Abstract
The nonlinear dynamics of a one-dimensional molecular crystal in the form of a chain of planar coronene molecules is analyzed. Using molecular dynamics, it is shown that a chain of coronene molecules supports acoustic solitons, rotobreathers, and discrete breathers. An increase in the size of planar molecules in a chain leads to an increase in the number of internal degrees of freedom. This results in an increase in the rate of emission of phonons from spatially localized nonlinear excitations and a decrease in their lifetime. Presented results contribute to the understanding of the effect of the rotational and internal vibrational modes of molecules on the nonlinear dynamics of molecular crystals.

Abstract
Rotobreathers in the chain of coupled linearly elastic rotators are analyzed. Each rotator is a particle connected by a massless elastic rod with a frictionless pivot; it has two degrees of freedom, length and angle of rotation. The rods of the rotators and the elastic bonds between the nearest rotators are linearly elastic, and the nonlinearity of the system is of a purely geometric nature. It is shown that long-lived rotobreathers can exist if the stiffness of the rods is high enough to create a relatively wide gap in the phonon spectrum of the chain. The frequency of angular rotation of the rotobreather cannot be above the optical band of the phonon spectrum and is in the spectrum gap. Generally speaking, the rotation of the rotobreather is accompanied by radial oscillations; however, one can choose such initial conditions so that the radial oscillations are minimal. Some parameters of rotobreathers with minimal radial vibrations are presented on the basis of numerical simulations. The results obtained qualitatively describe the behavior of physical systems with coupled rotators.

Abstract
A novel class of nonequilibrium phase transitions at zero temperature is found in chains of nonlinear oscillators. For two paradigmatic systems, the Hamiltonian XY model and the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we find that the application of boundary forces induces two synchronized phases, separated by a nontrivial interfacial region where the kinetic temperature is finite. Dynamics in such a supercritical state displays anomalous chaotic properties whereby some observables are nonextensive and transport is superdiffusive. At finite temperatures, the transition is smoothed, but the temperature profile is still nonmonotonic.

Abstract
We propose a scheme to induce intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) at an arbitrary site in microelectromechanical cantilever arrays. The idea is to locate the particular cantilever beam in the array that one wishes to drive to an oscillating state with significantly higher amplitude than the average and then apply small adjustments to the electrical signal that drives the whole array system. Our scheme is thus a global closed-loop control strategy. We argue that the dynamical mechanism on which our global driving scheme relies is spatiotemporal chaos and we develop a detailed analysis based on the standard averaging method in nonlinear dynamics to understand the working of our control scheme. We also develop a Markov model to characterize the transient time required for inducing ILMs.

Abstract
Both bright and dark traveling, locked, intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) have been generated with a spatially uniform driver at a frequency in the acoustic spectrum of a nonlinear micromechanical cantilever array. Complementary numerical simulations show that a minimum density of modes, hence array size, is required for the formation of such locked smoothly running excitations. Additional simulations on a small 1D antiferromagnetic spin system are used to illustrate that such uniformly driven running ILMs should be a generic feature of a nanoscale atomic lattice.

Abstract
The properties of discrete breathers in dissipative one-dimensional lattices of nonlinear oscillators subject to periodic driving forces are reviewed. We focus on oscillobreathers in the Frenkel-Kontorova chain and rotobreathers in a ladder of Josephson junctions. Both types of exponentially localized solutions are easily obtained numerically using adiabatic continuation from the anticontinuous limit. Linear stability (Floquet) analysis allows the characterization of different types of bifurcations experienced by periodic discrete breathers. Some of these bifurcations produce nonperiodic localized solutions, namely, quasiperiodic and chaotic discrete breathers, which are generally impossible as exact solutions in Hamiltonian systems. Within a certain range of parameters, propagating breathers occur as attractors of the dissipative dynamics. General features of these excitations are discussed and the Peierls-Nabarro barrier is addressed. Numerical scattering experiments with mobile breathers reveal the existence of two-breather bound states and allow a first glimpse at the intricate phenomenology of these special multibreather configurations.

Abstract
We give a theoretical study of unusual resistive (dynamic) localized states in anisotropic Josephson junction ladders, driven by a dc current at one edge. These states comprise nonlinearly coupled rotating Josephson phases in adjacent cells, and with increasing current they are found to expand into neighboring cells by a sequence of sudden jumps. We argue that the jumps arise from instabilities in the ladder's superconducting part, and our analytic expressions for the peculiar voltage (rotational frequency) ratios and I-V curves are in very good agreement with direct numerical simulations.

Abstract
We analyze carefully the essential features of the dynamics of a stationary discrete breather in the ultimate degree of energy localization in a nonlinear Klein-Gordon lattice with an on-site double-well potential. We demonstrate the existence of three different regimes of oscillatory motion in the breather dynamics, which are closely related to the motion of the central particle in an effective potential having two nondegenerate wells. In given parameter regions, we observe an untrapped regime, in which the central particle executes large-amplitude oscillations from one to the other side of the potential barrier. In other parameter regions, we find the trapped regime, in which the central particle oscillates in one of the two wells of the effective potential. Between these two regimes we find a critical regime in which the central particle undergoes several temporary trappings within an untrapped regime. Importantly, our study reveals that in the presence of purely anharmonic coupling forces, the breather compactifies, i.e., the energy becomes abruptly localized within the breather.
