equilibrium theory stipulates. In addition, with particles that can propel themselves, so-called active particles, we find that the rules of equilibrium thermodynamics no longer apply. No general nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory is available and understanding is often ad hoc. We study a system with overdamped particles that are subjected to Lévy noise. We pick a system with a geometry that leads to concise formulae to describe the accumulation of particles in a cavity. The nonhomogeneous distribution of particles can be seen as a dissipative structure, i.e., a lower-entropy steady state that allows for throughput of energy and concurrent production of entropy. After the mechanism that maintains nonequilibrium is switched off, the relaxation back to homogeneity represents an increase in entropy and a decrease of free energy. For our setup we can analytically connect the nonequilibrium noise and active particle behavior to entropy decrease and energy buildup with simple and intuitive formulae.

Nonergodicity of d-dimensional generalized Lévy walks and their relation to other space-time coupled models

We investigate the nonergodicity of the generalized Lévy walk introduced by Shlesinger et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 1100 (1987)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.58.1100] with respect to the squared displacements. We present detailed analytical derivations of our previous findings outlined in a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 104501 (2018)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.120.104501], give detailed interpretations, and in particular emphasize three surprising results. First, we find that the mean-squared displacements can diverge for a certain range of parameter values. Second, we show that an ensemble of trajectories can spread subdiffusively, whereas individual time-averaged squared displacements show superdiffusion. Third, we recognize that the fluctuations of the time-averaged squared displacements can become so large that the ergodicity breaking parameter diverges, what we call infinitely strong ergodicity breaking. This phenomenon can also occur for paramter values where the lag-time dependence of the mean-squared displacements is linear indicating normal diffusion. In order to numerically determine the full distribution of time-averaged squared displacements, we use importance sampling. For an embedding of our findings into existing results in the literature, we define a more general model which we call variable speed generalized Lévy walk and which includes well-known models from the literature as special cases such as the space-time coupled Lévy flight or the anomalous Drude model. We discuss and interpret our findings regarding the generalized Lévy walk in detail and compare them with the nonergodicity of the other space-time coupled models following from the more general model.

Superdiffusion in self-reinforcing run-and-tumble model with rests

This paper introduces a run-and-tumble model with self-reinforcing directionality and rests. We derive a single governing hyperbolic partial differential equation for the probability density of random-walk position, from which we obtain the second moment in the long-time limit. We find the criteria for the transition between superdiffusion and diffusion caused by the addition of a rest state. The emergence of superdiffusion depends on both the parameter representing the strength of self-reinforcement and the ratio between mean running and resting times. The mean running time must be at least 2/3 of the mean resting time for superdiffusion to be possible. Monte Carlo simulations validate this theoretical result. This work demonstrates the possibility of extending the telegrapher's (or Cattaneo) equation by adding self-reinforcing directionality so that superdiffusion occurs even when rests are introduced.

Arcsine law and multistable Brownian dynamics in a tilted periodic potential

Multistability is one of the most important phenomena in dynamical systems, e.g., bistability enables the implementation of logic gates and therefore computation. Recently multistability has attracted a greatly renewed interest related to memristors and graphene structures, to name only a few. We investigate tristability in velocity dynamics of a Brownian particle subjected to a tilted periodic potential. It is demonstrated that the origin of this effect is attributed to the arcsine law for the velocity dynamics at the zero temperature limit. We analyze the impact of thermal fluctuations and construct the phase diagram for the stability of the velocity dynamics. It suggests an efficient strategy to control the multistability by changing solely the force acting on the particle or temperature of the system. Our findings for the paradigmatic model of nonequilibrium statistical physics apply to, inter alia, Brownian motors, Josephson junctions, cold atoms dwelling in optical lattices, and colloidal systems.
