Generalized Kinetic Equations with Fractional Time-Derivative and Nonlinear Diffusion: H-Theorem and Entropy

We investigate the H-theorem for a class of generalized kinetic equations with fractional time-derivative, hyperbolic term, and nonlinear diffusion. When the H-theorem is satisfied, we demonstrate that different entropic forms may emerge due to the equation's nonlinearity. We obtain the entropy production related to these entropies and show that its form remains invariant. Furthermore, we investigate some behaviors for these equations from both numerical and analytical perspectives, showing a large class of behaviors connected with anomalous diffusion and their effects on entropy.

Statistical dynamics of driven systems of confined interacting particles in the overdamped-motion regime

Systems consisting of confined, interacting particles doing overdamped motion admit an effective description in terms of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations. The behavior of these systems is closely related to the _S power-law entropies and can be interpreted in terms of the _S-based thermostatistics. The connection between overdamped systems and the _S measures provides valuable insights on diverse physical problems, such as the dynamics of interacting vortices in type-II superconductors. The _S-thermostatistical approach to the study of many-body systems described by nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations has been intensively explored in recent years, but most of these efforts were restricted to systems affected by time-independent external potentials. Here, we extend this treatment to systems evolving under time-dependent external forces. We establish a lower bound on the work done by these forces when they drive the system during a transformation. The bound is expressed in terms of a free energy based on the _S entropy and is satisfied even if the driving forces are not derivable from a potential function. It constitutes a generalization, for systems governed by nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations involving general time-dependent external forces, of the H-theorem satisfied by these systems when the external forces arise from a time-independent potential.

Thermal versus entropic Mpemba effect in molecular gases with nonlinear drag

Loosely speaking, the Mpemba effect appears when hotter systems cool sooner or, in a more abstract way, when systems further from equilibrium relax faster. In this paper, we investigate the Mpemba effect in a molecular gas with nonlinear drag, both analytically (by employing the tools of kinetic theory) and numerically (direct simulation Monte Carlo of the kinetic equation and event-driven molecular dynamics). The analysis is carried out via two alternative routes, recently considered in the literature: first, the kinetic or thermal route, in which the Mpemba effect is characterized by the crossing of the evolution curves of the kinetic temperature (average kinetic energy), and, second, the stochastic thermodynamics or entropic route, in which the Mpemba effect is characterized by the crossing of the distance to equilibrium in probability space. In general, a nonmutual correspondence between the thermal and entropic Mpemba effects is found, i.e., there may appear the thermal effect without its entropic counterpart or vice versa. Furthermore, a nontrivial overshoot with respect to equilibrium of the thermal relaxation makes it necessary to revise the usual definition of the thermal Mpemba effect, which is shown to be better described in terms of the relaxation of the local equilibrium distribution. Our theoretical framework, which involves an extended Sonine approximation in which not only the excess kurtosis but also the sixth cumulant is retained, gives an excellent account of the behavior observed in simulations.
