Comparison of integral equation theories of the liquid state

The Ornstein-Zernike equation is a powerful tool in liquid state theory for predicting structural and thermodynamic properties of fluids. Combined with a suitable closure, it has been shown to reproduce, e.g., the static structure factor, pressure, and compressibility of liquids to a great degree of accuracy. However, out of the multitude of closures that exist for the Ornstein-Zernike equation, it is hard to predict a priori which closure will give the most accurate predictions for the system at hand. To alleviate this problem, we compare the predictive power of many closures on a curated set of representative benchmark systems, including those with hard-sphere, inverse power-law, Gaussian core, and Lennard-Jones particles, in three and two dimensions. For example, we find that the well-known and highly used Percus-Yevick closure gives significantly worse predictions than lesser-known closures of equal complexity in all cases studied. We anticipate that the trends observed in our results will aid in making more informed decisions regarding closure choices. To facilitate the adoption of more modern closure theories, we also have packaged, documented, and distributed the code necessary to numerically solve the equations for a given closure and pair interaction potential.

Quantum version of the integral equation theory-based dielectric scheme for strongly coupled electron liquids

A novel dielectric scheme is proposed for strongly coupled electron liquids, which handles quantum mechanical effects beyond the random phase approximation level and treats electronic correlations within the integral equation theory of classical liquids. The self-consistent scheme features a complicated dynamic local field correction functional and its formulation is guided by ab initio path integral Monte Carlo simulations. Remarkably, our scheme is capable of providing unprecedently accurate results for the static structure factor with the exception of the Wigner crystallization vicinity, despite the absence of adjustable or empirical parameters.

One-component plasma of a million particles via angular-averaged Ewald potential: A Monte Carlo study

In this work we derive a correct expression for the one-component plasma (OCP) energy via the angular-averaged Ewald potential (AAEP). Unlike Yakub and Ronchi [J. Low Temp. Phys. 139, 633 (2005)0022-229110.1007/s10909-005-5451-5], who had tried to obtain the same energy expression from a two-component plasma model, we used the original Ewald potential for an OCP. A constant in the AAEP was determined using the cluster expansion in the limit of weak coupling. The potential has a simple form suitable for effective numerical simulations. To demonstrate the advantages of the AAEP, we performed a number of Monte Carlo simulations for an OCP with up to a million particles in a wide range of the coupling parameter. Our computations turned out at least two orders of magnitude more effective than those with a traditional Ewald potential. A unified approach is offered for the determination of the thermodynamic limit in the whole investigated range. Our results are in good agreement with both theoretical data for a weakly coupled OCP and previous numerical simulations. We hope that the AAEP will be useful in path integral Monte Carlo simulations of the uniform electron gas.

Effective electronic forces and potentials from ab initio path integral Monte Carlo simulations

The rigorous description of correlated quantum many-body systems constitutes one of the most challenging tasks in contemporary physics and related disciplines. In this context, a particularly useful tool is the concept of effective pair potentials that take into account the effects of the complex many-body medium consistently. In this work, we present extensive, highly accurate ab initio path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) results for the effective interaction and the effective force between two electrons in the presence of the uniform electron gas. This gives us a direct insight into finite-size effects, thereby, opening up the possibility for novel domain decompositions and methodological advances. In addition, we present unassailable numerical proof for an effective attraction between two electrons under moderate coupling conditions, without the mediation of an underlying ionic structure. Finally, we compare our exact PIMC results to effective potentials from linear-response theory, and we demonstrate their usefulness for the description of the dynamic structure factor. All PIMC results are made freely available online and can be used as a thorough benchmark for new developments and approximations.
