Three-dimensional pattern formation, multiple homogeneous soft modes, and nonlinear dielectric electroconvection

Pattern formation in the damped Nikolaevskiy equation

The Nikolaevskiy equation has been proposed as a model for seismic waves, electroconvection, and weak turbulence; we show that it can also be used to model transverse instabilities of fronts. This equation possesses a large-scale "Goldstone" mode that significantly influences the stability of spatially periodic steady solutions; indeed, all such solutions are unstable at onset, and the equation exhibits spatiotemporal chaos. In many applications, a weak damping of this neutral mode will be present, and we study the influence of this damping on solutions to the Nikolaevskiy equation. We examine the transition to the usual Eckhaus instability as the damping of the large-scale mode is increased, through numerical calculation and weakly nonlinear analysis. The latter is accomplished using asymptotically consistent systems of coupled amplitude equations. We find that there is a critical value of the damping below which (for a given value of the supercriticality parameter) all periodic steady states are unstable. The last solutions to lose stability lie in a cusp close to the left-hand side of the marginal stability curve.

Three-dimensional imaging of dielectric patterns in electrohydrodynamic convection of a nematic liquid crystal

The transition from surface to bulk normal dielectric rolls in a nematic liquid crystal is imaged by fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy. The three-dimensional director structure and the liquid flow are scanned in both the layer plane and the transverse plane. Two systems of small-scale convective flow are formed, one at each electrode. Strong anchoring makes director oscillations difficult and charges accumulate by the Carr-Helfrich mechanism. The middle region is a structureless convection where the director oscillates with the frequency of the applied voltage. The small-scale flow eventually fills the cell from one electrode to the other as one system of thin and elongated rolls. The true dielectric mode is not a director pattern, rather a surface flow instability.

Observation of stable phase jump lines in convection of a twisted nematic liquid crystal

We report observations of stable, localized, linelike structures in the spatially periodic pattern formed by nematic electroconvection, along which the phase of the pattern jumps by pi. With increasing electric voltage, these lines form a gridlike structure that goes over into a structure indistinguishable from the well-known grid pattern. We present theoretical arguments that suggest that the twisted cell geometry we are using is indirectly stabilizing the phase jump lines, and that the phase jump lines lattice is caused by an interaction of phase jump lines and a zig-zag instability of the surrounding pattern.

Pattern formation in diffusive-advective coupled map lattices

We investigate pattern formation and evolution in coupled map lattices when advection is incorporated, in addition to the usual diffusive term. All patterns may be suitably grouped into five classes: three periodic, supporting static patterns and traveling waves, and two nonperiodic. Relative frequencies are determined as a function of all model parameters: diffusion, advection, local nonlinearity, and lattice size. Advection plays an important role in coupled map lattices, being capable of considerably altering pattern evolution. For instance, advection may induce synchronization, making chaotic patterns evolve periodically. As a byproduct we describe a practical algorithm for classifying generic pattern evolutions and for measuring velocities of traveling waves.

Modulated structures in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals

Motivated by experiments in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals with homeotropic alignment we study the coupled amplitude equations describing the formation of a stationary roll pattern in the presence of a weakly damped mode that breaks isotropy. The equations can be generalized to describe the planarly aligned case if the orienting effect of the boundaries is small, which can be achieved by a destabilizing magnetic field. The slow mode represents the in-plane director at the center of the cell. The simplest uniform states are normal rolls, which may undergo a pitchfork bifurcation to abnormal rolls with a misaligned in-plane director. We present a new class of defect-free solutions with spatial modulations perpendicular to the rolls. In a parameter range where the zigzag instability is not relevant these solutions are stable attractors, as observed in experiments. We also present two-dimensionally modulated states with and without defects which result from the destabilization of the one-dimensionally modulated structures. Finally, for no (or very small) damping, and away from the rotationally symmetric case, we find static chevrons made up of a periodic arrangement of defect chains (or bands of defects) separating homogeneous regions of oblique rolls with very small amplitude. These states may provide a model for a class of poorly understood stationary structures observed in various highly conducting materials ("prechevrons" or "broad domains").
