Front propagation and pattern formation in anisotropic bistable media

Achilles' heel of a traveling pulse subject to a local external stimulus

The response of a traveling pulse to a local external stimulus is considered numerically for a modified three-component Oregonator, which is a model system for the photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. The traveling pulse is traced and constantly stimulated, with the distance between the pulse and the stimulus being kept constant. We are interested in the minimal strength of the spatially localized stimulus in order to eliminate the pulse. The use of a stimulus of small width allows us to detect the point in the pulse most sensitive to the external stimulus, referred to as the "Achilles' heel" of the traveling pulse, at which minimal strength of stimulus causes a collapse of the pulse. Our findings are demonstrated experimentally as well with the photosensitive BZ reaction.

Pattern formation controlled by time-delayed feedback in bistable media

Effects of time-delayed feedback on pattern formation are studied both numerically and theoretically in a bistable reaction-diffusion model. The time-delayed feedback applied to the activator and/or the inhibitor alters the behavior of the nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch (NIB) bifurcation. If the intensities of the feedbacks applied to the two species are identical, only the velocities of Bloch fronts are changed. If the intensities are different, both the critical point of the NIB bifurcation and the threshold of stability of front to transverse perturbations are changed. The effect of time-delayed feedback on the activator opposes the effect of time-delayed feedback on the inhibitor. When the time-delayed feedback is applied individually to one of the species, positive and negative feedbacks make the bifurcation point shift to different directions. The time-delayed feedback provides a flexible way to control the NIB bifurcation and the pattern formation.

Complex-anisotropy-induced pattern formation in bistable media

A construct of anisotropy in bistable media is adopted to characterize the effects of anisotropy on pattern formation by means of anisotropic line tension. A velocity curvature relation is further derived to account for the anisotropic wave propagations. Stability analysis of transverse perturbations indicates that a sufficiently strong complex anisotropy can induce dynamical instabilities and even lead to a breakup of the wave patterns. Numerical simulations show that complex anisotropy can induce rich spatiotemporal behaviors in bistable media. The results of analysis and simulations demonstrate that this method successfully incorporates complex anisotropy into the reaction diffusion model and has general significance.

Effects of hypercapnia and hypocapnia on ventilatory variability and the chaotic dynamics of ventilatory flow in humans

In humans, lung ventilation exhibits breath-to-breath variability and dynamics that are nonlinear, complex, sensitive to initial conditions, unpredictable in the long-term, and chaotic. Hypercapnia, as produced by the inhalation of a CO2-enriched gas mixture, stimulates ventilation. Hypocapnia, as produced by mechanical hyperventilation, depresses ventilation in animals and in humans during sleep, but it does not induce apnea in awake humans. This emphasizes the suprapontine influences on ventilatory control. How cortical and subcortical commands interfere thus depend on the prevailing CO2 levels. However, CO2 also influences the variability and complexity of ventilation. This study was designed to describe how this occurs and to test the hypothesis that CO2 chemoreceptors are important determinants of ventilatory dynamics. Spontaneous ventilatory flow was recorded in eight healthy subjects. Breath-by-breath variability was studied through the coefficient of variation of several ventilatory variables. Chaos was assessed with the noise titration method (noise limit) and characterized with numerical indexes [largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE), sensitivity to initial conditions; Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy (KSE), unpredictability; and correlation dimension (CD), irregularity]. In all subjects, under all conditions, a positive noise limit confirmed chaos. Hypercapnia reduced breathing variability, increased LLE ( P = 0.0338 vs. normocapnia; P = 0.0018 vs. hypocapnia), increased KSE, and slightly reduced CD. Hypocapnia increased variability, decreased LLE and KSE, and reduced CD. These results suggest that chemoreceptors exert a strong influence on ventilatory variability and complexity. However, complexity persists in the quasi-absence of automatic drive. Ventilatory variability and complexity could be determined by the interaction between the respiratory central pattern generator and suprapontine structures.

Chaotic dynamics of resting ventilatory flow in humans assessed through noise titration

The mammalian ventilatory behaviour exhibits nonlinear dynamics as reflected by certain nonlinearity or complexity indicators (e.g. correlation dimension, approximate entropy, Lyapunov exponents, etc.) but this is not sufficient to determine its possible chaotic nature. To address this, we applied the noise titration technique, previously shown to discern and quantify chaos in short and noisy time series, to ventilatory flow recordings obtained in quietly breathing normal humans. Nine subjects (8 men and 1 woman, 24-42 years) were studied during 15-min epochs of ventilatory steady-state (10.1+/-3.0 breaths/min, tidal volume 0.63+/-0.2 L). Noise titration applied to the unfiltered signals subsampled at 5 Hz detected nonlinearity in all cases (noise limit 20.2+/-12.5%). Noise limit values were weakly correlated to the correlation dimension and the largest Lyapunov exponent of the signals. This study shows that the noise titration approach evidences a chaotic dimension to the behavior of ventilatory flow over time in normal humans during tidal breathing.

Vortex-pair dynamics in anisotropic bistable media: a kinematic approach

In isotropic bistable media, a vortex pair typically evolves into rotating spiral waves. In an anisotropic system, instead of spiral waves, the vortices can form wave fragments that propagate with a constant speed in a given direction determined by the system's anisotropy. The fragments may propagate invariably, shrink, or expand. We develop a kinematic approach for the study of vortex-pair dynamics in anisotropic bistable media and use it to capture the wave fragment dynamics.

Pattern formation on anisotropic and heterogeneous catalytic surfaces

We review experimental and theoretical work addressing pattern formation on anisotropic and heterogeneous catalytic surfaces. These systems are typically modeled by reaction-diffusion equations reflecting the kinetics and transport of the involved chemical species. Here, we demonstrate the influence of anisotropy and heterogeneity in a simplified model, the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations. Anisotropy causes stratification of labyrinthine patterns and spiral defect chaos in bistable media. For heterogeneous media, we study the situation where the heterogeneity appears on a length scale shorter than the typical pattern length scale. Homogenization, i.e., computation of effective medium properties, is applied to an example and illustrated with simulations in one (fronts) and two dimensions (spirals). We conclude with a discussion of open questions and promising directions that comprise the coupling of the microscopic structure of the surface to the macroscopic concentration patterns and the fabrication of nanostructures with heterogeneous surfaces as templates. Front initiation on microdesigned composite catalysts

We first briefly review the subject of spatiotemporal pattern formation on microdesigned composite catalysts. One of the most significant interaction mechanisms between different reacting domains (consisting of different metal catalysts such as Pt and Rh, coupled through surface diffusion) is the initiation of reaction fronts at the interface between them.
