Phonon thermophoresis of crystalline nanoparticles in liquids

Our nonequilibrium thermodynamic model of thermodiffusion in molecular liquid systems is used to examine the role of thermal phonons in the thermophoresis of liquid suspensions of crystalline nanoparticles, which tend to have high thermal conductivity. The Soret coefficient used to characterize stationary thermodiffusion is related to differences in entropy between a particle and the body of liquid that it displaces. Calculated phonon Soret coefficients for graphite and diamond nanoparticles in three polar solvents are used to establish parameters where the phonon mechanism is expected to dominate particle thermophoresis compared to slip-flow caused by forces induced in the surface layer by the temperature gradient. Because the active mode of thermal conductivity in crystals varies with particle size, phonon thermophoresis is expected to dominate within a specific range of particle size, which varies with the properties of the particle and suspending liquid. For graphite and diamond particles in polar solvents the model estimates a size range of around 10-100 nm. Finally, thermophoretic particle accumulation is ultimately limited by the increasing concentration of particles having high thermal conductivity because the zone of particle concentration decreases the local temperature gradient that drives thermophoresis. The respective nonperturbing concentration is evaluated as the function of the size of a given material.

Advantages of using non-isothermal bioreactors for the enzymatic synthesis of antibiotics: the penicillin G acylase as enzyme model

A new hydrophobic and catalytic membrane was prepared by immobilizing Penicillin G acylase (PGA, EC.3.5.1.11) from E. coli on a nylon membrane, chemically grafted with butylmethacrylate (BMA). Hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) and glutaraldehyde (Glu) were used as a spacer and coupling agent, respectively. PGA was used for the enzymatic synthesis of cephalexin, using D(-)-phenylglycine methyl ester (PGME) and 7-amino-3-deacetoxycephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA) as substrates. Several factors affecting this reaction, such as pH, temperature, and concentrations of substrates were investigated. The results indicated good enzyme-binding efficiency of the pre-treated membrane, and an increased stability of the immobilized PGA towards pH and temperature. Calculation of the activation energies showed that cephalexin production by the immobilized biocatalyst was limited by diffusion, resulting in a decrease of enzyme activity and substrate affinity. Temperature gradients were employed as a way to reduce the effects of diffusion limitation. Cephalexin was found to linearly increase with the applied temperature gradient. A temperature difference of about 3 degrees C across the catalytic membrane resulted into a cephalexin synthesis increase of 100% with a 50% reduction of the production times. The advantage of using non-isothermal bioreactors in biotechnological processes, including pharmaceutical applications, is also discussed.

A naive accelerometer acting in the continuum range

The space experiment TRAMP (Thermal Radiation Aspects of Migrating Particles) flown in 1999 onboard the mission Foton 12 sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA), was conceived to reveal and measure a new kind of forces, named Thermal Radiation Forces (TRF). The experiment was dramatically disturbed by the occurrence of undesired convective motions due to the rotation of the spacecraft. Apart from that, corrosion occurred in some parts of the flight apparatus, resulting in the presence of gas bubbles inside the experimental liquid, completely compromising the results. Consequently, the experiment did not allow to reveal and/or to measure TRF, but it turned out to be useful in another way, as a very sensitive accelerometer, since the accelerations deduced from velocity measurements concurred with those measured by the Quasi-Steady Acceleration Measurement (QSAM) system.
