Universal scale laws for colors and patterns in imagery

Distribution of colors and patterns in images is observed through cascades that adjust spatial resolution and dynamics. Cascades of colors reveal the emergent universal property that Fully Colored Images (FCIs) of natural scenes adhere to the debated continuous linear log-scale law (slope -2.00±0.01) (L1). Cascades of discrete 2×2 patterns are derived from pixel square reductions onto the seven unlabeled rotation-free textures (0000, 0001, 0011, 0012, 0101, 0102, 0123). They exhibit an unparalleled universal entropy maximum of 1.74±0.013 at some dynamics regardless of spatial scale (L2). Patterns also adhere to the Integral Fluctuation Theorem (1.00±0.01) (L3), pivotal in studies of chaotic systems. Images with fewer colors exhibit quadratic shift and bias from L1 and L3 but adhere to L2. Randomized Hilbert fractal FCIs better match the laws than basic-to-AI-based simulations. Those results are of interest in Neural Networks, out-of-equilibrium physics, and spectral imagery.

Irreversibility across a Nonreciprocal PT-Symmetry-Breaking Phase Transition

Nonreciprocal interactions are commonplace in continuum-level descriptions of both biological and synthetic active matter, yet studies addressing their implications for time reversibility have so far been limited to microscopic models. Here, we derive a general expression for the average rate of informational entropy production in the most generic mixture of conserved phase fields with nonreciprocal couplings and additive conservative noise. For the particular case of a binary system with Cahn-Hilliard dynamics augmented by nonreciprocal cross-diffusion terms, we observe a nontrivial scaling of the entropy production rate across a parity-time symmetry breaking phase transition. We derive a closed-form analytic expression in the weak-noise regime for the entropy production rate due to the emergence of a macroscopic dynamic phase, showing it can be written in terms of the global polar order parameter, a measure of parity-time symmetry breaking.

Optimal Power Extraction from Active Particles with Hidden States

We identify generic protocols achieving optimal power extraction from a single active particle subject to continuous feedback control under the assumption that its spatial trajectory, but not its instantaneous self-propulsion force, is accessible to direct observation. Our Bayesian approach draws on the Onsager-Machlup path integral formalism and is exemplified in the cases of free run-and-tumble and active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck dynamics in one dimension. Such optimal protocols extract positive work even in models characterized by time-symmetric positional trajectories and thus vanishing informational entropy production rates. We argue that the theoretical bounds derived in this work are those against which the performance of realistic active matter engines should be compared.

Energy Cost for Flocking of Active Spins: The Cusped Dissipation Maximum at the Flocking Transition

We study the energy cost of flocking in the active Ising model (AIM) and show that, besides the energy cost for self-propelled motion, an additional energy dissipation is required to power the alignment of spins. We find that this additional alignment dissipation reaches its maximum at the flocking transition point in the form of a cusp with a discontinuous first derivative with respect to the control parameter. To understand this singular behavior, we analytically solve the two- and three-site AIM models and obtain the exact dependence of the alignment dissipation on the flocking order parameter and control parameter, which explains the cusped dissipation maximum at the flocking transition. Our results reveal a trade-off between the energy cost of the system and its performance measured by the flocking speed and sensitivity to external perturbations. This trade-off relationship provides a new perspective for understanding the dynamics of natural flocks and designing optimal artificial flocking systems.
