Heterogeneous diffusion processes and nonergodicity with Gaussian colored noise in layered diffusivity landscapes

Anomalous diffusion, non-Gaussianity, nonergodicity, and confinement in stochastic-scaled Brownian motion with diffusing diffusivity dynamics

Scaled Brownian motions (SBMs) with power-law time-dependent diffusivity have been used to describe various types of anomalous diffusion yet Gaussian observed in granular gases kinetics, turbulent diffusion, and molecules mobility in cells, to name a few. However, some of these systems may exhibit non-Gaussian behavior which can be described by SBM with diffusing diffusivity (DD-SBM). Here, we numerically investigate both free and confined DD-SBM models characterized by fixed or stochastic scaling exponent of time-dependent diffusivity. The effects of distributed scaling exponent, random diffusivity, and confinement are considered. Different regimes of ultraslow diffusion, subdiffusion, normal diffusion, and superdiffusion are observed. In addition, weak ergodic and non-Gaussian behaviors are also detected. These results provide insights into diffusion in time-fluctuating diffusivity landscapes with potential applications to time-dependent temperature systems spreading in heterogeneous environments.

Statistical physics of inhomogeneous transport: Unification of diffusion laws and inference from first-passage statistics

Characterization of composite materials, whose properties vary in space over microscopic scales, has become a problem of broad interdisciplinary interest. In particular, estimation of the inhomogeneous transport coefficients, e.g., the diffusion coefficient or the heat conductivity, which shape important processes in biology and engineering, is a challenging task. The analysis of such systems is further complicated because two alternative formulations of the inhomogeneous transport equations exist in the literature-the Smoluchowski and Fokker-Planck equations, which are also related to the so-called Ito-Stratonovich dilemma. Using the theory of statistical physics, we show that the two formulations, usually regarded as distinct models, are physically equivalent. From this result we develop efficient estimates for the transverse space-dependent diffusion coefficient in fluids near a phase boundary. Our method requires only measurements of escape probabilities and mean exit times of molecules leaving a narrow spatial region. We test our estimates in three case studies: (i) a Langevin model of a Büttikker-Landauer ratchet; atomistic molecular-dynamics simulations of liquid-water molecules in contact with (ii) vapor, and (iii) soap (surfactant) film which has promising applications in physical chemistry. Our analysis reveals that near the surfactant monolayer the mobility of water molecules is slowed down almost twice with respect to the bulk liquid. Moreover, the diffusion coefficient of water correlates with the transition from hydrophilic to hydrophobic parts of the film.

Brownian particles driven by spatially periodic noise

We discuss the dynamics of a Brownian particle under the influence of a spatially periodic noise strength in one dimension using analytical theory and computer simulations. In the absence of a deterministic force, the Langevin equation can be integrated formally exactly. We determine the short- and long-time behaviour of the mean displacement (MD) and mean-squared displacement (MSD). In particular, we find a very slow dynamics for the mean displacement, scaling as [Formula: see text] with time t. Placed under an additional external periodic force near the critical tilt value we compute the stationary current obtained from the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation and identify an essential singularity if the minimum of the noise strength is zero. Finally, in order to further elucidate the effect of the random periodic driving on the diffusion process, we introduce a phase factor in the spatial noise with respect to the external periodic force and identify the value of the phase shift for which the random force exerts its strongest effect on the long-time drift velocity and diffusion coefficient.

Extreme value statistics and arcsine laws for heterogeneous diffusion processes

Heterogeneous diffusion with a spatially changing diffusion coefficient arises in many experimental systems such as protein dynamics in the cell cytoplasm, mobility of cajal bodies, and confined hard-sphere fluids. Here, we showcase a simple model of heterogeneous diffusion where the diffusion coefficient D(x) varies in a power-law way, i.e., D(x)∼|x|^{-α} with the exponent α>-1. This model is known to exhibit anomalous scaling of the mean-squared displacement (MSD) of the form ∼t^{2/2+α} and weak ergodicity breaking in the sense that ensemble averaged and time averaged MSDs do not converge. In this paper, we look at the extreme value statistics of this model and derive, for all α, the exact probability distributions of the maximum spatial displacement M(t) and arg-maximum t_{m}(t) (i.e., the time at which this maximum is reached) till duration t. In the second part of our paper, we analyze the statistical properties of the residence time t_{r}(t) and the last-passage time t_{ℓ}(t) and compute their distributions exactly for all values of α. Our study unravels that the heterogeneous version (α≠0) displays many rich and contrasting features compared to that of the standard Brownian motion (BM). For example, while for BM (α=0), the distributions of t_{m}(t),t_{r}(t), and t_{ℓ}(t) are all identical (á la "arcsine laws" due to Lévy), they turn out to be significantly different for nonzero α. Another interesting property of t_{r}(t) is the existence of a critical α (which we denote by α_{c}=-0.3182) such that the distribution exhibits a local maximum at t_{r}=t/2 for α<α_{c} whereas it has minima at t_{r}=t/2 for α≥α_{c}. The underlying reasoning for this difference hints at the very contrasting natures of the process for α≥α_{c} and α<α_{c} which we thoroughly examine in our paper. All our analytical results are backed by extensive numerical simulations.

Capturing multifractality of pressure fluctuations in thermoacoustic systems using fractional-order derivatives

The stable operation of a turbulent combustor is not completely silent; instead, there is a background of small amplitude aperiodic acoustic fluctuations known as combustion noise. Pressure fluctuations during this state of combustion noise are multifractal due to the presence of multiple temporal scales that contribute to its dynamics. However, existing models are unable to capture the multifractality in the pressure fluctuations. We conjecture an underlying fractional dynamics for the thermoacoustic system and obtain a fractional-order model for pressure fluctuations. The data from this model has remarkable visual similarity to the experimental data and also has a wide multifractal spectrum during the state of combustion noise. Quantitative similarity with the experimental data in terms of the Hurst exponent and the multifractal spectrum is observed during the state of combustion noise. This model is also able to produce pressure fluctuations that are qualitatively similar to the experimental data acquired during intermittency and thermoacoustic instability. Furthermore, we argue that the fractional dynamics vanish as we approach the state of thermoacoustic instability.
