Mean-field theory of sandpile avalanches: From the intermittent- to the continuous-flow regime

Dissipation of Energy by Dry Granular Matter in a Rotating Cylinder

We study experimentally the dissipation of energy in a rotating cylinder which is partially filled by granular material. We consider the range of angular velocity corresponding to continous and stationary flow of the granulate. In this regime, the stationary state depends on the angular velocity and on the filling mass. For a wide interval of filling levels we find a universal behavior of the driving torque required to sustain the stationary state as a function of the angular velocity. The result may be of relevance to industrial applications, e.g. to understand the power consumption of ball mills or rotary kilns and also for damping applications where mechanical energy has to be dissipated in a controlled way.

Memristive Sisyphus circuit for clock signal generation

Frequency generators are widely used in electronics. Here, we report the design and experimental realization of a memristive frequency generator employing a unique combination of only digital logic gates, a single-supply voltage and a realistic thresholdtype memristive device. In our circuit, the oscillator frequency and duty cycle are defined by the switching characteristics of the memristive device and external resistors. We demonstrate the circuit operation both experimentally, using a memristor emulator, and theoretically, using a model memristive device with threshold. Importantly, nanoscale realizations of memristive devices offer small-size alternatives to conventional quartz-based oscillators. In addition, the suggested approach can be used for mimicking some cyclic (Sisyphus) processes in nature, such as "dripping ants" or drops from leaky faucets.

Numerical analysis of granular flows in a silo bed on flow regime characterization

The flow characteristics of a gravity-driven dense granular flow in a granular bed with a contracted drainage orifice are studied by using discrete element method and quantitative analysis. Three values of discharging rates, ranging from fast to slow dense flows, are investigated. Time variations and derivatives of mean forces and velocities, as well as their respective correlations, are analyzed to quantitatively depict the characteristics of granular flow as well as flow regime categorization. The auto-correlation functions, as well as their Fourier spectrums, are utilized to characterize the differences between the mechanisms of slow and fast granular flows. Finally, it is suggested that the flow regimes of slow and fast flows can be characterized by the kinetic and kinematic flow properties of particles.

Development of correlations in the dynamics of wet granular avalanches

A detailed characterization of avalanche dynamics of wet granular media in a rotating drum apparatus is presented. The results confirm the existence of the three wetness regimes observed previously: the granular, the correlated, and the viscoplastic regime. These regimes show qualitatively different dynamic behaviors that are reflected in all the investigated quantities. We discuss the effect of interstitial liquid on the characteristic angles of the material and on the avalanche size distribution. These data also reveal logarithmic aging and allow us to map out the phase diagram of the dynamic behavior as a function of liquid content and flow rate. Via quantitative measurements of the flow velocity and the granular flux during avalanches, we characterize avalanche types unique to wet media. We also explore the details of viscoplastic flow (observed at the highest liquid contents) in which there are lasting contacts during flow, leading to coherence across the entire sample. This coherence leads to a velocity independent flow depth at high rotation rates and robust pattern formation in the granular surface.

Hysteretic transition between avalanches and continuous flow in rotated granular systems

Experiments in drums or cylinders partly filled with a granular system and rotated constantly about their horizontally aligned axis of symmetry show a hysteretic transition from discrete avalanches to continuous flow if the rotation rate is adiabatically changed. Herein, we show that this hysteresis can be explained by the impact of global Langevin-type fluctuations in a recently proposed minimal model for surface flow along granular piles. For too large magnitudes of the fluctuations corresponding to almost elastic grains, the hysteresis vanishes. This might explain why molecular dynamical simulations were not yet able to detect the hysteretic transition. (c) 1999 American Institute of Physics.
