Criticality and marginal stability of the shear jamming transition of frictionless soft spheres

Origin of yield stress and mechanical plasticity in model biological tissues

During development and under normal physiological conditions, biological tissues are continuously subjected to substantial mechanical stresses. In response to large deformations, cells in a tissue must undergo multicellular rearrangements to maintain integrity and robustness. However, how these events are connected in time and space remains unknown. Here, using theoretical modeling, we study the mechanical plasticity of cell monolayers under large deformations. Our results suggest that the jamming-unjamming (solid-fluid) transition can vary significantly depending on the degree of deformation, implying that tissues are highly unconventional materials. We elucidate the origins of this behavior. We also demonstrate how large deformations are accommodated through a series of cellular rearrangements, similar to avalanches in non-living materials. We find that these 'tissue avalanches' are governed by stress redistribution and the spatial distribution of "soft" or vulnerable spots, which are more prone to undergo rearrangements. Finally, we propose a simple and experimentally accessible framework to infer tissue-level stress and predict avalanches based on static images.

Unified Understanding of Nonlinear Rheology near the Jamming Transition Point

When slowly sheared, jammed packings respond elastically before yielding. This linear elastic regime becomes progressively narrower as the jamming transition point is approached, and rich nonlinear rheologies such as shear softening and hardening or melting emerge. However, the physical mechanism of these nonlinear rheologies remains elusive. To clarify this, we numerically study jammed packings of athermal frictionless soft particles under quasistatic shear γ. We find the universal scaling behavior for the ratio of the shear stress σ and the pressure P, independent of the preparation protocol of the initial configurations. In particular, we reveal shear softening σ/P∼γ^{1/2} over an unprecedentedly wide range of strain up to the yielding point, which a simple scaling argument can rationalize.

Discontinuous rigidity transition associated with shear jamming in granular simulations

We investigate the rigidity transition associated with shear jamming in frictionless, as well as frictional, disk packings in the quasi-static regime and at low shear rates. For frictionless disks, the transition under quasi-static shear is discontinuous, with an instantaneous emergence of a system spanning rigid clusters at the jamming transition. For frictional systems, the transition appears continuous for finite shear rates, but becomes sharper for lower shear rates. In the quasi-static limit, it is discontinuous as in the frictionless case. Thus, our results show that the rigidity transition associated with shear jamming is discontinuous, as demonstrated in the past for isotropic jamming of frictionless particles, and therefore a unifying feature of the jamming transition in general.

Experimental observations of marginal criticality in granular materials

SignificanceAmorphous materials, such as grains, foams, colloids, and glasses, are ubiquitous in nature and our daily life. They can undergo glass transitions or jamming transitions to obtain rigidity either by fast quench or compression, but show subtle changes in the structures compared to the liquid states or liquid-like states. Recent progress on the first-principle replica theory unifies the glass transition and the jamming transition and points out the marginal phase with fractal free-energy landscape within the stable glass phase. Independently, marginal stability analysis predicts the relations between the exponents of the marginal phase. Here, we perform experiments with photoelastic disks and provide direct evidence of these theories in real-world amorphous materials.
