Intra- and Interpolyelectrolyte Complexes of Polyampholytes

At present, a large amount of research from experimental and theoretical points of view has been done on interpolyelectrolyte complexes formed by electrostatic attractive forces and/or interpolymer complexes stabilized by hydrogen bonds. By contrast, relatively less attention has been given to polymer⁻polymer complex formation with synthetic polyampholytes (PA). In this review the complexation of polyampholytes with polyelectrolytes (PE) is considered from theoretical and application points of view. Formation of intra- and interpolyelectrolyte complexes of random, regular, block, dendritic polyampholytes are outlined. A separate subsection is devoted to amphoteric behavior of interpolyelectrolyte complexes. The realization of the so-called "isoelectric effect" for interpolyelectrolyte complexes of water-soluble polyampholytes, amphoteric hydrogels and cryogels with respect to surfactants, dye molecules, polyelectrolytes and proteins is demonstrated.

Generation of mechanical force by grafted polyelectrolytes in an electric field

We study theoretically and by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations the generation of mechanical force by grafted polyelectrolytes in an external electric field, which favors its adsorption on the grafting plane. The force arises in deformable bodies linked to the free end of the chain. Varying the field, one controls the length of the nonadsorbed part of the chain and hence the deformation of the target body, i.e., the arising force too. We consider target bodies with a linear force-deformation relation and with a Hertzian one. While the first relation models a coiled Gaussian chain, the second one describes the force response of a squeezed colloidal particle. The theoretical dependences of generated force and compression of the target body on an applied field agree very well with the results of MD simulations. The analyzed phenomenon may play an important role in future nanomachinery, e.g., it may be used to design nanovices to fix nanosized objects.

Rheological behavior of hydrophobically modified polysulfobetaine methacrylate aqueous solution

Polysulfobetaine methacrylate (PSBMA) that was hydrophobically modified with methacrylic acid 2,3-epoxypropyl ester (GMA) was synthesized via micellar copolymerization method. Viscosity of the hydrophobically modified PSBMA solution was sensitive to added salt concentration.

Reconciling Low- and High-Salt Solution Behavior of Sulfobetaine Polyzwitterions

We investigate the water-solubility upon salt additions, of homogeneous families of sulfobetaine-based polyzwitterions. These polymers bear both positive ammonium, and negative sulfonate charges on each monomer and as a result present an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in the 0-100 degrees C temperature range. Two chemistries are investigated, with either a carboxylate-carrying function (SPE) or an amido-carrying one (SPP). In agreement with the literature published on pSPEs, we find that an addition of simple salts improves the water-solubility of pSPEs, as well as that of pSPPs, yet only once a threshold concentration of added salt has been reached in the solution. We verify using scaling arguments that the onset of solubility promotion, corresponds exactly to the complete screening of the attraction between positive and negative charges inside a polyzwitterionic coil. On the contrary, for salt concentrations smaller than the threshold concentration, we observe that an addition of salt can be adverse to the solubility of polyzwitterions, depending on the degree of polymerization, the type of salt, and the type of zwitterionic motive. Thanks to zeta-potential measurements and systematic variations of these three parameters, we demonstrate, in agreement with theoretical prediction, that this molecular weight-dependent enhanced solubility at small salt concentrations is due to charge asymmetry resulting from partial hydrolysis, combined with specific interactions between salts and zwitterion constituents, evidencing the complexity of the solution behavior of these macromolecules. We thereby reconcile the different behaviors in the domains of low- and high-salinity.

Phase behavior of polyampholytes from charged hard-sphere chain model

A molecular thermodynamic theory is developed for polyampholytes from the coarse-grained charged hard-sphere chain model. The phase behavior of polyampholytes with variations in sequence and chain length is satisfactorily predicted by the theory, consistent with simulation results and experimental observations. At a fixed chain length, the phase envelope expands as the sequence of charge distribution becomes less random. With increasing chain length, the phase envelope expands for diblock and random polyampholytes, but shrinks for zwitterionic polyampholytes. The predicted critical temperature, density, and pressure exhibit scaling relations with chain length for all the three (diblock, random, and zwitterionic) polyampholytes.

Modulation of repulsive forces between neurofilaments by sidearm phosphorylation

Recent studies have advanced the notion that the axonal organization of neurofilaments (NFs) is based on mutual steric repulsion between the unstructured "sidearm" domains of adjacent NFs. Here, we present experimental evidence that these repulsive forces are modulated by the degree of sidearm phosphorylation. When NFs are sedimented into a gelatinous pellet, pellet volume falls with increasing ionic strength and enzymatic dephosphorylation; sedimentation of phosphorylated NFs in the presence of divalent cations also dramatically reduces pellet volume. Further, atomic force microscopy imaging of isolated mammalian NFs reveals robust exclusion of colloidal particles from the NF backbone that is reduced at high ionic strength and attenuated when the filaments are enzymatically dephosphorylated. Phosphate-phosphate repulsion on the NF sidearm appears to modulate NF excluded volume in a graded fashion, thereby controlling axonal NF organization through interfilament forces.

Properties of amphoteric polyurethane waterborne dispersions. II. Macromolecular self-assembly behavior

Amphoteric polyurethane (APU) samples used in this paper were composed of hydrophobic soft segments and pendent -COOH and -CH(2)N(CH(3))(2) groups on the hard segments, which present the properties of both amphoteric polyelectrolytes and amphiphilic block copolymers. APU macromolecules can self-assemble into micelles in acidic and basic aqueous media by hydrophobic/hydrophilic interaction. The self-assembly behavior of APU in acidic and basic media was studied by transmission electron microscopy and light scattering methods. The spherical and hollow micelles of APU were observed respectively in acidic and basic aqueous media. The results indicate that the size and size distribution of APU self-assembly micelles largely depend on the ratio of -COOH to -CH(2)N(CH(3))(2) groups, density of ionizable groups, concentration of APU, and types of acid and base in the media.

Predicting properties of intrinsically unstructured proteins

There is increasing evidence that intrinsically unstructured proteins or protein domains have important biological functions. These types of proteins may be productively analyzed using polymer theory developed to predict global physical properties of polymers. In these theories molecular detail is "coarse grained" out of the models, and replaced with a small number of parameters that characterize the polymer. This reduction in complexity allows extremely large systems to be studied. In the case of simulations, the time scales accessible also increase significantly. Here we discuss the application of polymer theory to unstructured proteins, and consider how to classify proteins within a polymer framework. We then review polymer theory that is relevant to predicting functionally important properties, such as radius of gyration, height of a polymer brush and force required to compress a polymer brush.
