Persistent homology of fractional Gaussian noise

Epileptic detection in single and multi-lead EEG signals using persistent homology based on bi-directional weighted visibility graphs

Epilepsy is a widespread neurological disorder, and its recurrence and suddenness are making automatic detection of seizure an urgent necessity. For this purpose, this paper performs topological data analysis (TDA) of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals by the medium of graphs to explore the potential brain activity information they contain. Through our innovative method, we first map the time series of epileptic EEGs into bi-directional weighted visibility graphs (BWVGs), which give more comprehensive reflections of the signals compared to previous existing structures. Traditional graph-theoretic measurements are generally partial and mainly consider differences or correlations in vertices or edges, whereas persistent homology (PH), the essential part of TDA, provides an alternative way of thinking by quantifying the topology structure of the graphs and analyzing the evolution of these topological properties with scale changes. Therefore, we analyze the PH for BWVGs and then obtain the two indicators of persistence and birth-death for homology groups to reflect the topology of the mapping graphs of EEG signals and reveal the discrepancies in brain dynamics. Furthermore, we adopt neural networks (NNs) for the automatic detection of epileptic signals and successfully achieve a classification accuracy of 99.67% when distinguishing among three different sets of EEG signals from seizure, seizure-free, and healthy subjects. In addition, to accommodate multi-leads, we propose a classifier that incorporates graph structure to distinguish seizure and seizure-free EEG signals. The classification accuracies of the two subjects used in the classifier are as high as 99.23% and 94.76%, respectively, indicating that our proposed model is useful for the analysis of EEG signals.

Relation between the degree and betweenness centrality distribution in complex networks

The centrality measures, like betweenness b and degree k in complex networks remain fundamental quantities helping to classify them. It is realized from Barthelemy's paper [Eur. Phys. J. B 38, 163 (2004)10.1140/epjb/e2004-00111-4] that the maximal b-k exponent for the scale-free (SF) networks is η_{max}=2, belonging to SF trees, based on which one concludes δ≥γ+1/2, where γ and δ are the scaling exponents for the distribution functions of the degree and the betweenness centralities, respectively. This conjecture was violated for some special models and systems. Here we present a systematic study on this problem for visibility graphs of correlated time series, and show evidence that this conjecture fails in some correlation strengths. We consider the visibility graph of three models: two-dimensional Bak-Tang-Weisenfeld (BTW) sandpile model, one-dimensional (1D) fractional Brownian motion (FBM), and 1D Levy walks, the two latter cases are controlled by the Hurst exponent H and the step index α, respectively. In particular, for the BTW model and FBM with H≲0.5, η is greater than 2, and also δ<γ+1/2 for the BTW model, while the Barthelemy's conjecture remains valid for the Levy process. We assert that the failure of the Barthelemy's conjecture is due to large fluctuations in the scaling b-k relation resulting in the violation of hyperscaling relation η=γ-1/δ-1 and emergent anomalous behavior for the BTW model and FBM. Universal distribution function of generalized degree is found for these models which have the same scaling behavior as the Barabasi-Albert network.

Topology-based fluorescence image analysis for automated cell identification and segmentation

Cell segmentation refers to the body of techniques used to identify cells in images and extract biologically relevant information from them; however, manual segmentation is laborious and subjective. We present Topological Boundary Line Estimation using Recurrence Of Neighbouring Emissions (TOBLERONE), a topological image analysis tool which identifies persistent homological image features as opposed to the geometric analysis commonly employed. We demonstrate that topological data analysis can provide accurate segmentation of arbitrarily-shaped cells, offering a means for automatic and objective data extraction. One cellular feature of particular interest in biology is the plasma membrane, which has been shown to present varying degrees of lipid packing, or membrane order, depending on the function and morphology of the cell type. With the use of environmentally-sensitive dyes, images derived from confocal microscopy can be used to quantify the degree of membrane order. We demonstrate that TOBLERONE is capable of automating this task.

Homology groups of embedded fractional Brownian motion

A well-known class of nonstationary self-similar time series is the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) considered to model ubiquitous stochastic processes in nature. Due to noise and trends superimposed on data and even sample size and irregularity impacts, the well-known computational algorithm to compute the Hurst exponent (H) has encountered superior results. Motivated by this discrepancy, we examine the homology groups of high-dimensional point cloud data (PCD), a subset of the unit D-dimensional cube, constructed from synthetic fBm data as a pipeline to compute the H exponent. We compute topological measures for embedded PCD as a function of the associated Hurst exponent for different embedding dimensions, time delays, and amount of irregularity existing in the dataset in various scales. Our results show that for a regular synthetic fBm, the higher value of the embedding dimension leads to increasing the H dependency of topological measures based on zeroth and first homology groups. To achieve a reliable classification of fBm, we should consider the small value of time delay irrespective of the irregularity presented in the data. More interestingly, the value of the scale for which the PCD to be path connected and the postloopless regime scale are more robust concerning irregularity for distinguishing the fBm signal. Such robustness becomes less for the higher value of the embedding dimension. Finally, the associated Hurst exponents for our topological feature vector for the S&P500 were computed, and the results are consistent with the detrended fluctuation analysis method.

Decoherence Effects in a Three-Level System under Gaussian Process

When subjected to a classical fluctuating field characterized by a Gaussian process, we examine the purity and coherence protection in a three-level quantum system. This symmetry of the three-level system is examined when the local random field is investigated further in the noiseless and noisy regimes. In particular, we consider fractional Gaussian, Gaussian, Ornstein–Uhlenbeck, and power law noisy regimes. We show that the destructive nature of the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck noise toward the symmetry of the qutrit to preserve encoded purity and coherence remains large. Our findings suggest that properly adjusting the noisy parameters to specifically provided values can facilitate optimal extended purity and coherence survival. Non-vanishing terms appear in the final density matrix of the single qutrit system, indicating that it is in a strong coherence regime. Because of all of the Gaussian noises, monotonic decay with no revivals has been observed in the single qutrit system. In terms of coherence and information preservation, we find that the current qutrit system outperforms systems with multiple qubits or qutrits using purity and von Neumann entropy. A comparison of noisy and noiseless situations shows that the fluctuating nature of the local random fields is ultimately lost when influenced using the classical Gaussian noises.
